Chapter 2 Gold Finger
Li Zheng sat in front of the yard gate, looking at the clothes, bed sheets, quilt covers and mattresses hanging out to dry in the yard, and sighed again.
"well"
Li Zheng turned her head and looked at Baoger beside her, who was imitating her sighing, and asked with a smile, "Why are you sighing?" Baoger looked at Li Zheng with a silly smile on his face.
Li Zheng didn't expect Bao Ge'er to say anything. She was thinking to herself: When she'd just cleaned the house, she'd searched every nook and cranny, even rat holes, and only found a little over three taels of silver. Three taels of silver should last almost a year in the village. A frugal person could spend the entire year, or even more than a year. Besides, every family in the village had land, so they didn't need to buy food. Silver only bought oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and cloth. Hardworking families didn't need to buy food; they made it at home. In other words, unless we were sick, we didn't have to spend much. But we couldn't. We didn't have land, which meant we didn't produce any food. So we had to buy it. Right now, the cheapest black flour is three wen per jin (approximately 100g), white flour is more expensive at eight wen per jin (approximately 100g), brown rice is sixteen wen per jin (approximately 100g), and polished rice is twenty-five wen per jin (approximately 250g). Because we're in the north, rice can't be grown, so it's even more expensive. Black flour is definitely not an option. Bao Ge'er is still young and needs to eat better. If he only eats white flour, he can only eat it for three months at most. This is just for food, but what about oil, salt, sauce and vinegar?
Alas, thinking of her past life as a small clerk in a company, only able to manage her own food and drink, with no special skills, not a science student, unable to make soap, glass, or even lipstick or skin care products, and only able to make some home cooking, she was going to set up a stall? But this body was only 12 years old, with a 2-year-old brother. Setting up a stall would obviously make others bully her, wouldn't it?
Right! Isn't there a standard space for time travel? But I don't have the ancestral jade pendant. What should I do? Can I just shout? Open Sesame, go in, I want to go in.
The next moment, Li Zheng arrived at a vast expanse of white, wondering, "Did I really get in?" She quickly observed the area. In the center of this space stood a two-story attic. To its right was a small spring, surrounded by a ring of land, approximately two acres. Li Zheng surveyed the attic and realized that the only way to understand what was going on was to go inside. Upon entering, she immediately noticed a booklet on the table in front of her. She picked it up and began to read. It contained only a brief introduction to the space, including its contents and instructions for use. It didn't explain how it came to her or who its previous owner was. Seeing the last page read, "For those destined to receive it," Li Zheng relaxed. It seemed this space was now hers. After reading this, she stopped reading and silently muttered, "Get out!"
When Li Zheng just went out, she heard Bao Ge'er's heart-wrenching cry. Li Zheng quickly hugged Bao Ge'er and kept saying, "Be good, don't cry, don't cry, sister is here."
When Baoger saw Li Zheng, he grabbed her tightly and refused to let go, but he was still crying and hiccuping, saying, "No, I won't leave."
Li Zheng felt her nose sore instantly, and she hugged Bao Ge'er tightly and said, "No, how could I bear to leave such a lovely Bao Ge'er?"
After a while, Bao Ge'er's crying gradually stopped. He buried himself in Li Zheng's arms, embarrassed, and didn't dare to come out. Li Zheng patted Bao Ge'er's little butt with a smile and said, "Now you know you're embarrassed. Come on, sister will take you to make something delicious."
"Yeah." After hearing that she was going to make something delicious, Baoger was willing to come out of her arms, and smiled at Li Zheng embarrassedly.
"Come on, sister, let's go to the vegetable garden together to pick vegetables, okay?" Li Zheng took Baoger's hand and walked towards the vegetable garden.
"Yeah, picking vegetables."
Li Zheng picked some greens and took them to the kitchen, washing them and setting them aside. She scooped some flour into a bowl, kneaded it into dough, and let it rise. She then took some pickled mustard greens from the pickle jar behind the door, rinsed them with water to remove the saltiness, chopped them up, and wrapped them in dough to make preserved vegetable pancakes. She added a few drops of oil to grease the bottom of a wok, then placed the pancakes in the wok and seared them until cooked. She then placed them on a plate. She also took an egg from the kitchen basket and steamed it into an egg custard. She added some salt and a few drops of oil, and made a bowl of spinach soup. Dinner was ready.
Li Zheng was about to turn around and call Bao Ge'er to eat when she saw Bao Ge'er staring at the egg custard with his mouth watering. Li Zheng looked at him with amusement and said, "Bao Ge'er, wash your hands and you can eat now."
"Yeah." Bao Ge'er quickly washed his hands and leaned over the table to look.
Li Zheng held Bao Ge'er on a stool, pushed the egg custard in front of Bao Ge'er and said, "Eat it."
Bao Ge'er looked at the uneaten egg custard and said, "Sister, eat it too."
"Sister, eat the cake."
"No, sister eats it." Baoger pouted, very stubborn.
"Okay, sister, eat it." Li Zheng took a spoon and scooped a spoonful into her mouth. "Okay, sister has eaten it, you should eat it quickly too."
"Yeah." Baoger made sure that Li Zheng had eaten before he started eating.
Li Zheng was eating preserved vegetable pancakes and drinking vegetable soup. She thought that maybe she was used to eating dishes with various seasonings, so now this kind of food was a bit too light for her. Forget it, she didn't have the conditions now, so she just regarded it as a way to maintain her health.
After finishing the meal, Li Zheng looked at Bao Ge'er's shaking head, so she picked him up and said to him, "Let's go take a nap."
"Yeah." Before he finished speaking, he leaned into Li Zheng's arms.
Li Zheng put Baoger on the bed and covered him with a quilt. Seeing that Baoger was still holding onto her clothes, she held his hand and lay down beside him. "Go to sleep. Sister will sleep with you."
Li Zheng looked at Baoger's little face and thought that he was probably frightened at noon.
Looking at Baoger's sleeping face, he let go of Baoger's hand and said to himself: Go in.
Li Zheng entered the space and went straight to the attic. On the left side of the attic were rows of grids, filled with various medicinal herbs and seeds. The land around the spring was used to grow medicinal herbs, so they would mature quickly. On the right side of the attic were some medicinal prescriptions, but the largest collection was martial arts manuals. The second floor of the attic consisted of only a small room, and the rest of the space was filled with weapons: swords, knives, guns, meteor hammers, and so on.
The flow of space is three times slower than the outside world, and time stands still elsewhere, otherwise these weapons wouldn't be preserved so well. Seeing these martial arts secrets, Li Zheng felt a strong urge to learn them as soon as possible. Although she didn't know why, she decided to follow her heart. After all, learning more would increase her survival skills and self-protection abilities.
