Chapter 521 The First Day of Teaching
The number of people who came because of its reputation far exceeded expectations.
Before the lecture even began, the house was packed with people inside and out.
Many people had never seen a famous person before and came to watch; but there were also many who genuinely wanted to hear from the scholars.
Chen Yongnian knew that Old Xu was famous, but he did not expect to attract so many people, and he almost lost control.
Fortunately, Fang Ziming was worried about Xu Lao's safety, so he sent more people from the county government to maintain order at the scene, which brought the situation under control.
Even so, there was almost no place to stand in the courtyard.
When Wan Qiqi arrived, she saw that the house was full of people, and she hesitated for a moment.
However, one of the constables recognized her and used his position to bring Wan Qiqi inside, finding her a spot where she could see the platform.
"Sister-in-law, there are too many people here. If you want to see it, you'll have to stand!" The constable said respectfully.
Wan Qiqi glanced at him; he was a boy who looked only seventeen or eighteen years old.
"It's alright, I'll just stand and listen for a while. What's your name?" she asked.
"Just call me Xiao Fan!" Xiao Fan grinned and replied, then added, "Don't worry, Brother Yongnian gave me this opportunity to work in the county government, and I will definitely do my best!"
Wan Qiqi was somewhat surprised by this, yet also found it not surprising at the same time.
After saying a few words, Xiao Fan, fearing that people outside might barge in and disrupt the order, immediately went outside.
Wan Qiqi stood in the corner of the courtyard, craning her neck to look, and finally spotted the figure on the stage in the crowd.
Her eyes trembled slightly.
It's him!
Is that old man asking for water over there Mr. Xu?
She felt this opportunity was truly wonderful, but without thinking of anything else, she decided to listen to the lecture in peace for a while.
What Master Xu said was not difficult to understand; it was just some simple policy advice, telling the people how to act and how to adapt to the times.
To put it simply, it's about better integrating the government and the people.
Of course, the topic of reading was also mentioned at this point, specifically the importance of everyone reading and learning to read.
Not for the sake of passing the imperial examinations, but to enrich one's life by acquiring knowledge and refinement.
But for small towns where even basic needs like food and clothing are a problem, these things clearly don't attract ordinary people; they only attract those who have a little bit of wealth.
Wan Qiqi's appearance also sparked discussion among the people below.
"Isn't that Manager Wan from Xinglong Restaurant? I didn't expect her to come to listen to Elder Xu's lecture."
"She ran a girls' school, so she must be interested in lecturing. It's just a pity that she was just a woman, and no matter how hard she tried, she could never achieve anything."
"Doesn't she even consider her own status? How can she possibly run a girls' school?"
"Even the famous scholars who give lectures here never mentioned starting a girls' school, did they? This woman is just delusional, she's gone mad!"
"More than that! I think this woman has gone crazy long ago to do such nonsense."
Suddenly, the lecturing on the stage stopped abruptly, making people wonder if Old Xu had overheard their discussion and was about to say something.
However, Mr. Xu didn't say anything, but simply stopped to take a sip of tea before continuing his story.
Only Wan Qiqi noticed that when Old Xu stopped, a hint of disgust flashed in his eyes.
The other person also saw her, made eye contact with her, and greeted her.
After listening for a while, Wan Qiqi felt that these comments were not particularly useful to her, so she turned around and prepared to leave.
As soon as she squeezed into the crowd, someone grabbed her wrist, which startled her so much that she jerked her hand away.
The person who was left behind paused for a moment, shushed her, and quietly squeezed out of the crowd.
"Sister Qi, are you alright?" Tao Jing asked, circling Wan Qiqi twice, seemingly to check if she was injured.
"I'm fine, I came back a couple of days ago! You can come out now?" Wan Qiqi asked.
"My father had people watching me and not letting me go out. Fortunately, Professor Xu gave a lecture this time, otherwise I don't know how long I would have been trapped." Tao Jing sighed, looked back at the house, and seemed a little downcast.
“It’s all in the past, let’s not dwell on it.” Wan Qiqi patted Tao Jing’s shoulder and said earnestly, “What Old Xu said was very good, you should go in and listen!”
"Sister Qi, don't take those rumors to heart..." Tao Jing hesitated for a long time before finally saying, "Actually, I think you are very brave and you did a great job. Don't let them affect you."
Wan Qiqi laughed out loud and said, "I'm really fine. I won't be defeated by rumors, and I'm not afraid of rumors."
Compared to the discussions about her when she first arrived, this is nothing.
She was just a little sad about her failure!
But it was only a slight sadness, nothing more, and I would not be defeated.
She is Wan Qiqi, the transmigrator Wan Qiqi, how could she possibly admit defeat like this?
After confirming that Wan Qiqi was truly alright, Tao Jing turned around and went back to the house to listen to the lecture.
Wan Qiqi glanced back at the house, then turned and left, returning to the restaurant.
At this moment, several tables of guests were sitting in the restaurant, seemingly somewhat dissatisfied with the dishes.
Some people even saw Wan Qiqi return and deliberately said some sarcastic things loudly.
"Sigh, I really don't know how to describe the taste of this dish. Just like people, once you get inside, it doesn't taste as good anymore!"
"Who says it isn't? It looks just like it came from a swill bucket."
"I don't know if these people have any conscience. They made such terrible food and still had the nerve to put it on the table."
"What could they possibly be embarrassed about? After all, they've just come back from jail, so they can all accept it..."
As they were talking, another person appeared beside them.
