Chapter 12 Melee
The people from Lijia and Wangjia villages were walking on the road, and the refugees behind them were following not far behind. The weather in June was very hot, and it seemed that people would get sunburned and their skin would peel off. Due to lack of water, everyone's mouth was dry and cracked. Li Zheng was not feeling well either. She had to get up early every day to travel and could not rest until dark. Every part of her body hurt. Baoger was better, but he was not in good spirits due to the sun, and he had not eaten well on the road, so he had been tanned into a small black charcoal. She was not much better either.
The further you go, the more desolate it becomes. The trees are bare without a trace of green, and even the bark has been stripped away.
It was not until dark that they found a place to rest. Li Zheng sat down with a thud, feeling so tired.
"Sister, drink some water." Baoger brought a water bag to Li Zheng, thinking that he was too small to help his sister, so useless.
Li Zheng took it and gulped it down. Only then did she feel better. She touched Bao Ge'er's head and said, "Drink some too, Bao Ge'er."
Bao Ge'er shook his head, "Bao Ge'er is not thirsty."
"Okay, Bao Ge'er, take it and drink it yourself when you are thirsty."
"Um."
Li Zheng looked back at the refugees staring at her water bag, feeling a little uncomfortable. She could not help much by herself, and if a hole was opened, she would not be able to defend it.
Li Zheng took Bao Ge'er to the village chief and asked, "Village chief, what are our plans for tonight?"
"Zheng girl, tell me, do you have any ideas?" The village chief saw that it was Li Zheng. These days, this girl is more capable and smarter than some men. She must have something to ask her when she came to him.
"Well, Village Chief, I'm just wondering if we should arrange for people to take turns on night watch? Before, our two villages knew each other well, so it was no big deal. But now we have those refugees around us, and we've been hungry for several days. I'm worried that if no one is watching at night, our food supply will be in jeopardy."
"Zheng girl is right, Dad, I will call some young men to take turns to guard at night. It's okay to ask for food, but if you accidentally hurt someone, you will have nowhere to cry." Li Sihai, the fourth son of the village chief, used to be an accountant in the town, so he knows these things. Moreover, he has been helping to take care of things along the way these days. After all, the village chief is old and on the road, his body can't bear it and his energy is not enough.
"Not only do we need to find people to take turns guarding the place, but we also need to organize people to look around to see if there's any water or wild fruits. We can't just sit there and eat all the food we have."
"Uncle Sihai is right." Li Zheng agreed very much. After all, these things were beyond her imagination.
"Okay, Sihai. You go and organize people to keep watch and take a look around. I'll go tell the village chief of Wangjia Village." After the village chief said this, he went to where Wangjia Village was.
"Zheng girl, when you rest at night, stay inside and don't stay outside. Okay, your uncle Sihai is going to be busy, so go back and rest."
"Oh." Li Zheng thought that there were indeed more good people.
The night passed peacefully.
When traveling the next day, Li Zheng clearly felt that this group of refugees was a little restless, but they looked no different from yesterday. She thought that it might be because she had been a little impatient recently.
This day was also a peaceful day.
On the third day, Li Zheng was still feeling uneasy as she left again, but nothing was wrong, which made her a little impatient. After dark, Li Zheng ran to the village chief and told him that she felt something was wrong.
"Zheng girl, what's wrong with this?" The village chief was a little confused.
"Village chief, I don't know either. I just feel that something might happen, but I can't put my finger on it." She was also annoyed and anxious.
Li Sihai pondered for a moment and said, "How about this, Zheng girl, I'll tell them to keep watch tonight and be alert."
"Okay, Uncle Sihai, thank you for your help." She herself didn't know what to do. When she went back, Li Zheng glanced in the direction of the refugees. Something was wrong. Why were there fewer people?
Li Zheng instantly broke out in a cold sweat and glanced at the refugees around him. They were now surrounded! Although they weren't conspicuous, just groups of two or three, one might think they were just familiar people hanging out together. But a closer look revealed that only people from Wang and Li villages were in the inner circle, while the outer circle was full of refugees!
Li Zheng turned around and quickly told the village chief about her discovery. The village chief broke out in a cold sweat as soon as he saw it. "Zheng girl, quickly tell the villagers quietly that we should leave quickly before the refugees find out."
"Oh." I just hope these refugees don't take action tonight, otherwise no one will be able to leave tonight.
"Uncle Li, village..." I heard it before the words were finished.
"Hey, what are you doing?" It was from Li Cuihua's house, which was close to the refugees. Before she could finish her words, the refugees started to grab food. Li Zheng looked around again and saw that the refugees stood up one by one and gathered here.
He shouted, "They are going to steal the food, everyone hurry up and pick up your weapons!" This sentence reached everyone's ears and instantly caused an uproar. Not only did the refugees come over faster to steal the food, but the villagers also reacted. In the night, the sounds of fighting and killing instantly emerged.
Li Zheng quickly ran to Bao Ge'er's side and saw some unshaven refugees grabbing Bao Ge'er and snatching food. "Let me go, let me go! That's our food, not yours." This seemed to anger him, and he raised his hand and slapped Bao Ge'er in the face. "Fuck, is it yours or mine? You have so much food, why don't you share some with us? Whoever grabs it now gets it!"
Seeing this scene hurt her eyes deeply. Her beloved brother was beaten by others. She stepped forward and kicked him in the chest.
The man just lay on the ground and vomited blood with a "wow".
"Is Baoge'er okay, huh?" Li Zheng was worried. "Sister, Baoge'er is okay." Li Zheng looked at him once before finally feeling relieved. "Baoge'er, go hide in the tree for a while. I have to help the villagers." Without waiting for Baoge'er to answer, she carried him up the tree.
Li Zheng walked forward with a torch and saw Sister Lian lying on the ground with an injured arm. The man did not let her go and tried to kill her with a stone. Li Zheng went up and kicked her out again.
"Sister Lian, are you okay?" Sister Lian didn't care about being surprised and said quickly, "I'm fine."
When Li Zheng heard the word "it's okay", she grabbed a handful of stones from the side and threw them at the refugees who were hurting people. When the refugees saw the sudden pain in their bodies and saw that there was a bloody hole, they were frightened and panicked, which gave the villagers a chance to catch their breath.
"Ah!" It turned out that the refugees, knowing they couldn't win, had also picked up stones, and unfortunately, the Wangjia Village people lying on the ground were hit on the head. The refugees were even more excited when they heard this, and they smashed with all their might. Li Zheng saw that it was no use, so she picked up a long stick and hit the refugees with it. With screams, the refugees fled in all directions.
