Chapter 561 The Second Miss of the Xiao Family
As the saying goes, the brave are fearless.
People like Chen Yongnian often put justice first, seemingly unaware of the consequences of their actions.
But in his view, regardless of the other party's identity, the capture of thieves should be handled by the government, not by these wealthy families who can use torture on their own.
Even though the Xiao family came from the capital and held a high position in Yunhe County, they were now just commoners, not officials.
Just as the two sides were deadlocked, another guard appeared.
Upon seeing Chen Yongnian, the two men who were confronting him immediately toned down their arrogant attitude and bowed to the newcomer.
Chen Yongnian also raised his hand in a salute and said, "The money has been recovered. May I ask if the thieves can be dealt with by the government?"
The guard glanced at Chen Yongnian and waved for the other two to leave. "Now that the money has been retrieved, the person is to be handed over to Manager Chen for processing. I hope Manager Chen will uphold the law impartially!"
The phrase "enforcing the law impartially" is emphasized, making it seem as if this person has ulterior motives regarding upholding the law impartially.
Chen Yongnian seemed not to notice any of this, and bowed again, saying, "Thank you."
As soon as he finished speaking, he and the gamblers disappeared into the street.
"Boss, are we just going to let him go like this? He's too arrogant, he doesn't even respect the Xiao family."
"That's right! Even someone surnamed Liang has to show us respect, so why should we give way to this guy?"
The head guard glanced at the two men, his eyes cold, and rebuked them, "You can't even catch a thief, what else can you do? Go back and receive your punishment!"
The two men turned pale upon hearing this and immediately knelt down to beg for mercy.
"Boss, spare us! That thief was too cunning; that's why we couldn't catch him."
Another person chimed in, "Yeah, he's too cunning. We didn't want it to be like this either."
The argument between the two men did not soften the leader's expression; in fact, it made him even more furious.
"Then why was that official able to catch her? You don't even have his skills, how are you going to protect Miss!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the leader kicked each of the two men.
After being kicked, the two men quickly staggered backward, only stopping when they crashed into a stone wall.
They fell to the ground, blood trickling from the corners of their mouths.
The leader didn't even glance at them, turned and left, returning to the carriage. He bowed respectfully and said, "Miss, it has been handled as you instructed."
"Hmm." The voice inside the carriage was faint, almost devoid of emotion.
Shuang'er took the money pouch from the guard, tossed it a couple of times, and looked unhappy. "Miss, why give the person to that lowly official? He's nothing special."
"Don't you find this man interesting?" the woman in the carriage replied.
"Interesting?" Shuang'er looked puzzled. "Miss, you must have been out for too long to find this person interesting. Let me tell you, there aren't many interesting people in Yunhe County. If you really want interesting people, the capital is much more interesting."
“No, there are interesting people in Yunhe County too,” the woman insisted, then added, “Let’s go back to the manor. It’s so smoky outside, it’s making me uncomfortable.”
"Alright." Shuang'er got into the carriage and had someone drive away.
The carriage sped along, and passersby hurriedly dodged it, some about to hurl insults at it, but upon seeing the carriage clearly, they swallowed back their words.
This is the carriage of the second young lady of the Xiao family; no one dares to offend her.
Just then, Niu Yi walked out of the gambling den by the street, cursing, "Ugh, what bad luck I have, I lost again!"
He sighed, looked at the sun on the horizon, and then sighed again, "I finally got a day off, and my good mood is gone just like that. It's really annoying."
He walked along, muttering to himself, and soon disappeared into the crowd.
Yunhe County Government Office.
Chen Yongnian led the gambler straight to the prison, handed him over to Qi Yang, and said, "He should be a gambler. He lost money and then stole. Investigate him thoroughly to see if he has committed any other crimes. He must be severely punished."
Qi Yang ordered his men to take the prisoner to the jail, then left the cell with Chen Yongnian and said, "Normally when you arrest someone, you have people investigate their unspeakable secrets. Why the change today?"
“A gambler. If we let him out, he’ll just gamble again. It’s better to keep him in jail to prevent him from harming the people.” Chen Yongnian paused, his eyes darkening, and added, “He robbed the second young lady of the Xiao family.”
Upon returning, he inquired around and learned that the carriage he had just encountered belonged to Xiao Nian, the second young lady of the Xiao family.
Qi Yang's smile suddenly froze, his eyes filled with disbelief. "Miss Xiao Er allows you to take her away?"
"Yes," Chen Yongnian nodded in response.
Qi Yang's eyes suddenly became complicated, and he sighed, "You should be more careful in the future. You must know the status of the Xiao family in Yunhe County. They are people that even Lord Fang dares not offend easily."
“I did nothing wrong. Catching thieves is the duty of the government,” Chen Yongnian said solemnly.
"But do you know who Xiao Er is?" Qi Yang's eyes revealed a hint of fear as he said, "The Xiao family has four children. Xiao Da likes making money, Xiao San likes watching plays, Xiao Si is far away in the capital, but only Xiao Er has the most eccentric temperament."
A hint of doubt appeared in Chen Yongnian's eyes.
“Xiao Er is two years older than me, but she is still unmarried because she has a physical defect and a strange personality, so no one dares to marry her.” Qi Yang looked at the empty space outside the prison and sighed again. “However, Old Master Xiao loves his daughter and does not want her to suffer after marriage, so she is still unmarried at home.”
"What does this have to do with what's happening today?" Chen Yongnian asked, puzzled.
"Anyone who offends Xiao Er never lives to see the next day. Today, this person has offended Xiao Er, yet Xiao Er has ordered you to bring him back to the county office. There must be something fishy going on here."
