Chapter 18: Love in the Rain

Xu Zhiyi's life as an educated youth was truly ordinary yet fulfilling. He consistently earned high work points, finished his work early, and successfully became the most talked-about person in Xiangyang Village. He was a skilled worker, and what shocked the villagers even more was that Xu Zhiyi was incredibly strong.

This shocking example is Lin Daiyu uprooting a weeping willow tree.

Dark clouds filled the sky, pressing down heavily. The sky, which had been bright just a moment ago, suddenly became dim. Suddenly, a heavy downpour began to fall, thunder rumbled, lightning flashed in the dark clouds, and the rain became heavier and heavier.

Before the workers in the fields could react, they were soaked to the skin. No one cared about their work and rushed home.

Jiang Wanqiao stood up suddenly in a panic. Everything in front of her eyes was dark, followed by a strong feeling of dizziness. Due to the delay, when she recovered, she found that there was no one in the field.

The rain was pouring down, and she could only walk slowly towards the educated youth station. Under the dim sky, visibility was low, and the dizziness continued, making it difficult for her to concentrate and see the road clearly.

She missed a step and fell on the muddy road. She felt a sharp pain in her right foot and realized she had sprained her ankle.

Jiang Wanqiao sat in the mud, looking miserable. She didn't cry at all the times, facing her stepmother's harassment, her father's indifference, and the difficulties of working in the countryside. She accepted all the grievances she suffered, but she couldn't bear it at this moment.

I tried to stand up several times but failed, tears streaming down my face. Rain and tears washed over me, and I wiped them with my soaked sleeve, not sure if it was tears or rain.

The sound of heavy rain drowned out the sound of her breaking down and crying.

"Are you okay?" A man's voice came from behind.

Jiang Wanqiao looked over in the direction of the voice and quickly wiped the tears from her face with her sleeve, "Fu Zhiqing, I twisted my ankle."

Fu Huaijin walked forward and looked at the bewildered girl. His heart moved slightly, "It's raining too hard now, it's hard to see your injury. I'll carry you back to the educated youth site first." As he said that, he squatted down in front of Jiang Wanqiao.

Jiang Wanqiao hesitated for a moment, then leaned forward and put her arms around Fu Huaijin's neck. The moment he was carried on her back, she let go of his arms and quietly stiffened her body to avoid touching her upper body with her back.

Fu Huaijin easily carried Jiang Wanqiao on his back. The warmth from the inadvertent friction between his arms and neck, and the softness that occasionally hit his back, made Fu Huaijin feel a little uncomfortable, and his ears turned red.

Jiang Wanqiao felt the broadness of this man's back as he carried her back through the rain, steady and confident. The coldness of the raindrops falling on her body was no match for the warmth emanating from this man.

The man's broad back radiated warmth, and she couldn't help but wrap her arms around Fu Huaijin's neck and lean towards his back.

I'll just lean on you for a while, it'll be fine in a moment. Jiang Wanqiao's eyes began to well up with tears again.

The heavy rain washed away everyone along the way. When they arrived at the entrance of the educated youth camp, Fu Huaijin put Jiang Wanqiao down and said, "Comrade Jiang, let me help you go in!"

Jiang Wanqiao looked at Fu Huaijin with red eyes, which made Fu Huaijin's hands itchy and he wanted to touch this cute rabbit.

Forget it, don't scare her.

"Oh? Okay, thank you Comrade Fu." Jiang Wanqiao reacted belatedly and spoke so softly that Fu Huaijin could hardly hear.

Fu Huaijin held her arm and walked into the educated youth site. It was difficult to find any fault with her through her sleeve.

Everyone at the educated youth camp was busy returning to change clothes, boil water, and prepare to take a hot bath. If you caught a cold or a fever on this day, it would be very uncomfortable.

Fu Huaijin helped Jiang Wanqiao to the door of the female educated youth's house, which was ajar. Fu Huaijin leaned sideways, looking away, "Comrade Xu, Comrade Gan, is anyone in the room? Comrade Jiang sprained her foot. Please come out and help her."

When the two people in the room heard Fu Huaijin's voice, they quickly put down the towels in their hands and went out.

"Qiao Qiao, what's wrong with you? Come in quickly." Gan Tiantian said as she reached out to support Jiang Wanqiao and wanted to go in.

"I felt dizzy on the way back from running when it was raining, and I twisted my ankle without noticing."

"Comrade Fu, thank you for today." Jiang Wanqiao thanked Fu Huaijin.

"It's okay. Go in with Comrade Gan first and change into dry clothes quickly. Don't get sick."

Jiang Wanqiao nodded shyly, held Gan Tiantian's hand, and walked into the house.

Xu Zhiyi looked at the mud on Jiang Wanqiao's body and hands, took her basin and went out to fetch a basin of warm water.

"Wash the mud off your body first and change your clothes quickly, so you don't get sick."

Jiang Wanqiao looked at the two people busying themselves for her, and her eyes began to warm up again. "Thank you, Zhiyi, Tiantian."

"Stop saying that. We are all educated youth living in the same room. We should help each other. Don't be so distant." Tiantian took out the clothes that Jiang Wanqiao had changed into.

After Jiang Wanqiao had tidied herself, she sat on the bed and wiped her hair with a towel.

There was a knock on the door, and Xie Tang's voice came, "How is Comrade Jiang? I have some medicated oil here. Give it to her and rub her feet. She will feel much better tomorrow."

Xie Tang pushed the door open and walked to Jiang Wanqiao's bedside. "Don't get up. Hurry up and rub this medicated oil on yourself. If the pain is too severe to walk tomorrow, I'll ask the team leader for leave for you."

Jiang Wanqiao was deeply moved by Xie Tang's thoughtfulness. "Sister Xie Tang, thank you. How much is it? I'll give you the money." Then she turned around and rummaged through her bag to find the money.

"Oh, what money do you need? This is what I left over. I think it's enough for you. If you need anything, just give me a shout. We come from different places and are unfamiliar with this place. We should help each other."

Xie Tang's words seemed to have some hidden meaning.

Xu Zhiyi raised an eyebrow but didn't respond.

"Thank you, Sister Xie Tang. I'm sorry to have caused you trouble." Jiang Wanqiao didn't hear anything unusual and her tone was full of gratitude.

Xie Tang didn't receive any response from the other two people, so he stopped talking to Jiang Wanqiao and just told her to call her if she needed any help.

Xu Zhiyi hadn't expected that the heroine, who seemed aloof and quiet at first, would turn out to be so innocent. She'd easily trust anyone who treated her well. No wonder Song Lan's clumsy, flawed attempts at discord in the original novel were so effortless.

The heavy rain outside the window continued to wash over the earth. The heat from the scorching sun was carried away by the rain. The rain gradually stopped only when it got dark.

There was no entertainment at this time of year, and reading through the dim fiber optic cable at night was difficult and hurtful to the eyes. With nothing to do, everyone just went to bed.

Xu Zhiyi seems approachable and calm, but he always feels a bit distant. It's as if he's deliberately keeping a distance from everyone, neither warm nor cold.

Even among the educated youth who came with me, and who I had shared meals and accommodations with for the past few days, the only one I felt familiar with was Gan Tiantian. It was mainly because Gan Tiantian had a kind of clear stupidity that made her feel approachable.

For Gan Tiantian, besides Fang Kai, her favorite person is Xu Zhiyi.
