Chapter 26 Add Two Dishes

According to Dr. Ma, after three days of acupuncture, the person should wake up.

Today is the third day. Lin Momo couldn't help but look up at the setting sun. Hmm, it should be around three o'clock in the afternoon.

Let's make lunch first.

Dr. Ma is not used to the two meals a day in a farmhouse and must be hungry long ago.

As for her, she came out without eating breakfast. Around noon, she took a steamed bun from her space to fill her stomach. The heavy physical labor of the day had already digested and absorbed all of that steamed bun. When she was about to return, she was so hungry that she swallowed another steamed bun.

"Didn't you say he'd wake up today? It's almost dark, and he still hasn't woken up. I told you to listen to me, but you wouldn't listen. That kind-hearted sorceress came all this way to treat you, and your father-in-law doesn't appreciate it at all, he even sent her back. How can he have the nerve to ask her to come again later..."

"Grandma, I'm back." Lin Momo walked into the courtyard and saw the mother and daughter huddled together criticizing Grandpa Lin again, so she loudly interrupted Xu Wangshi's next words.

Madam Xu glanced over and said unhappily, "You're back, so why are you making such a fuss? Go to the kitchen and cook with Sanya. Your mother is pregnant and can't stand being hungry."

"Mother, you don't know, this brat has a terrible temper these days, and she even dares to yell at me."

Xu was like a wronged young wife. As soon as she saw her mother, she was reminded of the sad things that had happened in recent days and immediately began to complain to her mother.

She had only said one sentence when she saw that Lin Momo didn't go to the kitchen immediately, but instead spread the pine cones in the basket on her back to dry in the sun. She couldn't help but get angry and scolded, "You brat, you're like a wild horse that never goes home once you leave the house. You come back and make me angry. Hurry up and cook. Do you want to starve me to death?"

Ever since Xu's mother arrived, she felt that she had someone to back her up, and her temper, which had only been suppressed for two days, started to grow again.

Well, with just one sentence from Lin Momo, all the firepower has been drawn to her.

She rolled her eyes inwardly, not having time to deal with the odd mother and daughter duo. She slowly hung up the basket of pine cones she had brought back and went into the kitchen to find some peace and quiet.

"Second sister, you're back?" Lin Sanya greeted Lin Momo warmly. "You don't need to lift a finger, I've already started cooking, it'll be ready in a little while."

This girl is so thoughtful.

Lin Momo smiled slightly and said, "Really? Sanya is so capable! Let Second Sister see what our Sanya cooked today?"

As he spoke, he went to the stove, lifted the heavy wooden pot lid, and steaming hot steam immediately rushed out of the pot.

"White rice soup, steamed buns, and pickled vegetables, isn't that what we eat every day?" Lin Sanya, sitting on a small stool and pulling the bellows, asked in confusion.

"Oh, Second Sister was just asking."

Lin smiled awkwardly, trying to hide her embarrassment. Looking down at the steamer, she saw only four dark-colored steamed buns and asked, "Why are there only four steamed buns?"

It's even made with white flour!

No one knew where Xu had hidden the steamed buns; she certainly hadn't found them in the kitchen.

Xu was pregnant and had to eat two at a time. The remaining two were, needless to say, for Xu's mother and son. Even if there were no portions for the sisters, why didn't even Doctor Ma get any?

“Mother said that our family has less land and harvests less grain than the eldest son’s family. With another mouth to feed, and we’re not even eating ourselves, she’ll let Doctor Ma go eat with Uncle’s family.”

Xu is trying to be clever again.

She thinks that since Dr. Ma lives in the main house, the main house should provide her with meals. She doesn't even consider that her husband's life is in his hands, yet she dares to be stingy with food and doesn't think about the consequences at all.

Forget it, they probably wouldn't be used to her family's simple food.

The old house was different. Some families there had more money in their pockets and ate rice and flour every day, and could even have meat every three to five days. In terms of food, there was a significant difference between them and the second family.

But it's one thing for family to eat together, but it's quite another to let unrelated outsiders eat here. Not to mention Aunt Lin, even Uncle Lin would definitely not be happy about it.

She had also made preparations in advance; once it was ready, she would send it directly to Doctor Ma to add a dish to his meal.

"No need to light a fire. Just put a piece of firewood on the fire and let it burn by itself. Go to the vegetable garden and pick some radish greens. Remember to pick the tender ones."

Lin Momo planned to cook two dishes: stir-fried radish greens and steamed fresh fish with soy sauce.

These two things can be prepared in a quarter of an hour and will be delivered to the old house before dinner.

She picked out the largest grass carp from the small basket on the ground, weighing less than two pounds. She quickly gutted it, scraped off the scales, cleaned it, made diagonal cuts on it, and marinated it with shredded scallions and ginger.

Just then, Lin Sanya returned with a handful of tender green radish leaves in her hand. Smelling a fishy smell, she immediately noticed the fish that had been prepared on the cutting board. Her eyes lit up, and she asked curiously, "Second Sister, what are you making?"

"Make two dishes and send them over to Doctor Ma in a bit," Lin said quietly, her hands busy as she spoke.

She lifted the pot lid, found the hemp ropes at both ends of the steamer, quickly hooked them with both hands and lifted them up. She glanced into the steamer and thought the rice porridge was cooked to perfection. She turned to Lin Sanya and urged, "Dinner is ready. Wash the vegetables and then take the rice out."

"Okay." Lin Sanya obediently found a basin to scoop water to wash the vegetables, but her little face was obviously a little gloomy.

Hearing that the fish was being prepared for Doctor Ma, Lin Sanya was tempted, but being a precocious child, she knew that even if the fish stayed at home, it would still be her mother's and wouldn't end up in her stomach, so she stopped thinking about it.

Although Lin Momo was busy serving rice and didn't see her expression, she could hear a hint of disappointment in her "Oh," and couldn't help but comfort her, "Second sister caught a lot of fish today, I'll cook them for you another day."

"good!"

It was the same word, but this response was noticeably more cheerful, and Lin Momo smiled knowingly.

While Lin Sanya was serving the food, Lin Momo had already washed the pot, added water again, and started steaming the fish.

Under the eaves, the Xu family mother and daughter, along with Lin Zhiqiang, sat around a small table, enjoying steamed buns and pickled vegetables.

Xu's family was poor and they lived a very frugal life, only able to eat steamed buns made of white flour during the Lunar New Year.

At this moment, as she chewed on a steamed white flour bun, Madam Xu felt that she had made the right choice in marrying her daughter. The Lin family's ancestors were indeed county magistrates, and their wealth was greater than that of other families. Every time she visited her daughter's house, she could eat steamed white flour buns.

Even though the family has spent a lot of money on treating their son-in-law's illness, they can still afford to hire a doctor in the county and eat white flour buns that poor families can't afford.

Suddenly, Xu Wangshi, with her keen sense of smell, twitched her nose twice and smelled an extremely tempting aroma in the air. She immediately withdrew her chopsticks from the plate of fermented vegetables and stopped chewing.

Before she could make a further move, her daughter exclaimed, "It smells so good!"
