Chapter 4: Facing reality and finding a place to live

Bai An held his wrist with some hesitation. The familiar silver chain was no longer on his wrist. He didn't know if he could go in now.

Bai An closed her eyes and dared not open them. She was afraid that the result would not be what she wanted, until she heard the familiar sound of flowing water.

“Come in!”

Bai An looked at the pile of things in front of her and felt very excited. Coming to this strange place, these items in front of her gave her the greatest sense of security.

Hungry Bai An found something to fill her stomach, but she was afraid that the child would come back and not see her, so she hurried out before she had time to find a mirror to see what she looked like now.

Bai An came out of the space, wiped the stains on his mouth, and put the steamed buns on the table back on the stove.

But looking at the simple house, Bai An instinctively felt uncomfortable, and moved his little body to clean the house casually.

When Lu Jinan came back, he saw Bai An wiping the chair with a rag.

"You don't have to work now." Lu Jinan took the rag from Bai An's hand, put it on the table, and looked at the steamed buns on the stove.

Lu Jinan was stunned for a moment. She really didn’t like eating this.

...

...

Carefully taking out the warm eggs from his arms, Lu Jinan said to Bai An with a cold face: "I'll boil eggs for you."

"No, I'm not hungry."

Lu Jinan didn't believe that Bai An wouldn't be hungry, "How can you not eat?"

Bai An watched him skillfully beat the eggs, add water, light the stove, and put the bowl in.

When Lu Jinan came over with the bowl on a cloth, Bai An looked at the egg custard in front of her and she really didn't know whether to eat it or not.

After all, in a family like this, this bowl of egg custard should be a rare delicacy.

"This is much more delicious than steamed buns." Lu Jinan had a cold face, but his eyes looked at Bai An expectantly.

"I still don't." Before Bai An could finish his words, Lu Jinan scooped a spoonful of egg custard and fed it into Bai An's mouth.

The steaming egg custard scalded Bai An so much that she started crying, "Hot, hot, hot!"

"Spit it out." Lu Jinan quickly stretched his hand in front of Bai An. The egg custard that was spit on his hand was so hot that he was shaking a little.

Lu Jinan frowned, his young face showing a mature expression. He touched Bai An's chin and said, "Let me see if there's anything wrong with your mouth."

Bai An felt his mouth was in great pain and opened it towards Lu Jinan.

Lu Jinan took a look and found that it was just a little red inside and there were no blisters, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

Lu Jinan scooped up another spoonful of egg custard and blew on it carefully this time. "Eat it. It won't be hot this time."

Bai An, with tears in her eyes, ate a few bites and stopped. Lu Jinan reached out and touched Bai An's belly, which was bulging.

Looking at the remaining egg custard in the bowl, Lu Jinan put it on the table.

"May I have your name?"

"Bai An."

Just when Bai An wanted to ask his name, a gentle voice came from outside the door.

"Hello, I'm back."

Bai An looked in the direction of the voice and saw the girl standing at the door. Her shiny black hair was neatly tied behind her back. She had a smile on her face and her lips were slightly raised. Although she was wearing simple coarse cloth clothes, her appearance reminded Bai An of those Republican-era stars on the Internet.

When Wanqing opened the door, she saw Bai An wearing Jin An's new clothes and sitting obediently on a chair. She walked over with a smile in surprise.

"You're awake. It seems that Jin An likes you very much. He lets you wear his favorite clothes and will take you to find your parents later."

Bai Andun was stunned. He had been without parents since he was a child. How could he find them?

"No, I can go home by myself."

Lu Jinan, who was standing aside, frowned.

Wanqing pinched Bai An's little face and said, "Where is your home then?"

Bai An did not answer this question, but asked: "Then where is this place?"

"Xinghua Village, your home should also be in this village."

Xinghua Village? Bai An shook his head.

"It doesn't matter, we can always find it."

Wanqing waved to Lu Jinan, "Jinan, come here."

"This is my brother. He is already 8 years old. How old are you now?"

Bai An thought for a while, made a number four, waved his hand and made a number five, but waved his hand again and made a number four.

Seeing Bai An's distressed look, Wanqing gently held her hand and said softly, "You probably still can't count, you see."

Wanqing pointed at Lu Jinan and said, "Brother was born in 1960, so it is 1968 now. If we subtract 0 from the last 8, we get 8, so brother is eight years old this year."

A bolt from the blue exploded above Bai An's head.

When Lu Demin heard Wanqing say this, he didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Why are you using this as a math problem for her? This is a bit difficult for her."

"Oh, you can't count yet." Wanqing smiled, "It doesn't matter, you are still young, you will learn it when you grow up."

"1968?" Bai An stretched out her hand. "Now 1968?"

"What's wrong?" Wanqing touched Bai An's head, "Why are you so surprised?"

Wanqing bent down and held Bai An in her arms, and asked Lu Jinan beside her: "Do you want to go out together?"

"I'll just stay at home." Lu Jinan grabbed the corner of his mother's clothes, "Will she come to our house to play again?"

"I like this little sister so much. Once I know where she lives, I can go and play with her."

Lu Jinan's eyes lit up, "Okay."

Muddy dirt roads, small brick houses, and a depressed atmosphere.

Bai An curled up in the woman's warm embrace, thinking about his current situation.

In 1968, in this cold winter, I was still so young. If I didn’t find a family, I might have to stay in space for several months.

But winter is over, how should I deal with it?

"Village chief, we found a lost child last night. Can you tell me whose child is missing?"

The village chief narrowed his eyes and looked at Bai An carefully. "Such a pretty little girl is not from our village."

"May I have your name?"

"Bai An?"

"This is not a child from our village. There is no one with the last name Bai in our village."

Wanqing was a little anxious when she saw the village chief deny it, "Why not? Village chief, please take another look."

"Alas." The village chief shook his head slowly, took out a cloth bag from his trouser pocket, and opened it layer by layer, revealing a few worn cloth coupons inside.

"Every family is so poor nowadays. Looking at the child's appearance, I'm afraid he is from a poor family and has to be thrown away because they can't afford to raise him." The village chief picked up a cloth coupon and said, "Raise him for a few days first, and wait until you can no longer raise him."

"Just put her back where she came from."

"Is that what the village chief really said?" Lu Demin frowned as he looked at Bai An in Wanqing's arms. "If we put her back, she will just be left to die."

Bai An curled his lips, raised his hands to hug Wanqing's neck, and rubbed his delicate face from time to time, "I don't want to go home."

"Why?" Wanqing felt the girl's dependence on her and felt a little upset. "Why don't you want to go home?"

In order to stay, Bai An had to make one up on the spot.

sorry.

"No one in my family likes me. Everyone bullies me. They don't give me food or clothes to wear. They say I'm a jinx and that they just threw me away because they don't want to support me anymore."

Bai An choked up as he spoke about the injustice he had encountered, and even shed a few tears out of context.

All I could hear was the whistling of the wind around me, and other than that there was silence.

"Demin!"
