Chapter 5: On the Road

Su Mingfan, sitting on the swaying ox cart, opened his big round eyes and saw his brothers and sisters walking steadily beside him. He suddenly felt unbalanced.

He twisted his little body and started to make a fuss at the top of his voice, insisting on getting down and walking. He looked so stubborn.

His father, Su Wencheng, was already feeling distraught from the long journey. Upon hearing his youngest son's crying, he angrily threatened, "Why are you walking? You can't walk fast! With your short legs, how can you keep up with the group? If you come down, we won't wait for you! We'll leave you alone in this wilderness and let a tiger take you away!"

When Su Mingfan heard this, his little face turned pale with fright and he burst into tears. His cry was so loud that it was particularly harsh in the silence of the road.

Hearing the crying, Yao Qingshuang couldn't help but give the second son Su Wencheng a look, and hurried to the ox cart to coax her grandson.

"Mingfan, don't cry. You're crying so loudly, maybe the tiger will be called down by your crying. That would be dangerous. Mingfan, be good and don't cry." Yao Qingshuang said as she gently patted Su Mingfan's back, trying to comfort him.

But the little guy Su Mingfan was very scared. He cried breathlessly, hiccuped, and his little body twitched.

Seeing this, Yao Qingshuang shook her head helplessly and had to use her trump card - she quietly took out another piece of rock candy from the supermarket space and quickly stuffed it into Su Mingfan's mouth.

Hey, you're right, the little guy stopped crying immediately after eating the candy, but he would still sob occasionally.

Wow, I can finally have some peace and quiet!

Yao Qingshuang breathed a sigh of relief and a relieved smile appeared on her face.

Children have limited physical strength, and Su Minglan's face turned red with fatigue after walking for a while. Yao Qingshuang quickly asked her to rest in the car for a while and then continue walking after she had recovered her strength.

The family supported each other and slowly moved forward on the road to escape famine.

Yao Qingshuang looked at the tired faces of her family members and knew that on the road to escape famine, they had to make sure everyone was well fed so that they would have the strength to continue on their journey.

So she hurriedly took out the flatbreads she had prepared from the car and carefully distributed them to her family.

These cakes were specially baked for this escape from famine.

In order to preserve them during the long journey and to save precious drinking water as much as possible, a lot of effort was put into baking the cakes.

The baked pancakes are dry and hard to the touch, but they give off an enticing burnt aroma.

After the family got the pancake, they were worried at first that it would not taste good. But when they put it in their mouths and chewed it, they found that although the texture was dry, the burnt aroma instantly spread in their mouths. It didn’t feel bad at all. On the contrary, it was quite chewy and could really fill their stomachs.

Everyone ate the burnt-smelling bread, tried their best to replenish their strength, and continued on their journey to escape the famine.

Li Zhaodi reached out and snatched the pancake from Su Minglan's hand. Ignoring Su Minglan's surprised and somewhat aggrieved look, she tore off half of it and handed it to Su Mingyang, muttering, "Mingyang, you're still growing, eat more."

Su Minglan immediately became unhappy, her lips pouted, her eyes slightly red, and she cried, "Mom, you took away half of my cake, I don't have enough to eat!"

Li Zhaodi, however, looked impatient and frowned as she scolded, "Why would a girl eat so much? It's a waste. Let your brother eat more! Mingyang, eat quickly and leave her alone."

Su Mingyang listened to his mother's words and looked at his aggrieved sister. He felt a little sorry for her and handed the half of the pancake back to Su Minglan, saying softly, "Mom, one pancake is enough for me. My sister is also hungry. Let her eat it."

Li Zhaodi was stunned when she saw this. She looked at her sensible son, then at Su Minglan who was holding the pancake. Finally, she could only reach out her hand helplessly and pat Su Minglan on the back, still saying stubbornly, "Humph, look how good your brother is to you. Don't be an ungrateful person in the future. If you don't know how to be grateful, you will be so heartless!"

Su Minglan was slapped by her mother and almost choked to death on the biscuit in her mouth. She quickly swallowed the biscuit with force and rolled her eyes speechlessly.

I thought to myself: My brother and I have a good relationship. It would be even better if you weren't so partial and always took my brother's side.

Humph, I really don’t know why mother always treats my brother and me differently.

In the early morning, a red sun slowly rises from the distant horizon. At first, its light is relatively soft, and it just gently covers the earth with a layer of light golden gauze.

But as time went by, the sun gradually rose higher, its dazzling light became stronger and stronger, and the weather slowly became warmer.

Nearing noon, the sun was already hanging high in the center of the sky. Its huge, disc-like body was so big that it was a bit frightening.

It releases its scorching light without reservation, and that light is like countless hot golden needles, piercing straight into every corner of the earth.

Moreover, the heat carried by the light was even more astonishing, as if it was going to completely melt the entire world. The scorching breath hit one's face, just like being next to a huge furnace, making people feel unbearably hot and there was simply nowhere to escape.

At this time, the village chief looked up at the scorching sun and couldn't help frowning, thinking that the sun was too hot and he didn't want everyone to get sunburned.

Coincidentally, it was lunch time, and the village chief thought that he should let everyone take a break and have lunch to replenish their energy.

So the village chief hurriedly walked to the middle of the team, picked up the gong hanging on the tree, and started to beat it hard.

"Dangdangdang..." The clear and loud sound of the gong echoed in the village, signaling everyone to cook and rest on the spot.

The one-hour break passed in a flash, and the village chief picked up the gong again and struck it twice.

"Dangdang", the two gong sounds were particularly crisp and loud in the village. It was a signal to continue moving forward, indicating that everyone should pack up and set out on the road again.

When the villagers heard the gong sound, they had some complaints in their hearts. After all, they had just rested for a short time and their physical fatigue had not yet completely disappeared. Now they had to hurry on again, which really made them feel unhappy.

But everyone also understood the importance of itinerary arrangement and hurrying on the journey, so they got up one after another from their resting places, carried their luggage, and reluctantly followed the team.
