As soon as I arrived, I found those two old men from yesterday there again.
Today, they saw a completely different reaction from yesterday.
"Little girl, come quick, we've saved you a spot."
"It's the same reef as yesterday."
Xiang Wanwan also greeted them politely.
"Thank you very much, seniors."
She stepped onto the large rock from yesterday, deftly threaded the fishing hook, and then put it into the sea.
The two people next to her were staring intently at her hands.
A few minutes later, the first fish took the bait.
It was a sea bass, not as big as the one from yesterday, but still quite good, weighing a good seven or eight pounds.
"You little girl, you're incredibly lucky! You caught such a big sea bass in just a few minutes."
"We two old folks have been here for ages and all we've caught are two small groupers."
"Indeed, the younger generation surpasses the older one!"
Xiang Wanwan smiled and modestly said, "It's just that I got lucky occasionally."
"I still can't compare to my seniors!"
After yesterday's experience of reeling in the fish, she had completely reconciled with the two fishermen in front of her.
Fishermen always feel a bit envious when they see other people's fish. If they could catch a big fish themselves, they would probably carry it around the whole island to show off.
Just as they were talking, Xiang Wanwan felt her fishing rod move again.
This time it was a bit more intense than before.
The two people next to them stared wide-eyed when they saw this.
"Judging from the curvature of the fishing rod, this one should weigh around ten pounds."
"Little girl, do you need any help?"
Xiang Wanwan repeatedly refused.
"No need, no need! I can handle ten pounds."
She fished for a few minutes, then waited until the fish was exhausted before reeling it in.
Before long, a patterned grouper was pulled out of the water.
"This is a bluestone spore!"
"It must weigh at least ten pounds."
Xiang Wanwan scooped the fish up, and two other anglers came over to pick it up and weigh it in their hands.
They were both envious and delighted. They were envious because the fish weren't biting their hooks, even though they weren't far away and their fishing rods were better.
What's gratifying is that they rarely manage to catch such a big fish. Although they didn't catch it themselves, it's still a delightful sight.
Immediately afterwards, Xiang Wanwan caught more than a dozen rockfish before packing up and going home.
She walked onto the beach and ran into Sister Sun. The two of them went back together.
"Wanwan, you caught so many fish today!"
Xiang Wanwan took a stone nine-tael weighing seven or eight taels from the bucket and put it into Sister Sun's bucket.
"Sister-in-law, take it home and eat it."
Sister-in-law Sun immediately beamed with joy.
"How could I possibly accept this?"
Although she said she was sorry, she still accepted it.
They weren't as capable as Xiang Wanwan, who always managed to have a great harvest whenever she went to the beach.
As they walked, they talked about what had happened to Granny Chen that afternoon.
"Old woman Chen deserves it! We're all family, how could she be so cruel!"
"You left early and didn't see it. Old Mrs. Chen later beat her daughter-in-law until her face was bruised and swollen, and she even bled on the spot."
"You're such a grown woman, how could you not even know you were pregnant? You lost so much blood, I don't know if you could keep the baby?"
Xiang Wanwan was somewhat shocked.
How did this end up resulting in a death?
I'm afraid Granny Chen must be kicking herself now.
Although her daughter-in-law is an outsider, the child in her belly is her own grandson. If she loses the baby, it will be as if she has killed her own grandson with her own hands.
