Chapter 34 Dumplings

Haitang marinated and grilled the fish directly, giving each of Shi Hu and the others a large piece of grilled fish. Then she served them soup noodles and rice, with Shi Hu and Dongfang Long receiving the most.

There was an extra piece of fish, and Haitang also gave the two of them half a chicken. There was also yam. "Father, you must eat this. Xiaolong too." Haitang immediately put on a stern face when she saw Dongfanglong and Shihu's reluctance to drink the soup.

Soup is a very nutritious food. Shi Hu is now very weak and depleted, and he has been hunting with Dongfang Long these days, which is quite tiring for him.

However, even if Shi Hu doesn't go hunting and only lets Dongfang Long go hunting, Haitang still can't manage it.

What should she say? Although Dongfang Long was a slave she had exchanged, as a modern person, she couldn't possibly treat him as a slave. Now, Dongfang Long was a member of this family.

"Mm." Dongfang Long nodded and started eating. He ate a big bowl of rice noodles, a big bowl of soup and yam, and the two of them finished a whole chicken.

Haitang didn't seem to like the chicken; she only drank a little soup after the meal. The two little ones ate the most, with Xiaohe eating about the same amount as Haitang.

At night, Haitang and the others started sewing the quilt together, and then went to sleep.

The next morning, Haitang roasted a beggar's chicken for the two who had gone hunting. She had marinated the chicken the night before, and when she woke up in the morning, she started roasting it over a fire. Just as Shi Hu and the other man woke up, they could take the chicken and some rice balls to work.

After roasting the chicken, Haitang cooked sweet potato noodles for the children, adding some lean meat. After they finished eating, Haitang didn't look for anything to eat; instead, she started cleaning and threshing the wheat.

Shi Ming's house is very close to the crabapple tree, and he can smell its fragrance every day. When he comes to see the crabapple tree, he asks, "What are you doing? Can this grass be eaten?"

"This isn't grass, it's wheat. Once it's made into flour, there will be many kinds of food." Pancakes, steamed buns, all sorts of wheat-based foods.

Upon hearing this, Shi Ming looked at Haitang and asked, "What about the tree roots you and Yueyue dug up yesterday?"

"That's called Chinese yam, it's good for your health," Haitang said. She didn't tell Shi Ming about the foods he could eat, but she would tell him if he asked.

Haitang started filtering the flour through a cloth. The process of making flour was similar to that of sweet potato flour, except that the flour tasted better. However, Haitang couldn't help but purse her lips. "By the way, Uncle San... could you make me something? A stone mill?"

Now that Haitang has a stone mill, she no longer needs to grind by hand. Having a stone mill makes things much simpler and easier. Upon hearing this, Shi Ming looked at Dongfang Long.

"That's fine, but this wheat has been used to make food. Could you let me have a taste?" Shi Ming had seen the whole process, so if it was really edible, he planned to go and collect some.

When Haitang heard this, she was a little surprised. "Okay, I'll send it to you tomorrow." Haitang nodded, not too opposed to the idea.

Shi Ming watched the whole thing from then on and didn't leave. Haitang didn't rush him away either, but watched the whole process.

The crabapple tree was used to make flour all day long. As for this tree, it wasn't thrown away; it was used to feed the chickens and other animals.

This was the first time Shi Ming had ever seen a crabapple tree successfully grow something, and it did so every time. Under these circumstances, Shi Ming began to consider doing the same thing.

No one would complain about not having enough food, at least not in this situation. Haitang's family had plenty of food. There was wheat not far away, and they watched as Shi Hu and Dongfang Long brought the wheat back.

Shi Ming couldn't wait any longer. Without even eating, he carried a basket on his back and went to pick some. The place he went to was different from the place where Shi Hu and the others went.

The orc tribe was very large, and the orcs were very strong on their feet. Shi Ming broke off a lot of them and dried them in the sun, intending to see if they were actually delicious.

On that day, Haitang made some flour. The next day, around five or six o'clock, Haitang got up and started making pancakes with the flour.

I couldn't make steamed buns today, but I could make flatbread. I didn't put chili in the flatbread, but it tasted good. Haitang got some chili sauce for the two of them.

"Uncle and I aren't going to gather wheat today; we're planning to go hunting instead." Hearing this, Haitang nodded. Dongfang Long said, "Don't go alone either. The wheat there has been harvested enough. I'll go get some when I have time. It's too dangerous for you to go alone."

As Dongfang Long spoke, he ate a little something, then left with the flatbread and chili sauce. Shi Hu also gave some instructions and left. Haitang started kneading the dough, intending to make dumplings.

They used about a hundred dumpling wrappers and started chopping and mincing the meat. Early in the morning, Xiaohe got up, and Haitang said, "Xiaohe, go get some sweet potato starch and make some noodles to eat today."

Xiao He nodded at Haitang's words. Haitang was making dumpling wrappers. She had prepared the rolling pin from the beginning. When Yueyue woke up, Xingxing was still sleeping. "Yueyue, come here..."

Yueyue nodded and walked to Haitang's side. Haitang took out dumpling wrappers and handed Yueyue a plate of filling. "You follow your sister and we'll make dumplings." Hearing this, Yueyue nodded.

Haitang taught Yueyue step by step. Yueyue learned a little slowly, but after a few tries, she started to get the hang of it. At first, she was a little slow at making dumplings, but... she could catch up with the speed if she took it slow.

When Xingxing woke up, Xiaohe had finished making the sweet potato noodles and served them directly in the clay pot. They started eating on the table. "Sister, what are you and brother doing?"

"It's dumplings. Xingxing will come and help make them later. I'll make you some fresh food at noon," Haitang said. Dumplings are delicious, nutritious, and most importantly, simple to make.

Under these circumstances, Haitang prepared a lot of flour and some fermented milk, planning to use these things to make flatbread tomorrow. As for steamed buns, since she didn't have a steamer, she could only wait.

After eating, the children started making dumplings. With their combined efforts, they made about three hundred dumplings. Haitang cooked a dozen or so in a small pot and then took them to Shiming, who had just returned from picking wheat.
