For the sake of the baby in her womb, Lin Daya didn't stand on ceremony with her sister and ate whatever was offered to her.
They say that having many lice doesn't make you itch and having many debts doesn't make you worry. Having received so many benefits, what's a little more food?
After a hearty meal, Lin Daya's mood improved significantly, and a genuine smile spread across her face.
She held Lin Momo's hand and said gratefully, "Er Ya, when my baby is born, he must kowtow to you, his aunt, a few times. If it weren't for your help, this child would have died long ago."
Before she was pregnant, her mother-in-law always scolded her for being a hen that couldn't lay eggs. Now that she's been married for two years and is finally pregnant, the family doesn't seem to care much about her.
It was as if the child was born to her.
Seeing that she brought it up herself, Lin Momo asked, "As soon as I entered your village today, I heard that you almost had a miscarriage a few days ago. What exactly happened?"
Lin Daya smiled bleakly, "What else could it be? There's not enough food at home. Every time we eat, my siblings and I fight and bicker over every bite."
"That day, I finished cleaning the kitchen and was about to go out to eat when someone bumped into me and I fell to the ground. My stomach hurt terribly, and soon after, I started bleeding. I was lying on the ground, in pain and scared, afraid that I would lose the baby. My mother-in-law said that we didn't have money to hire a doctor, so she asked my brother-in-law to carry me back to the kang (a heated brick bed) to lie down."
"Fortunately, I had the money you gave me earlier. I told my brother-in-law to take the thirty copper coins he had hidden in the rat hole and run to the neighboring village to fetch a doctor. When the doctor arrived, he used a few acupuncture needles to stop the bleeding. He said that if it had been half an hour later, the baby in my belly would not have survived."
After a long while, Lin Daya, the person involved, still didn't know who had hit her.
However, it seems that this was purely an accident, but it is outrageous that the Cai family would not call a doctor. Is it because they do not have enough food at home that they do not even want their grandson?
Lin Momo was still very angry.
She was incredibly grateful that the money she had left for her eldest sister that day was for her emergency use. Cai Dalang was also sensible; he didn't leave her eldest sister and her child to their fate just because her parents refused to call a doctor.
"Sister, are you still taking your medicine?" After suffering so much, you should take good care of your body.
Lin Daya sighed softly: "I took a few doses of medicine and felt better, so I stopped. Even so, my family still scolds me and your brother-in-law for being unfilial. Our parents are still alive, and we dare to hide money from them. How could I dare to continue taking medicine? I didn't dare to pay the doctor for the medicine; I still owe him. I told my family that I bought the medicine on credit."
She didn't mention that her mother-in-law had come to her room and searched through drawers and cabinets for money, but since she hadn't succeeded, she didn't want to bring it up and embarrass herself.
As for what just happened, her mother-in-law and brother-in-law teamed up to force her to pay money. If her second sister found out, given her stubborn nature, she would definitely cause a scene with the Cai family.
Lin Momo knew Lin Daya's predicament and wanted her to temporarily escape her suffering and recuperate properly. Otherwise, the child might not survive. Even if it did, the child's health would be compromised, and survival would be even more difficult.
So she whispered a few words in her older sister's ear.
Lin Daya's face lit up with joy, but then she stopped smiling and hesitated for a moment.
Just then, a little girl's voice came from outside the room: "Sister-in-law, I've come to talk to you."
Lin Momo and Lin Daya exchanged a knowing glance, then quickly put the fabric and tonics they had taken out back into the bamboo cage, leaving only the small clay pot on the cabinet lid.
Soon, the door was pushed open, and a girl of about ten years old walked in. She had a shy and timid expression. Her gaze first swept over Lin Momo, who was sitting on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), and then fell on the clay pot on the cabinet lid. Her eyes lit up immediately.
"Sister-in-law, what's in that pot?"
A faint fragrance filled the room, and the little girl sniffed it as she walked over.
Lin Momo was surprised that this seemingly timid girl was quite direct in her speech. She smiled and said, "Your sister-in-law is pregnant, this is to nourish her body."
"Lotus, what brings you here?"
The little girl had long, narrow eyes filled with longing: "I'm not feeling well either, sister-in-law, could you give me some to eat too?"
As he spoke, he reached out to lift the lid of the casserole.
Lin Momo quickly pressed the lid down, then asked with a smile, "The villagers said your sister-in-law almost miscarried a few days ago. Can you tell me who pushed her and almost caused you to lose your nephew?"
Upon hearing this, the little girl avoided eye contact with Lin Momo.
"Here, if you just say the word, I'll give you both the chicken and the soup." The lid of the casserole was opened, and a rich aroma of chicken soup wafted out.
"You really want them all?"
Outside, Cai Erlang emerged from the kitchen and approached Shi Guang, sitting down next to him on a low stool. He kept saying how hot the weather was this year and how impressive Shi Guang's mule cart was.
After rambling on for a while, he finally stammered and pleaded with a shameless grin, "Young Master Shi, since we're relatives, could you... could you lend me a few taels of silver to get married?"
Shi Guang thought he had misheard. He had heard of people borrowing money to get married, but he had never heard of someone borrowing money to get married from someone they had just met.
I stared in disbelief at this dark-skinned, honest-looking young man, but from the way his eyes darted around, I knew he was quite cunning and had his eyes set on his sister-in-law's family.
Poverty makes people lose their ambition. Perhaps Cai Erlang was forced into this unconventional path.
But even though time sympathized with him, it knew that this money couldn't be lent out easily.
