Chapter 10 The Lin Family Old House

When the two sisters arrived, their thirteen-year-old cousin, Shitou, was having a great time chasing chickens and teasing dogs in the yard with his little nephew.

"Sister Er Ya, what brings you here?" Sharp-eyed Shi Tou looked up and saw the two of them, and stopped making snide remarks.

Lin asked him quietly, "Is Grandpa inside?"

"Didn't our grandpa go to your house to visit your second uncle?"

Lin smiled knowingly: "I knew you'd dare to pull that dog's tail. So our grandpa wasn't home. You never learn. If you pull that dog's tail bald, you'll be in for a beating!"

"Hehehe..." Stone chuckled foolishly at what was said.

As the siblings were talking, someone came in from outside and said, "You two are back?"

"Master, you're back."

Feeling guilty, Stone immediately and cleverly greeted Old Master Lin with a hint of ingratiation.

"Master." Lin Momo and Lin Sanya quickly greeted him.

Grandpa Lin glanced at his two granddaughters and said to his grandson, "Take them out and have fun, but don't let them cause trouble!"

Before long, the two sisters followed Grandpa Lin into the main room.

After taking their seats at the head of the table, Old Master Lin placed his pipe on the octagonal table and spoke first: "So? Did you two manage to borrow the money?"

Since the old man had visited her home, Lin Momo wasn't surprised that he knew about her borrowing money.

"Grandpa, we've borrowed it!" Before she could speak, Lin Sanya excitedly raised the purse in her hand and reported the good news to her grandfather.

The little girl was overjoyed to know she wouldn't be sold, as if she had been given a second chance at life.

Perhaps in her mind, if she were sold by her family, she would be killed like Xiaohua in the village.

A slight smile appeared on Old Master Lin's serious face as he said approvingly, "Not bad, I didn't expect you to actually manage to borrow it. From which family did you borrow it? How much silver did you borrow in total?"

As he spoke, he grabbed the pipe on the table, began filling it with tobacco, and waited for his granddaughter's reply.

This time, Lin Sanya didn't rush to answer. Instead, she tightly gripped the purse she had just displayed back in her hand, as if afraid of losing it.

Lin smiled and answered truthfully, "However, it's only fifteen taels."

Just as I was about to briefly recount how I borrowed the money, the old man exclaimed in surprise, "How much?"

With a "thud," the old man was so startled that he dropped his pipe to the ground.

"Fifteen taels," Lin Momo repeated.

Fearing he wouldn't believe her, she took the sweaty purse from Lin Sanya's hand and placed it on the table along with the five taels of silver she had on her person.

Staring at the gleaming silver, Old Master Lin finally had to believe that the two sisters had indeed borrowed fifteen taels of silver.

Taking the pipe from his granddaughter, Old Master Lin said urgently, "Tell me quickly, how did you manage to borrow it? What family would lend so much money to a little girl?"

I thought the two of them would leave empty-handed.

Unexpectedly, they actually got the silver back.

Who on earth is this, spending money so recklessly?

No, it should be said that they are kind-hearted; anyone who lends money is a good person!

Grandpa Lin puffed on his cigarette, listening quietly as his granddaughter recounted how she had borrowed the money.

After listening for a long while, he slowly said, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, "I'll go to the village head this afternoon. As for Fan Dalang, it's best not to make a fuss. His stepmother is a troublemaker; to avoid further trouble, we can quietly return the money to him later when we have it."

"He was a good child, but his mother died young. His stepmother came in and had a son, and she started making trouble all the time, saying she didn't have money and wouldn't let the child go to school."

"It was Dalang's maternal grandfather who couldn't bear to see his grandson, such a promising student, go to waste. He went to the village head and offered to pay for his grandson's education. That's how he was able to pass the imperial examination last year and bring honor to our village."

"Granddaughter will listen to her grandfather."

Lin Momo originally intended to keep it a secret.

She knew that someone had kindly lent her money, so she couldn't cause them any trouble; she had that much awareness.

"Fifteen taels of silver, that's quite a lot!"

When Grandpa Lin first heard this, he was really surprised. He never expected that his unknown granddaughter would accomplish such a great thing.

Even if Mu Sheng's wife went to the village to borrow money, she wouldn't be able to get that much money back.

This granddaughter really impressed him.

This strengthened his resolve to protect his two granddaughters.

Such a capable granddaughter shouldn't be sold off by that foolish mother and son.

Looking at the family now, only Er Ya has some ability; the rest are useless.

Moved by what he said, Grandpa Lin reassured his granddaughter: "Don't worry, with me here, no one would dare to sell you out!"

I received this one sentence from the old man.

Lin Momo's heart was finally at ease.

She was truly afraid that even if she borrowed the money back, it wouldn't be enough to dispel the mother and son's desire to sell her.

Old Master Lin was a man of few words but a man of his word. He was always fair in his dealings and a man of his word.

None of the four sons dared to disobey their father, and naturally, none of the daughters-in-law were unafraid.

With tears welling up in her eyes, Lin Momo struggled to suppress her grievances and said gratefully, her voice choked with emotion, "From now on, my little sister and I will definitely... take good care of Grandpa."

"My second sister and I are both filial to our grandfather."

Lin Sanya also stepped forward to make a promise to Old Master Lin.

"Good children! You are all good children!"

Old Master Lin took the pipe out of his mouth, looked at his two granddaughters with satisfaction and praised them, then said, "I'll take another fifteen taels here, to make it thirty taels of silver."

"Tomorrow morning, I'll have your uncle take you to the county in a mule cart to invite that young imperial physician from Huichuntang to examine your father."

It seems the Lin family ancestors were indeed wealthy.

This is fifteen taels of silver; it must be the old man's retirement money.

I wonder what his three sons will think when they find out?

If they start making a scene at the urging of their wives, they'll probably become a laughingstock in the village.

However, the old man's willingness to take it out must not be a momentary impulse.

Lin Momo was certain that he had a backup plan.

This is money that could save a life. Anyone who dares to covet it will be severely punished by the old man, who is desperate to save his son.

Lin Musheng may not have had a good son or a good wife, but he did have a good father, so he is quite fortunate.

In transmigration farming novels, the female protagonist's father is always the hardest worker who eats the least, unloved by his parents, and an old ox who won't shed a tear even if he's dying.

Did Lin Momo wander onto the wrong film set?

Could you perhaps find her a loving family instead?

Ideally, she should be the kind of girl who's the darling of the group, so that this poor thing can experience what it's like to be pampered.

"Grandpa, Mom's back and cooking! She asked if Er Ya and San Ya are eating here?"

Suddenly, Shi Tou's shout shattered Lin Momo's daydream.

This is the aunt they've never met reminding them to go home for dinner.

Ever since the family split up, whenever the second branch of the family came to visit, the eldest aunt felt that they were there to freeload.

Of the four Lin brothers, the second branch was the most down on their luck, and they also had a troublesome son.
