Chapter 130 Literacy

When Haitang saw Dongfang Long return, she immediately said, "You're back. Let's eat something."

Dongfang Long nodded directly. Seeing that Haitang had calmed down, he immediately ran over, calling out, "Tangtang..."

"No, do me a favor during the winter," Haitang said. Dongfang Long nodded upon hearing this, though he didn't know what Haitang was referring to.

"I'll write the words, and you carve a wooden plaque for me," Haitang said. Upon hearing this, Dongfang Long blinked. Although he didn't know what the plaque was for, he still nodded.

Winter days are very irritable and boring. Haitang gave the defense vehicle to Xiuxiu's family. Not only Xiuxiu's family uses it, but Xiaocao also uses it.

When Haitang has nothing to do, she will carve stones with Dongfang Long. Dongfang Long doesn't understand why Haitang carves these things. "Come on, Xiaolong, find the name I taught you before."

When Haitang looked at Dongfang Long, she smiled and said that there was a pile of stones not far away, all of which were carved with words. Haitang had not given up on learning to read yet, but of course, putting it into practice was not easy.

Haitang's words made Dongfang Long nod, and he started searching. "Dong..." Dongfang Long still knew his own name, "Fang Long..." As he spoke, he found it, "Tangtang, look, yours is here too."

"Hmm, so good." Haitang said, and Dongfang Long immediately became unhappy, feeling that the word "good" should not be used on himself, but seeing that Haitang was also happy.

"Tangtang, what are you planning to do?" he asked, looking at Haitang. Haitang nodded and looked at Dongfang Long, then glanced at the object in her hand.

"We plan to open a school," Haitang said. Upon hearing this, Dongfang Long was slightly taken aback. "You must understand that learning and culture are essential for the development of civilization..."

So-called development is civilization, which means that many things can be recorded in writing, allowing more people to consult the written word and also to transmit information.

The reason Haitang is now considering this is entirely because the base has now entered a stage where everyone is well-fed and watered. After entering this stage, the only thing that can be done now is to study.

Upon hearing this, Dongfang Long nodded. "But I don't think anyone will come to study it." Dongfang Long wasn't trying to discourage Haitang; he was being honest.

“I know, so what I need is to encourage learning,” Haitang said. “Medicinal herbs and many other things may be unknown to others, and even if they are familiar with them, they may not know them. But if we encourage them, people will take the initiative to learn. Actually, I don’t expect much from the beastmen and females, but the little beastmen and little females are the future.”

The flowers of the future learn and absorb things very quickly. When Haitang asked which children could learn to read, she taught Xiaohe and Shihu from the beginning, hoping to change the illiterate.

In fact, Haitang has many plans that have not yet started. Learning to read is the first step, and the second step is money. Currency can enable rapid economic development, and people can directly deposit currency instead of accumulating goods.

Goods may spoil when piled up, but currency will not. Currency circulation can change the economy of a place, although this sounds like a joke now.

As Haitang looked at the carved characters in her hand, she had an idea in her mind: to teach people to read, something good would be needed.

Haitang can exchange papermaking skills in the system, but not yet. One condition doesn't allow it, and the economy doesn't allow it either. Haitang can only let this knowledge linger in the system for now.

Only by letting others know the importance of written language can we implement our written language plans. Haitang's words made Dongfang Long blink. He felt that what Haitang said made a lot of sense, but he didn't understand it.

However, Haitang didn't stand on ceremony. When others couldn't teach her, she would call over her own little ones, such as Xiao Ping'an, who was with Xiuxiu's family.

Shi Shui didn't have much to do. His home was close to Hai Tang's, so he simply left his child with her.

Changning sat obediently. Haitang was not far away, with a wooden board covered in leaves. Haitang also had some charcoal. "Ahem... I didn't call you here for anything else, I just wanted to teach you to read?"

"Words?" Upon hearing this, Changning glanced at the people around her and blinked. Xiuxiu was in a similar situation, though she had nothing else to do during the winter and would attend classes.

"Yes, that's the location. Changning, do you know your name?" Upon hearing this, Changning shook her head, as did everyone else around her. But Xiaohe immediately spoke up.

“I know my name, Xiao He…” Xiao He walked up and wrote her name on the leaf. Her sister taught her to write it, and Xingxing and Yueyue also remembered it.

Under these circumstances, Haitang nodded. "Yes, Xiaohe knows how to write her own name, but you only know what your names are? You don't know how to write them?"

Haitang began, "Today I'll teach you your own names." Upon hearing this, everyone blinked. "Of course, I can also tell you stories."

To get children to want to learn, we need to tell them stories so they can experience the joy of reading. When Changning and the others heard this, they all blinked. Actually, Changning wanted to say that she was going to find Guyue.

Xiuxiu was watching over him, and Haitang was looking for him. If he didn't come, his mother would scold him. Under these circumstances, he had to study obediently.

Haitang gave the children stones, each bearing her own name. Xingxing and Yueyue learned them, and then Haitang assigned them other tasks.
