Unaware of what was going on, Lin Momo was knocking on the Fan family's door.
She knocked on the door for a long time but no one answered. Perhaps everyone was inside and her knocking was too soft for them to hear.
Fortunately, the door was ajar, so she pushed it open and went in without hesitation.

The two sisters held hands and strolled in slowly, making noises to try and lure people out.

A slightly plump woman in a cloth skirt and wooden hairpin walked out of the main room, her sharp eyes scrutinizing the two sisters from head to toe.
Ignoring the disdain in her gaze, Lin Momo quickly and politely greeted her, "Hello, Auntie!"
"Oh, aren't these the two girls from the second branch of the Lin family at the south end of the village? What brings you to our house today?" the woman said with a light laugh.
Lin Momo was already going all out to borrow money, but seeing the woman's smile, she just couldn't bring herself to speak.
She's the type who says she's shameless, but her sense of shame hasn't completely disappeared.
Based on her social experience from her previous life, Lin Momo realized that this woman was quite difficult to deal with, and trying to squeeze a single penny out of her was simply wishful thinking.

Since they were already there, the two sisters couldn't just say "Sorry, wrong place" and run away in a panic.
Lin Momo sped up her pace, racking her brains: "Uh, we want to see if there's any chores our aunt and I can do at her house?"
"What?!"
The woman was taken aback, her shrill voice instantly rising eight octaves as she asked incredulously, "You've come to our house to work? Is there really such a good thing?"
Lin Momo barely managed to suppress the urge to cover her ears, her eyebrows flying wildly.
Lin Sanya, standing beside her, gripped her second sister's hand tightly, hoping to hide behind her.
After a long while, Lin Momo's startled soul finally returned to its place, and she comfortingly squeezed her little sister's hand in return.
Seeing the woman staring at her intently, she quickly composed herself and blurted out flattering words: "Auntie, your house is such a nice brick and tile house, it's really impressive!"
His tone was full of envy, and he successfully pleased the woman with just one sentence.
Seeing that her smile deepened, Lin Momo breathed a sigh of relief. It's true that you can't hit a smiling face.
Knowing she had flattered him successfully, she pressed on, "In our village, besides the village head's family, your family is one of the wealthiest. It's clear you're a very fortunate person. With two sons studying in your family, you're destined to be an official's wife someday. How could you possibly do menial tasks like washing clothes and chopping wood?"
"Why don't you... Auntie, spend a few dollars and hire us two sisters to do it?"
"Auntie, you must have heard that my father is lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) waiting for a life-saving treatment. We know it's not easy for your family to support two students, so we don't want to ask you for money. We were thinking of coming here to find some work so we can earn some money for my father's medicine. Is that alright, Auntie?"
"You sweet talker, but don't even think about borrowing money. I don't have any work for you to do. Go back and take care of your father!"
The mere mention of money feels like cutting flesh from her body.
The smile on the woman's face vanished instantly.
Lin Momo wasn't disappointed; it was just another shoe dropping, something she had expected.
After glancing at the open window of the side room, Lin Momo took Lin Sanya's hand and said goodbye before leaving.
"Who are you? Coming to my house to borrow money? Don't you even know if you can pay it back? My son's schooling costs so much money, how could I possibly lend you any?"
The whispers behind her reached her ears, and Lin Momo tightened her grip on her younger sister's hand, pulling her quickly out of the Fan family's courtyard.
"Whoa—"
Lin let out a silent sigh. The more joyful she was when she arrived, the heavier her steps became when she left.
I was planning to "rob the rich to help the poor," but I ended up being humiliated. I'm so angry!
In Lin Momo's mind, a little voice was jumping around and violently beating a sandbag.
"Second sister, second sister!"
Lin Sanya shook off Lin Momo's hand and called out to her repeatedly.
"Uh, what's wrong?" Lin Momo asked, looking bewildered as she woke up.
Lin Sanya turned her head to look behind her, "Was that brother calling us?"
"Second Miss Lin, please wait."
A young man, dressed in a blue cloth robe, walked over from not far away.
At that moment, a flash of lightning struck Lin Momo's short-circuited mind, and she vaguely recognized the boy.
I can't figure out why he chased after me.
The two of them hadn't interacted before, had they?
"This is ten taels of silver that I earned from copying books. Take it and use it to treat Uncle Lin's illness."
The boy handed over a slightly worn coarse cloth pouch. Seeing Lin Momo in a daze, he smiled faintly and said, "Take it. Uncle Lin held me when I was little. I hope he gets better soon."
These words were spoken with utmost sincerity.
"Little sister, come here, hold this for your second sister."
Perhaps remembering the strict separation between men and women, the young man turned and handed the purse to the still young Lin Sanya.
Lin Sanya glanced at her second sister and, seeing that she didn't intend to refuse, grabbed the purse that was right next to her.
I will pay you back!
Seeing the boy turn to leave, Lin Momo blurted out hastily.
