Chapter 28 Learning to Hunt

Lingxi paused, looking down at the little ones. "Not here? Where did she go?"

She immediately started cursing: "My son is still lying in bed. Has she gone out to seduce someone again? She doesn't want her child or her husband. This shameless female beast, how could my son marry such a thing?"

The children all looked very unwell.

Little Sibao pouted and said unhappily, "Grandma, don't say that about my mother. My mother went to my maternal grandmother's house. She said she would be back soon. My mother is very good and will not abandon us."

Lingxi snorted, poking Xiao Sibao's forehead with a look of exasperation, making Xiao Sibao stagger from side to side.

“Silly kids, how could you believe her if she didn’t say that? How many times has she lied to you?”

Da Bao pulled Xiao Si Bao away from Ling Xi's clutches, and said with a straight face, "Xiao Si Bao is right."

Erbao and Sanbao also said, "Yes, Grandma, please don't hit Xiaosibao."

Lingxi felt a little embarrassed by the watchful eyes of the children. She coughed and said, "Alright, let's not talk about this anymore. Dabao, go and get some meat for Grandma."

Da Bao didn't move. Grandma always does this when she comes, asking their family for meat. Before Daddy was injured, she would take a lot of the game every time they hunted.

Later, when my father fell ill, my grandmother still asked them for meat, and even took some of the meat that my father had bought for medicine.

Thinking of all this, Da Bao clenched his little fists.

The other children were also very angry. When their grandmother came over, she didn't even mention going to see their father. She just asked for meat. Humph, when their mother wasn't better, they had no food and ran to their grandmother. But their grandmother hid all the meat in the house and didn't give them any.

They don't want to give it to Grandma anymore.

The children said in unison, "We don't have any meat at home."

"Nonsense! You're so young, yet you dare to lie! Your mother hunted a snow wolf just yesterday, everyone in the village knows that, and you still want to fool me? I'll beat you to death!"

Lingxi picked up a tree branch, ready to go and beat up a few cubs.

The children scattered in all directions, and Lingxi chased after them, cursing, "You ill-mannered little bastards, you motherless scoundrels, today I'll teach you a lesson on behalf of your father."

"Who are you going to teach them for?"

Shen Miao, accompanied by the old female beast, seemed to descend from the sky. The cubs, upon seeing her, let out a joyful scream and ran to Shen Miao, chattering excitedly to tell her their stories.

"Mother, you're back. Grandma's going to beat us."

“If we don’t give her meat, she hits us, but we don’t have much meat left, and my father needs medical treatment.”

Shen Miao patted each of her children's heads and comforted them, "Don't be afraid, Mom is back. As long as Mom is here, no one can lay a finger on you."

Lingxi felt a little guilty when she saw Shen Miao, but she quickly straightened up and pointed at Shen Miao, saying, "Shen Miao, as a grandmother, if my grandsons are disobedient, can't I discipline them?"

“Where did my little one disobey? Did he not listen to you and go get you the meat, or did he not listen to you and stand there obediently while you hit him?” Every word Shen Miao spoke was irrefutable.

Lingxi was furious and embarrassed. "Like mother, like son. You are no good mother. No wonder you raised such a child."

Shen Miaoqi laughed.

"When the kids see you, they obediently call you Grandma. I don't see anything wrong with that. But if I don't give you meat, then I'm guilty of a heinous crime. So I want to say that my kids did nothing wrong."

"You, how dare you treat me like this, Shen Miao, this is unfilial!" Lingxi was furious.

Shen Miao raised an eyebrow. "If that's what you're talking about, then let me tell you properly. When Qingchen wasn't sick, when did he ever hunt any game without sharing it with you? Even when Qingchen was sick, you still came to take food quite often. And you, as the children's grandmother, have they ever eaten a single bite of your meat? Besides, you've been here for so long, have you even gone in to check on Qingchen once? Do you even know what your son is like now?"

"You abandoned your son a long time ago, but you still come running over here for a bite to eat. I'm asking you, where do you get the nerve? Are you trying to fly to the moon and compare yourself to it?!"

Lingxi was speechless after hearing those words and couldn't refute them at all. She was so embarrassed that her face turned red, and she secretly resented this ugly thing. When did it become so eloquent?

Before, he was clumsy with words and could only hurl insults at her, and he couldn't even win an argument with her. Now, he's reasoned and has evidence, leaving her no chance to even get a word in edgewise.

Lingxi knew she wouldn't get any meat today, so she could only spit on the ground in frustration and turn away.

The children were overjoyed to see that Shen Miao had managed to send her grandmother away with just a few words, and they crowded around Shen Miao and her maternal grandmother as they went into the house.

Qingchen was still sleeping. Shenmiao instructed them not to tell their father that their grandmother had come.

The children, being very sensible, agreed.

Then they curiously circled around the old female beast. They weren't actually very familiar with her because she hadn't come over much since Shen Miao had been acting like that before.

"Grandma, are you coming to live with us? Will you leave again later?"

"Grandma, Grandma, Mom's cooking is so delicious! Sanbao and I love Mom's rice cakes the most."

"I like to eat it too."

The old female beast was surrounded by her cubs, her face beaming with laughter. Seeing that they were having a great time, Shen Miao ignored them and went to the kitchen to cook.

There was one more person eating today, so Shen Miao made an extra dish: in addition to the roasted meat, there was also mushroom soup. The soup was so delicious that everyone almost swallowed their tongues.

Da Bao kept stealing glances at Shen Miao, and after hesitating for a long time, he finally reached out with his chopsticks and picked up a piece of meat for Shen Miao.

Shen Miao was surprised for a moment, then burst into laughter.

This is the first time Da Bao has served her food. Does this mean that Da Bao is about to break down this little one's defenses?

Da Bao was a little embarrassed, his face almost buried in the bowl. Shen Miao was afraid he would be so ashamed that she quickly said, "Da Bao is so amazing. I love eating this kind of roasted meat that's a little charred. You observed very carefully."

Encouraged by the praise, Da Bao mustered his courage and asked Shen Miao, "Next time you go out, can you take us with you?"

"Hmm?" Shen Miao asked, puzzled.

Da Bao said shyly, "If you go hunting in the mountains, could you take us with you? I'd like to learn how to hunt from you too."

Today's events made Da Bao realize that he needs to grow up quickly, otherwise he will always be bullied. He wants to protect his younger siblings, his father, and... the person in front of him.

Seeing Da Bao's serious face, Shen Miao agreed.

Ultimately, strength determines survival here. The stronger you are, the greater your chances of survival. She doesn't want to keep them confined; given the opportunity, she'd like to take them out to experience life.
