Chapter 15 Encountering a Snake
"Sister-in-law..." Chen Yongxing felt guilty because of Wan Qiqi's words. "Sister-in-law, I'm sorry, it's my fault..." He explained what had happened and lowered his head in remorse.
Wan Qiqi waved her hand helplessly, "It's okay, you're doing this for the family's good."
She was used to eating white rice, and white rice was cheaper in the mall, so she switched to white rice without thinking twice.
Unexpectedly, in this era, people are reluctant to eat white rice and would rather switch to brown rice so they can eat it for a few more days.
Ultimately, it was her lack of foresight that led to this incident.
With a loud crash, the courtyard gate was pushed open, and the door panel, unable to bear the weight, fell directly onto the yellow earth, raising a layer of dust.
Chen Yongliang rushed in, looking flustered, and ran to Chen Yongxing, circling him before asking, "Second brother, second sister-in-law, are you alright?"
"I'm fine, it's just that the food... is gone." Chen Yongxing lowered his head even further.
Chen Yongnian righted the fallen door panel, placed the basket on his back under the eaves, picked up the wood-chopping knife in the corner, and said, "Today we'll eat some wild vegetables first. I'll go chop some firewood and go to town early tomorrow morning to sell some and buy some grain."
Wan Qiqi looked on, picked up her basket, and chased after him in a few steps. "I'll go with you to pick some wild vegetables on the mountain."
She was still thinking about the crabs in the stream and wanted to catch some more to eat. Wild hairy crabs definitely taste better than farmed ones!
Chen Yongnian did not refuse and took Wan Qiqi up the mountain with him.
The two split up; Chen Yongnian chopped vegetables on the side, while Wan Qiqi appeared to be picking wild vegetables, but was actually catching crabs.
Chen Yongnian only glanced back occasionally to make sure the other person was safe, without paying attention to what she was doing, assuming she was just there to keep him company.
Wan Qiqi was excitedly flipping over the crabs, feeling very happy because she had caught several particularly fat hairy crabs.
Although she could make a lot of money by selling them, she still wanted to keep them to taste the fishy flavor, since she found the bitter-tasting wild vegetable porridge unpleasant to drink.
Danger descended silently. Wan Qiqi was happily holding a large crab when she caught a glimpse of a snake coiled around a rock. She dared not move.
Her breathing became rapid, and her scalp tingled. She had been frightened by snakes when she was a child, so the sight of a snake would make her legs go weak and she couldn't move. Even the sight of a gecko would startle her.
After Chen Yongnian tied the branches with vines, he found that there was no movement by the stream.
His expression changed, and he dropped the machete and ran towards the stream.
Parting the bushes, one immediately saw a person, a snake, and a crab facing off.
The snake flicked its tongue, staring at Wan Qiqi and the menacing crab in her hand. Neither of them moved, and they remained in a silent stalemate.
Wan Qiqi caught a glimpse of Chen Yongnian and felt as if she had seen a savior.
His lips moved, but no sound came out. He was so frightened that he startled the snake, which pounced on him and bit him.
Chen Yongnian showed no fear whatsoever upon seeing the snake; in fact, a glint of light flashed in his eyes. He approached the snake unarmed and quietly.
Wan Qiqi wondered: What is he going to do? Isn't he going to take a weapon?
As Chen Yongnian approached the snake step by step, Wan Qiqi's heart clenched, torn between fear of the snake and worry about Chen Yongnian's actions.
In the blink of an eye, Chen Yongnian lunged at the snake.
With lightning speed, he grabbed the snake's head with one hand and its vital spot with the other, firmly holding the snake in his grasp.
When Wan Qiqi saw the snake being subdued, her heart, which had been in her throat, slowly calmed down, but it was still pounding wildly.
Chen Yongnian grinned, "Wife, sell the snake tomorrow and buy grain!"
Wan Qiqi nodded, her mind a little muddled. Without caring about anything else, she hurriedly went down the mountain.
She didn't want to encounter a second snake!
Chen Yongnian frowned, thinking: What's wrong with my wife? Why does she look unhappy?
When Chen Yongliang saw Wan Qiqi return, he wanted to ask her why she came back alone.
Before I could even ask, the door slammed shut, leaving only a few "eight-legged worms" crawling out of the overturned basket.
