Chapter 150 Grandmother Jia's Gift
"Sister Lin, you're a bit older than me, how come you haven't lost your baby fat? You look even more plump than you did in the other mansion. You were too thin before, but now you look just right. If you could gain a little more weight, I think you would be even more beautiful," Xiangyun said very seriously.
"I eat quite a lot every day. After practicing my boxing in the morning, I get hungry again in no time. Then I take a walk in the courtyard with Lan Su, and by noon I feel like all the food I ate is gone." Daiyu smiled and counted how much she ate throughout the day with Xiangyun.
"Whether it's fruit, cakes, or soups and desserts between meals, none of that counts as a meal. My nanny said that girls have a separate stomach for desserts and snacks in addition to the one for regular meals. She said that food is the best way to nourish the body and mind. Especially for someone like me who used to be in poor health and ate very little of any kind of food. Now that I'm healthier and can eat more, my body will regulate itself, making me unconsciously have a big appetite and want to eat more. Now is the time to make up for all the neglect I did to my body in the past few years," Daiyu said with great seriousness.
Xiangyun wholeheartedly agreed, “Sister, what you said is absolutely right. I was sick a while ago and couldn’t eat anything. After I recovered, my appetite returned, and I felt that I ate a lot more than before. It must be my body making up for the food I didn’t eat when I was sick.”
Yuan Hongqu came in just in time to hear Daiyu trying to seduce Xiangyun. Unexpectedly, Xiangyun was actually being led by the nose by Daiyu.
This little rascal!
Daiyu looked up and saw Yuan Hongqu looking at her with a half-smile, as if she knew she had seen through her. She couldn't help but smile guiltily and wink at Yuan Hongqu.
Well, let them talk nonsense, it's harmless.
Children are all kids; who doesn't talk nonsense when they're young?
Yuan Hongqu suppressed a smile and said, "Miss Yun and Daiyu, why don't you go to the courtyard and take a look? The old lady sent over some things for you to play with."
Yuan Hongqu came in after hearing from a servant that Old Madam Shi had sent something to Daiyu, and after taking a look herself, she invited Daiyu and the other girl to go out and see for themselves.
Daiyu and Xiangyun exchanged a glance, both somewhat puzzled.
Why does the old lady still have time to send her things? Doesn't she blame me? Daiyu wondered.
Xiangyun thought to herself that since this person was the old lady's darling, she had tried to invite her several times but hadn't been able to. This was to save Sister Lin the trouble of running errands and to have the things delivered directly.
The two went to the courtyard to look, and Daiyu was even more puzzled.
The things sent by Grandmother Jia were dazzling: little trinkets that girls liked, various small ornaments and antiques, and even a whole box of jewelry.
There are pieces of jewelry here that have been around for years; some look quite old, while others still look brand new.
“Miss Lin, these are things that the old lady has wanted to teach you for a long time. Most of these are pieces of jewelry that the old lady has been collecting since my great-aunt was a child. If my great-aunt liked something, she would bring it with her. If my great-aunt thought it was just ordinary, she would leave it with the old lady. After my great-aunt came to the Lin family, the old lady did not change her habit. She would still collect these from time to time to bring back to my great-aunt. Even after my great-aunt went to Yangzhou, the old lady continued to do so, but she never waited for my great-aunt to come and take these away.”
Yingluo slowly told Daiyu the origin of these objects and jewelry. Over the years, the collection had grown to a value exceeding ten thousand taels of gold. They originally belonged to Jia Min. The old lady would take them out to look at them from time to time, reminiscing about her and imagining how happy Jia Min would be to see these things...
Daiyu remained silent until she had paid her respects to her mother, at which point a huge weight was lifted from her heart. When the old lady brought these things, she only thought of her mother and did not feel particularly sad.
“Sister Yingluo, please go back and tell Grandmother that I will go and kowtow to her another day. These things…” Daiyu was somewhat at a loss.
Clearly, when Grandmother Jia sent these things to her, she meant that she could do whatever she wanted with them. It was also a way of telling her that in Grandmother Jia's heart, her mother, Jia Min, held a very high position. The old lady was not angry that Daiyu did not go to Rongguo Mansion because she went to perform a religious ceremony for Jia Min.
"Let someone take it and put it in the main room first," Yuan Hongqu said in a deep voice.
She hadn't expected Old Madam Shi to pull such a stunt. If she had known the origin of this box of jewelry, she would have definitely gone out and had it served to Daiyu.
This is nothing short of stabbing Daiyu in the heart!
Yuan Hongqu suspected that the old lady might have deliberately brought these things out to provoke Daiyu.
“Granny, why keep such beautiful jewelry? Since my grandmother gave it to me, I can do with it as I please. These old ones must be the ones my mother didn’t like. We have the same taste. My mother thinks they’re plain, and I don’t think they’re that great either.” Daiyu picked up a pair of sky-blue jade pendants. The clarity was excellent, and they wouldn’t be out of style even now.
"Let's donate these to a charity auction; as for those that can be disassembled and remade into different designs, let the craftsmen try to make some different ones, and then we'll take a look..."
Daiyu did not believe that placing these things in the main room was their final destination.
Now she believes that everything should have its value and should be used to its fullest potential.
I imagine my mother in heaven would be very pleased if I used these things to do good deeds.
"Sister Yun, let's sort them out together. Which ones are better to donate, and which ones can be made into new jewelry?" Daiyu called to Xiangyun to help sort them out.
The two little girls happily sorted and categorized the items, finishing in no time.
Lin Daiyu then picked out several more pieces of jewelry for Xiangyun.
Shi Xiangyun simply declined.
"Miss Yun, please take it. When our second young lady came to stay last time, our young lady also gave her a box of jewelry!"
“Zijuan is right, Sister Yun. With our friendship, what’s a little something to give you?” Lin Daiyu handed the small box to Cuilu.
"Take this for your daughter; I'm going to take her for a walk in the yard!"
After returning home, Amber and Yingluo told Grandmother Jia about Daiyu's behavior. Grandmother Jia sat there in a daze for a while after hearing this.
This child understands everything, is worldly-wise but not cynical, and possesses a precious, innocent heart.
"Grandmother, it's the New Year, and Master has punished Baoyu again." Madam Wang couldn't bear it, so she came to plead with the old lady.
"He'll get tired just from writing a few words," Grandmother Jia said calmly.
"If guests ask about Baoyu during the New Year..." Madam Wang asked tentatively.
