Chapter 39 Infected with the Plague
Ten days have passed since the plague was discovered.
The sweltering weather gradually cooled down with the autumn rain, making people feel comfortable.
Wan Qiqi sat in the main room, watching Li Chongniang's movements, lost in thought.
As the weather turns colder, the days ahead will be even harder to endure.
Summer days can be managed, but neglecting autumn and winter can lead to death from the cold, and the plague has no end in sight...
All of this gave Wan Qiqi a huge headache.
She now has a small sum of money that she can exchange for goods at the mall, but she can't openly take it out.
"Da Gen's wife, what's the matter?"
"Where is Wan Qiqi? I need to find Wan Qiqi!"
"She's busy. You can tell me if there's anything you need."
"Aunt Wang, I have nothing to say to you! Wan Qiqi, come out, don't hide at home!"
The noise in the courtyard grew louder and louder, with Aunt Zhao's voice clearly drowning out Wang's. She seemed determined to tear the Chen family apart if Wan Qiqi didn't come out.
Before Wan Qiqi could get up, Li Chongniang got up first and walked out with her pregnant belly sticking out.
"Aunt Zhao, what brings you here?" Li Chongniang gently stroked her swollen belly, then stood still at the doorway.
Aunt Zhao wanted to barge in, but stopped when she saw the pregnant woman at the door. She didn't stop talking, though, "Oh, Yongxing's wife, your belly is so big! What a pity, there's a 'troublemaker' in this house. You're six months pregnant and still have to work..."
Li Chongniang listened quietly to Aunt Zhao finish speaking before slowly saying, "Aunt Zhao, do you have so much free time to meddle in other people's business?"
Aunt Zhao suddenly realized something was wrong. Wasn't Li Chongniang at odds with Wan Qiqi? Why did she seem to be siding with Wan Qiqi now?
She thought about it for a long time, but still couldn't figure it out.
Suddenly, she remembered the purpose of her visit. She walked to the door, her tone harsh, "Get out of my way, I need to see Wan Qiqi!"
"She's not here." Li Chongniang remained standing at the door, showing no intention of moving aside.
Wan Qiqi leaned against the wall by the door and almost burst out laughing when she heard Li Chongniang's words.
She didn't realize that Li Chongniang had actually learned to lie!
However, she was very curious: what had she done to offend Aunt Zhao that made her come to her house to cause trouble?
In the past, there were occasional arguments, but they would just stand in the yard and curse a few words; they never intended to barge in.
Wan Qiqi lowered her eyes and thought for a while before turning around and walking out.
As Li Chongniang and Aunt Zhao were talking, they saw Wan Qiqi come out. They stopped mid-sentence, their voices tinged with displeasure.
She glanced at Wan Qiqi, as if to say: What are you doing out here?
Then she turned and went back to the main room, no longer wanting to deal with the matter.
As soon as Aunt Zhao saw Wan Qiqi, she rushed over, grabbed her by the neck, and pinned her against the wall, yelling, "Wan Qiqi, I'm going to kill you!"
Wan Qiqi was caught off guard, her face immediately turned red, and she found it difficult to breathe.
She tried to struggle, but couldn't break free.
"What are you doing? Let go!" Wang rushed forward, trying to pull Aunt Zhao away, but she couldn't budge her no matter what she did.
Just then, Chen Yongxing, who had been out, returned and saw the scene, so he rushed over.
Due to the disparity in strength between men and women, Aunt Zhao and Wan Qiqi were quickly separated.
Wan Qiqi slid down the wall and sat on the ground, covering her burning neck and breathing heavily.
For a fleeting moment, she truly thought she was going to die; she was completely disoriented!
Aunt Zhao was pushed and fell flat on her backside.
Looking up, she saw Wang Shi and Chen Yongxing's concern for Wan Qiqi, and tears welled up in her eyes. "You Chen family only know how to bully people!" she said, tears streaming down her face.
Wan Qiqi was stunned. Who was bullying whom?
If it weren't for the pain and burning sensation in her neck, she would have seriously doubted whether she was hallucinating, thinking that Aunt Zhao was actually sitting in her yard crying.
After a moment, Wan Qiqi calmed down and stood up with the help of Wang Shi and Chen Yongxing.
She knelt down in front of Aunt Zhao, looked her over for a while, and only after confirming that Aunt Zhao wasn't faking it did she ask, "I didn't do anything to you, so why did you try to kill me right away?"
Aunt Zhao wiped away her tears and choked out, "If it weren't for you, you little slut, eating those octopuses, my son wouldn't have gotten sick!"
As she spoke, she cried again, "My son is only seven years old! How can he survive if he goes into the epidemic area!"
Upon hearing this, Wan Qiqi silently took a small step back.
Eight-legged insects? Epidemic area?
She suddenly understood and roughly realized what was going on.
Perhaps he wasn't careful when eating crabs and ate something he shouldn't have, which caused him to get diarrhea and be sent to an epidemic area as if he had the plague!
This is a real headache, but all she's sharing is food!
She said calmly, "He probably just has ordinary diarrhea. He can come back after the doctor examines him."
“Come back? What do you mean, come back? How can someone who’s been in there possibly come out? Even the people guarding outside have been called back, and a new batch of people has been brought in!” Aunt Zhao felt waves of pain in her heart as she thought of her son who had been arrested.
Wan Qiqi was taken aback. Had it gotten worse again?
She then noticed that no one was watching today.
In the past, when Aunt Zhao made a call, a crowd would immediately gather around her, but today, even though Aunt Zhao was crying like this, not a single person could be seen.
"Hey, come back quickly! The Chen family might have been infected!" Zhao Dagen stood in his yard, looking at Aunt Zhao, feeling ashamed.
Aunt Zhao sniffed, wiped her snot on her sleeve, stood up and scolded Zhao Dagen: "It's all your fault! Why did you catch those eight-legged worms to eat? You caused trouble for your son, and you're still making sarcastic remarks!"
"What sarcastic remarks did I make? Was that what I wanted? It's clearly someone who was watching others being eaten and getting greedy, and then they insisted that I go and catch them!"
