Chapter 139 Persuasion

When Lin returned home, Li Yan asked, "Have my aunt and the others returned yet?"

Lin: "Your aunt couldn't stay outside. She wanted to go back when you were cooking, but I stopped her!"

Li Yan: "Mom, I want to ask Uncle Youcai to help make some furniture. We bought the chicken, but the house down the mountain doesn't have any furniture yet!"

Lin: "Then go ahead. Don't ask for too much. Just get something close enough."

Li Yan nodded in agreement.

When Li Yan knocked on Li Youcai's door again, Aunt Zhao greeted her with a smile as soon as she saw her. "Er Ya, you're here. Come in quickly. Have you had dinner?"

Li Yan followed Aunt Zhao into the yard: "Aunt, I've eaten. Is Uncle home? I want him to make some more furniture for my house!"

Aunt Zhao smiled even brighter when she heard this: "Yes, it's in the tool shed. I'll take you there!"

She knew that after Li Erlang's house at the foot of the mountain was built, he would have to ask his own man to make furniture. Look, this man came to her door!

Aunt Zhao led Li Yan to find her husband. Li Yan stood outside the door and greeted Li Youcai: "Uncle, do you have time to help me make some furniture?"

Li Youcai dropped his work and asked, "Well, what are we going to fight this time?"

"Uncle, first make me two wooden tables, four long benches, four small stools, and two beds. No need to carve or paint them, nothing fancy, just anything close will do. I'm going to put them in the new house."

Li Youcai nodded and indicated that he would take note of it.

Li Yan asked again: "Uncle, how much does it cost to make these? How long will it take to make them?"

Li Youcai said, "Since you've said so, there's no need to ask any more questions. Just give me one ounce and five cents of silver for these. I'll make them for you today!"

After hearing this, Li Yan quickly thanked him, paid the deposit and returned home.

Lin: "You're back so soon? Your uncle isn't home?"

Li Yan: "Uncle is at home, everything has been ordered, two beds, benches, tables and chairs have all been custom-made, and the total cost is only one tael and five cents!"

"It's settled. Go help your aunt clean up the backyard!"

Li Yan came to the backyard and saw Li Xiaomei busy expanding the chicken coop.

There was originally only a small chicken coop in the backyard, and now that these chicks were brought back, the coop seems a bit crowded.

Li Xiaomei used the leftover bricks from building the house last time to start expanding the chicken coop. Li Yan hurried forward to help. The aunt and niece divided the work and worked together. It took them more than half an hour to build the chicken coop. Li Xiaomei also brought a pile of hay to spread in the chicken coop.

After the two of them finished their work, Li Yan returned to her room and lay on the bed thinking about her next plan.

The house at the foot of the barren mountain has been built. Today, I asked Uncle Youcai to make the furniture. All that’s left is to add some daily necessities.

Li Yan wanted to plant forsythia on her family's allotment of land, as well as the twenty-plus acres of wasteland at the foot of the barren mountain. But she feared Mr. Li wouldn't agree so easily. Forsythia isn't a grain, and growing it doesn't immediately bring economic benefits to the family. Convincing Mr. Li, who relies on the land for his livelihood, wouldn't be easy.

In fact, Li Yan not only plans to grow Forsythia suspensa at home, she also hopes to lead the entire village to grow this medicinal herb.

Such high value-added medicinal materials obviously bring more substantial profits than growing crops.

It is obviously a very challenging task to ask villagers to use their own land for survival to grow Forsythia which cannot fill their stomachs.

Li Yan was thinking about a solution in her mind. How could she get her father and Mr. Li to agree to plant Forsythia?
