In the days that followed, Ah Li stayed home, embroidering handkerchiefs during the day and going to bed early at night.
Once she had collected enough embroidery pieces, she told Old Man Lin in advance to go to town with her.
The gossiping village women stopped lingering outside Ali's house.
Sometimes when they went to town, Ali would buy Old Man Lin a few pieces of clothing and shoes.
