Chapter 39: Work Begins

Since the situation has been basically determined, two more guest rooms will be built on the west side of the existing two main houses.

The wing room is connected to the main house. One of the two wing rooms on the right side is used as a kitchen, and the other is used as a toilet and shower. This is the area that Li Yan is thinking about improving.

The front door and backyard must be built with adobe bricks, which not only blocks other people's sight but also ensures safety.

The next day, Li Yan got up early. Starting today, the people she had hired to help her would have to eat at home, so she had to go to town to buy some food.

Li Yan first took a ox cart to the town, and then went straight to the pork shop after entering the city.

Zhu the butcher's business didn't seem very good today, and there was still a lot of meat on the butcher's counter. Seeing Li Yan coming, he hurriedly greeted her, "Miss, would you like to buy some meat? This pig was just slaughtered this morning, and the meat is very fresh."

Li Yan nodded: "Please give me five pounds of pork belly."

Butcher Zhu cut the meat with a quick knife and placed it on the scale, with the scale bar tilted high.

Butcher Zhu said, "Don't worry, girls, when you buy meat from me, I won't shortchange you on weight."

Li Yan looked at the ribs on the butcher's counter again and asked, "How much is a pound of ribs?"

"This big piece is ten cents a pound, it's worth buying it!" How much does the girl want?

Li Yan ordered another five pounds of pork ribs and paid a total of 125 coins.

Before leaving, Zhu the butcher put two big bones into Li Yan's basket: "Take them back and make soup! Come back to support my business next time!" Li Yan smiled and nodded in agreement.

After buying the vegetables here, Li Yan immediately rushed back.

I felt that taking the ox cart was too slow, so I chose to take a boat back, but this time I didn’t meet Zhou Lao Di at the dock.

When we got home, everyone was already busy, some were digging for jobs, and some were making bricks.

Li Yan took all the food she bought to her uncle's house. Since the new house has not been built yet, she had to borrow it temporarily.

Seeing Li Yan buy all this meat, Wu couldn't help but feel distressed. She silently thought that this girl didn't know how to live.

Li Yan asked Wu for some radishes, cabbages, and eggs to make a pork stew with cabbage, scrambled eggs with green onions, and a radish and pork ribs soup.

Mrs. Wu rolled her eyes at Li Yan and said, "Not only did you buy the meat, you also wanted to make my eggs."

Wu asked Li Yan to light the fire, while she went to the stove to work.

Two pounds of pork belly were cut and then sautéed in a large pot of oil, the excess being drained off in a bowl. A rich aroma filled the air as Wu picked up the greasy residue and fed it to her grandson, who had been lingering around her, coaxing him aside.

The pork belly was simmered for half an hour, and then the cabbage was added and simmered together. In another pot, steamed flatbreads were started. When everything was ready, Mrs. Wu asked Li Yan to call everyone over for dinner.

Everyone had been busy all morning and was already starving.

While working, I could smell the aroma of food, and my appetite had already been aroused.

We only have two meals a day at home, mostly some coarse grains with some pickles. It seems like the last time we ate meat was a long time ago!

Li Erlang led everyone to wash their hands and faces, and spent half a day rubbing mud. Everyone was covered in dust.

After cleaning up, the few people came to the dining table, which was already filled with pork stewed with cabbage, stir-fried beans, radish and pork ribs soup, and white flour pancakes.

Old man Li greeted everyone: "Thanks to everyone today, eat while it's hot."

They were indeed hungry, so they stopped being polite and picked up their chopsticks, gobbling up the food in no time, leaving not even a sip of soup.
