Chapter 15 All the refugees entering the city were arrested

"How dare you! How dare you!" The woman in the carriage said in a terrified voice. The scholar rushed in and pulled the refugees out.

But two fists cannot beat four hands, so the scholar finally got mad and drew out his sword and chopped randomly!

"Oh, my hand!" The refugees were afraid of being scratched and did not dare to move forward, except for the refugee who tried to get into the carriage and had his hand cut!

"Murder! Murder!" The refugees screamed madly with blood flowing from their wounds, trying to get more compensation.

The scholar, his eyes bloodshot, held a sword in his hand. He pointed the tip of the sword at the refugees in front of him and whispered to the woman in the carriage, "Madam, are you okay?"

"Brother, I'm fine." The woman's voice was obviously trembling, and the scholar stared fiercely at the refugees who were still trying to rush over.

The refugees were afraid of death. The refugee whose hand was cut saw that the scholar had no intention of compensating. He looked at them with resentment and said, "Don't be afraid, everyone. There's only a delicate woman in there, and a big box. There must be something good hidden in it! Let's all go together!"

"Let's see who dares!" The scholar placed his sword across the neck of the shouting refugee and threatened, "Whoever dares to take another step forward will be killed!"

These refugees looked at the carriage unwillingly. Some of them wanted to take the opportunity to attack the horse, but were thrown away by the horse.

The situation was at a stalemate. The scholar finally cracked the whip hard and the carriage sped away.

Xu Ning thought that the scholar might not dare to stop for the rest of the journey.

"Daya, Dabao, and Xiaobao, you must remember to hide your delicious food so no one can see you. Also, don't be kind. These people won't be grateful. If you let them get even a little bit of food, they'll immediately take everything away from you! Got it?!"

Old Mrs. Xu quietly educated the three children, telling them what the consequences would be if they showed kindness at this time.

Xu Ning didn't say anything, but Xu Dabao and Xu Xiaobao were frightened by the scholar swinging his sword, and their faces were very pale.

"Grandma, Dabao will protect you from now on!" Xu Dabao touched his wooden dagger and made up his mind secretly.

"Be good, Dabao. Don't trust any strangers while you are fleeing from famine, okay?" Old Mrs. Xu's heart was in a knot. She was afraid that if they were separated one day, the children at home would not be able to survive.

"Got it, grandma! Xiaobao will also protect you!" Xu Xiaobao raised his little fist!

"Xiaobao is also a good boy!" Old Mrs. Xu touched Xu Xiaobao's head lovingly, and her worry grew even heavier.

Xu Da and Li Liehu looked at each other and realized something was wrong.

For the rest of the journey, Old Mrs. Xu was very careful even when cooking wild vegetables, and she didn't dare to take out any dried meat at all.

Even so, the refugees still came forward without giving up, but were finally scared away by Li the Hunter's arrows.

"Auntie, we are only one day away from Yuncheng!" The weather has been unbearably hot these days, and there are more and more refugees. The two families are worried about getting heatstroke, so they changed their schedule to rest during the day and travel at night.

The weather was cooler at night, and with Xu Ning's infrared telescope, Li the Hunter easily dealt with several groups of refugees who wanted to steal things.

However, eating wild vegetables continuously made both adults and children look pale. Old Mrs. Xu was afraid that the smell would attract refugees, so she didn't dare to cook a piece of dried meat. Only when they were very hungry did she take out a small piece and let the adults and children put it in their mouths.

Finally, on the next morning, the group arrived near the gate of Yuncheng.

Xu Ning stared at the city gate in a daze. This was the first time she saw the buildings of the Daqing Dynasty.

The city gate is very high, with buildings such as watchtowers and gatehouses built on it. There is a soldier standing guard every ten steps on the city wall.

This scene is somewhat similar to what we see in movies and TV series. The only difference is that these soldiers are not tall and mighty, and their clothes are patched.

Xu Ning turned his gaze towards the gate. The soldiers guarding the gate were taller than those on the city wall. They had serious faces and held weapons as they checked the refugees who wanted to enter the city one by one.

Li the Hunter discovered that there were many more soldiers at the city gate, which was obviously abnormal. In addition, there were more and more refugees along the way, so he was not confident in bringing a group of people directly into the city.

I don’t know what the situation is in the city, but judging from the current situation, it’s probably not good.

Finally, after discussion, the Xu family and Feng's mother and son stayed where they were, and Li the hunter went into the city to gather information and exchange the skins and ginseng.

"Brother Xu, I'll take a look around the city first. If I don't come out within an hour, please take my wife and children and hide in the mountains! Remember the signs I taught you last time. I'll come find you as soon as I can escape!"

Xu Da advised Li the hunter not to go into the city, as they still had food and could take a detour.

But Li the Hunter had to enter the city this time because Feng's family had been separated from them before fleeing the famine. They had agreed that if they were separated on the way, they would wait for each other in Yuncheng.

"Be careful! We'll wait for you to come back!" Xu Da patted Li the Hunter on the shoulder. Li the Hunter turned his gaze to Feng, who nodded at him with a pale face.

"Don't worry, I'll be back soon!" Li the hunter looked solemn. He put on his backpack and walked quickly towards the city.

After Li the Hunter entered the city, Xu Da stood in front of the cart.

Xu Da's palms were sweaty as he held the bow and arrow. There were many refugees wandering around, and their eyes were constantly fixed on the cart coming from the Xu family.

Xu Ning and his children didn't dare to get off the cart, and Feng just held the child in her arms without saying a word.

Old Man Xu leaned against the quilt at the back of the cart, closed his eyes and pretended to rest. Old Lady Xu and Zhang also sat close to the cart.

The sun gradually rose higher and the temperature around began to get hotter.

More and more refugees lined up at the city gate to enter the city. Xu Da was anxious and paced back and forth, his eyes fixed on the city gate.

Perhaps Xu Da's expression was too frightening, and some refugees who tried to approach the Xu family turned around and walked away after taking a few steps and seeing Xu Da's stern face.
