Early the next morning, Wu came to her youngest son's house and pulled Li Yan out of bed: "Didn't I tell you yesterday that we were going to the kangfang today?"
Li Yan was pulled out of bed by her grandmother in a daze. She quickly packed herself up, picked up a steamed bun from the kitchen, and left the house with Wu.
Sunjiakangfang was about an hour's journey from Lijia Village. Li Yan ate the steamed bun in her hand and asked, "Grandma, we didn't take anything. How are we going to bring the chicken back later?"
Mrs. Wu: "Don't worry about that. If you buy more than 20 chicks from that shop, they'll deliver them on a bullock cart!"
This is great, it saves me a lot of trouble!
It took the grandfather and grandson an hour to arrive at the door of Sun's kangfang.
Li Yan could hear the chirping of chickens in the house from outside the door, it was so lively.
Wu called out from outside the door, and a spirited old woman came out of the house. Seeing Wu, she immediately stepped forward to greet her, saying, "Old sister, you're finally here! If you hadn't come, I would have sold this chicken!"
Mrs. Wu: "Then keep it for me, okay? I've been engaged to you for a long time, right? You can't let me come here for nothing!"
The old woman hurriedly explained: "I haven't sold it yet, I haven't sold it yet. I'm keeping it for you. Come with me back to the house and pick it out!"
As he said this, he took Wu's arm and went into the house.
As soon as Li Yan entered the house, a wave of heat hit her face. On the wooden shelves in the room were stacked eggs waiting to be hatched. The further she walked in, the more Li Yan saw chicks in the trough. The chicks were born only a few days ago and were bright yellow and very cute.
Amidst the noise, the three of them came to the chickens that had been raised for several days.
Granny Sun said to Mrs. Wu, "These are the only chickens left. Do you want them all?"
Mrs. Wu looked at her granddaughter and asked, "How much do you want to take back?"
Li Yan looked at the fifty or sixty chickens in front of her and said to Wu, "I want them all!"
Mrs. Wu: "Where are you going to keep it when you take it back? Isn't the house down the mountain still in good shape?"
"Grandma, I'll just put these chickens in my backyard. The house at the foot of the barren mountain has been built. I'll buy some daily necessities and we can start using them there!"
After hearing her granddaughter's words, Mrs. Wu said to Grandma Sun, "Sister, you heard it too. We want all these chicks. How much is this one?"
After hearing this, Grandma Sun said happily, "Old sister, I don't want to ask you for more. Just the same price as I sold them. Five coins each. There are sixty-two of them here. Just give me three hundred coins!"
Mrs. Wu felt that five cents a piece was too expensive, so she said, "Sister, I'm buying these at once, so you can give me four cents a piece. I'll buy more later."
Grandma Sun patted Wu's arm and said, "Old sister, I've been raising this chick for nearly a month. I really can't offer you any lower prices. How about I give you five newborn chicks?"
Wu argued with Mrs. Sun for a while, and finally bought the sixty-two chicks for three hundred coins.
But the matter was settled only after Mrs. Sun gave her seven newborn chicks.
Li Yan paid for the chickens and led her granddaughter out of the yard. Wu urged, "Sister, please remember to help me send the chickens back to Li Village!"
Grandma Sun patted her chest and assured: "Don't worry, sister, I will send the chicken back to you in the ox cart this afternoon!"
Only then did Mrs. Wu take Li Yan back home.
