Chapter 41 Sugar Water

Then, he said to Yao Qingshuang in a carefree manner, "Mom, Shitou and I will go around and see if we can hunt any wild animals so that we can have some meat for the family."

After saying that, Su Wenjun and Zhou Shitou walked away quickly, arm in arm, laughing. Their backs showed a sense of relief, as if they had escaped from some huge "trouble".

Seeing them leave, Yao Qingshuang was not worried. One of them was as strong as an ox, and the other used to call the mountains his home and had rich hunting experience. What they should worry about were the pheasants and rabbits in the mountains.

Yao Qingshuang skillfully scooped out bowl after bowl of sugar water. She first handed the first bowl steadily to Old Man Zhou (Zhou Shitou's father).

Old Man Zhou was sitting on a stool nearby. When he saw the sweet soup handed over by Yao Qingshuang, his face immediately lit up with smiles. The wrinkles on his face seemed to stretch out like a blooming chrysanthemum.

He quickly stretched out his hands and carefully took the bowl of sugar water, muttering, "Thanks to my in-laws, I never thought I could drink such a rare red date sugar water while fleeing famine! Well, I won't be polite, I'll drink it first."

"Drink, drink, you're welcome." Yao Qingshuang said with a hearty smile.

Old Man Zhou held the bowl of sweet soup, his face full of cherishment.

He first took a small sip of the syrup, his movements so gentle as if he was afraid of disturbing the sweet taste of the syrup.

Then, he slowly closed his eyes, and the expression on his face became extremely comfortable. He just quietly savored the taste of the sugar water. Looking at him, he was enjoying it very much, as if this mouthful of sugar water could make him forget the fatigue and hardship of fleeing from famine.

Su Mingfan couldn't wait to pick up his bowl of sweet soup. When he saw the bright red dates in the bowl, his eyes lit up with joy. He was so excited that he couldn't even describe it.

He first leaned over to the bowl and sniffed hard. The sweet aroma went straight into his nose, making him swallow his saliva.

Then, he took a big gulp of the sugar water, and the sweet taste instantly spread in his mouth.

He was surprised to find that the already sweet red dates became even sweeter after adding sugar. The sweet feeling was like countless little hands dancing on the tip of his tongue.

Su Mingfan drank up the sweet soup in his bowl in just a few gulps, but his greedy nature would not be satisfied like that. After drinking it, he stared at the sweet soup in his brothers and sisters' hands that he had not finished drinking, with a look of desire in his eyes, hoping to get a few more sips of sweet soup from others.

Zhou Xiaowu sat aside and saw his cousin Su Mingfan drinking happily, and he couldn't help but feel curious.

So, he slowly picked up his bowl of sugar water and took a sip, imitating Old Man Zhou's behavior.

As soon as he took a sip, the sweet taste immediately made his eyes light up. He couldn't help but sigh in his heart: "No wonder my cousin likes to drink it, it tastes really good!"

Then, he began to drink slowly, savoring the rare sweet taste on the road of fleeing famine.

In fact, Su Minglan had been thinking about this bowl of red date soup for a long time. The sweet aroma kept drilling into her nose, making her feel itchy.

But out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of her younger brother Su Mingfan, who looked like a greedy cat. His small eyes were fixed on the bowl of sugar water in someone else's hand, and he looked as if he couldn't wait to snatch all the sugar water in the other person's bowl and drink it up.

So she picked up her bowl of sugar water, turned around gently, facing away from everyone, avoiding Su Mingfan's gaze.

She lowered her head slightly, looked at the tempting syrup and the plump red dates in the bowl, hesitated for a moment, and finally made up her mind and took a small sip.

She was afraid that if she didn't drink it, her mother would ask her to give the sugar water to her brother.

The moment the sweet syrup touched the tip of her tongue, a rich sweet taste instantly spread in her mouth. It felt like countless sweet little flowers blooming in her mouth.

Su Minglan's eyes narrowed all of a sudden, her face full of intoxication and satisfaction. She couldn't help but sigh in her heart: "How sweet!"

This sip of sugar water seemed to dilute some of the hardships and grievances she had experienced while fleeing famine, allowing her to feel a rare taste of happiness during this difficult journey.

Zhou Xiaowen was slowly drinking the bowl of red date syrup in his hand. The sweet taste spreading in his mouth made him feel quite enjoyable.

But out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Su Mingfan staring at his bowl of sugar water. His eyes were full of desire, like a starving puppy. Zhou Xiaowen felt a little bit sorry for him.

After hesitating for a moment, Zhou Xiaowen sighed softly and handed the sugar water he had just taken a sip of to Su Mingfan, saying with a bit of pampering, "Cousin, let me give you some of mine!"

Su Mingfan had been staring at Zhou Xiaowen's bowl, and when he saw him hand it over, his eyes suddenly lit up.

He quickly reached out to take it, and without saying too many words of thanks, he took a big sip from the bowl.

The sweet syrup flowed down his throat, making him squint his eyes in satisfaction.

After taking a big sip, he said with a grin, "Cousin, I'll only drink one sip, and I'll leave the rest for you!"

Su Mingyang, who was standing by, couldn't help laughing when he saw his brother Su Mingfan's greedy look.

He thought to himself, this little guy is so capable that he can't even walk when he sees something delicious.

Thinking about this, Su Mingyang handed the bowl of sugar water in his hand to Su Mingfan and said, "Here, drink it!"

Seeing this, Su Mingfan's eyes widened even more, and the look of surprise was written all over his face. He shouted excitedly: "Wow, big brother is so nice! I only have to drink one sip of yours!"

After saying that, he happily took another sip of the sweet syrup, then carefully returned the bowl to Su Mingyang. Then, like a happy little rabbit, he hopped away, humming a tuneless little tune.

Su Wencheng was also drinking the sugar water here. He took two sips slowly at first, but the more he drank, the more he felt that the sugar water was too sweet and a bit greasy.

He frowned slightly and looked at his wife, Li Zhaodi, who was sitting next to him. Something in his heart moved him, so he gently poured the remaining sugar water in his hand into his wife's bowl and said gently, "Zhaodi, drink more. This sugar water is too sweet, and I feel a little sick of it."

Li Zhaodi didn't expect her husband to suddenly pour the sugar water on her. She was stunned at first, but then she reacted and smiled gratefully at her husband.
