Chapter 61 Radish Cake
Baoyu sat up abruptly in bed, startling Xiren, who was about to wake him up again.
"Oh dear, Second Master, now that you're awake, you should get up quickly." Qingwen was a little anxious when she saw that Baoyu had just woken up and was looking dazed.
"Second Master, the Second Gate has come to ask several times, saying that the Second Master is going to the school today to test your studies."
With Baoyu looking so foolish, he's probably going to get a beating.
Qingwen thought to herself.
"Baoyu, Baoyu... did you catch a chill at night? Or you could ask the school for leave and not go today." Xiren also noticed something was wrong. If the Second Master were to take the exam like this, he would definitely fail.
Upon hearing the voice, Baoyu stared blankly, turning his head to look around. He saw Xiren and Qingwen beside him looking at him with concern.
He suddenly threw off the covers and got out of bed.
"Get up, I'm fine."
He felt as if he had been dreaming, and when he tried to recall what he had dreamed about, he couldn't remember it at all.
The master is testing his son's studies today, so he absolutely cannot be absent.
Qingwen and Xiren finally breathed a sigh of relief and called for a maid outside to bring in water. The two of them then dressed Baoyu and helped him wash up.
After finishing his business, Baoyu hurriedly went to pay his respects to the old lady, ate a couple of bites of snacks, and rushed to the second gate.
Daiyu, from Rongyue Courtyard, slept soundly through the night, and woke up in the morning with a rosy glow on her face.
Zijuan took the clothes and placed them on the stove to warm them up, then brought them over for Daiyu to wear.
Looking at Daiyu's fairy-like appearance, Zijuan felt that she was really lucky to be able to serve Miss Lin.
Miss Lin is generous and kind-hearted; even at such a young age, she exudes an air of elegance and grace.
Who wouldn't love a girl like that!
Zijuan tied Daiyu's sash, then knelt down to straighten the hem of her dress. Just as she was about to stand up, she heard Daiyu ask...
"Zijuan, where is my nanny?"
In the past, when Daiyu was getting dressed and washing up in the morning, Yuan Hongqu would usually come over to check on her. This morning, she had already finished getting ready, but she still hadn't seen Granny Yuan, which made her feel a little strange.
“Miss, Second Madam Lian came early this morning to invite Granny Yuan over, saying that she has something important to ask Granny Yuan for help.”
Daiyu pouted slightly, feeling a little disappointed.
Why did Sister Feng steal the nanny away again?
The nanny is hers!
"I'll go practice my boxing first, and then eat when Granny comes back."
Daiyu felt a little unhappy. When she stepped out of her room, she felt that the air outside was cold and clear.
She took a deep breath, feeling a cool and refreshing sensation filling her senses. As she slowly exhaled, a misty white vapor filled her vision, and the slight discomfort vanished completely.
Daiyu walked behind the swing set on one side of the courtyard and struck a pose.
She has now mastered the Eight Pieces of Brocade so well that she doesn't need to think about what the next move is; her body can perform the movement directly.
Lin Daiyu practiced the Eight Pieces of Brocade three times and felt warm all over.
As soon as she finished her stance, she heard a round of applause, followed by Granny Yuan's gentle voice:
"Daiyu performed the Eight Pieces of Brocade exceptionally well this morning, like a butterfly flitting through a flower garden. I was completely mesmerized."
Although Yuan Hongqu's words were somewhat exaggerated, Daiyu couldn't help but be happy. She practically skipped over to Yuan Hongqu's side.
"Granny, I'm waiting for you to have breakfast together!"
"Let's go, I got up really early today and made you some fresh pastries." Yuan Hongqu took Daiyu's hand.
Daiyu naturally placed her hand in Yuan Hongqu's palm, and then leaned her whole body against her:
"Granny, I woke up and didn't see you. I'm not happy. Even fresh pastries won't help."
The little girl pouted and spoke in a soft, sweet voice, but there was a hint of complaint in her voice.
Yuan Hongqu smiled as she held the warm, soft little hand.
“Your sister Feng said that a Taoist nun is coming to the house today, and she was afraid it would disturb you, so she specifically asked me to go and tell you.”
"Granny, it's not worth you making the trip for such a small matter. She could have just sent someone to tell you. She doesn't want to use her own people and insists you go in person. It's so cold this early in the morning. Doesn't she care about people?" Daiyu said as she walked, both dissatisfied and distressed.
Yuan Hongqu felt a warmth in her heart, and also felt sorry for Daiyu for getting revenge on her behalf, so she smiled and said:
“Daiyu, don’t be angry. If it were an ordinary matter, she wouldn’t have come to me. I heard that she invited Baoyu’s godmother, who is registered under his name, because Baoyu had a dream last night, and she came to interpret it today.”
"Granny." The two stepped into the dining room. Upon hearing this, Daiyu stopped and spoke in a haughty, old-fashioned tone.
"Dreaming? What's wrong with that? Everyone dreams, right? But he's so precious that he needs someone to interpret his dream. Well, he was born different from others, he has an extra piece of jade."
Upon hearing this, Yuan Hongqu couldn't help but laugh out loud. The idea that Baoyu was "born with a jade in his mouth" was something Daiyu couldn't accept.
Baoyu felt disappointed after he once eagerly showed Daiyu his jade pendant, only to be met with Daiyu's complete disdain.
Yuan Hongqu felt that ever since that incident, Daiyu would tease Baoyu about his "spiritual jade" whenever she had the chance, making Baoyu so angry that he didn't want to wear it anymore.
However, everyone in his family, from top to bottom, treated him as if he were facing a great danger whenever they saw him not wearing that magical jade, saying that it was his lifeline.
Baoyu has gotten used to it now, but he still feels a little ashamed to wear that piece of jade all the time.
She used to adorn that magical jade with necklaces and jewels, but now she only has a simple red string tied to it and tucked inside her clothes, afraid that others will see it.
And he will never mention his magical jade to anyone again.
After Daiyu made that teasing remark, her mood brightened, and she happily sat down at the dining table to see what fresh food Yuan Mama had prepared for her that morning.
When Xiangtao saw the two of them arrive, she instructed the kitchen to set out breakfast.
Besides the usual side dishes and congee, there were two items that were appearing on the table for the first time.
First comes a plate of golden fried rice, with each grain of rice distinct, and egg flowers mixed with the rice like osmanthus blossoms, making it look incredibly appetizing.
Next was a stack of small, square pastries, white with specks of gold on top.
This pastry was the first time she had ever seen it. Daiyu ate a small piece; the outside was crispy and fragrant, while the inside was soft and chewy.
Unlike the delicate and soft pastries we usually eat, this one has a rich texture and flavor. Upon closer inspection, you can even detect bits of ham inside, along with an indescribable umami taste.
Daiyu ate two pieces, but her mouth was full of salty and fragrant flavors, and she still couldn't tell what it was.
“This is radish cake,” Yuan Hongqu said, picking open a piece of cake to show Daiyu the shredded radish inside.
Daiyu usually couldn't stand the taste of radishes, and when Yuan Hongqu said it was radish cake, she involuntarily frowned.
