Chapter 318: Crossing the Lake by Boat

When the pig-killing dish was about to be served, Butcher Zhang hurried back and handed Xu Ning a brand new machete with a smile on his face.

This scimitar is quite similar to the one he usually uses, but it is slightly smaller and looks more exquisite and unique.

"Boy, this knife will be enough for you to use for several years! Come and try it out to see if it fits your hand?" Butcher Zhang said generously.

Xu Ning happily took the scimitar and began practicing with it. She was pleasantly surprised to find that her palm was just enough to hold the handle steadily.

"It fits perfectly! It's perfect! Thank you, Master Zhang!" Xu Ning couldn't help but be delighted and couldn't let go of this small and exquisite scimitar.

At this time, Mr. and Mrs. Wang had already brought the food to the table.

"My dear, we have packed the food you are going to take away into the backpack." Mrs. Wang smiled.

"That's great, thank you so much, sister-in-law!" Xu Ning expressed her gratitude sincerely. During these two short days together, she deeply felt the warmth and kindness shown by these strangers.

Xu Ning didn't have much else to give in return, but he had plenty of points.

So, she quietly exchanged some gold and silver and hid them in the space, intending to secretly leave them to them when she left in the afternoon.

"Young master, please take a seat!" Old Wang was still as enthusiastic as ever, while Xu Ning looked at the table full of pig-killing dishes that he had made himself, his heart filled with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Soon, after having a good meal and a drink, Xu Ning prepared to leave with his backpack on his back.

Xu Ning refused the farewell offers from Zhang the Butcher and his neighbor Old Wang, waved goodbye, and walked quickly out of the city.

Xu Ning covered the cooked food in the backpack with the cloth, put some of it into the space, and left some to eat on the boat.

In order to save time, Xu Ning did not stop. When she arrived at the ferry, she found a boat operated by a couple and successfully negotiated the fare and other related matters with them.

Then, the small boat slowly sailed away from the shore and headed towards the distance.

Just as Xu Ning was taking a short rest in the cabin, he suddenly heard the boatman call out, "Young Master, look over there on the shore. Are there any people you know? They seem to be waving at you!"

Xu Ning's heart tightened when he heard this, and he quickly leaned out to look outside.

Sure enough, standing on the distant shore were Butcher Zhang and his neighbor Old Wang, both looking anxious.

It seems that they have discovered the money she left for them.

Xu Ning had no choice but to wave to them again as a final farewell.

As the boat sailed further and further away, Xu Ning's figure gradually became blurred, until he completely disappeared from the sight of Butcher Zhang and his neighbor, Old Wang...

Half an hour later, Xu Ning leaned against the cabin, his eyelids felt as heavy as if they weighed a thousand pounds, and his body involuntarily tilted to one side.

By this time, the boat had already left the shore and was drifting further and further away. All around was silence, with only the monotonous and rhythmic sound of the oars, like a lullaby, constantly assaulting her eardrums.

Despite being so sleepy, Xu Ning always remained alert and did not dare to relax completely.

Xu Ning knew very well that any negligence on this vast lake could bring unexpected danger.

In order to dispel her sleepiness and stay awake, she reached into her backpack and took out the food she had prepared earlier.

In addition to the braised pork offal brought from Lao Wang's house, there was also a small bag of preserved plums that she specially put in there.

Xu Ning picked up a dried sour plum and put it into his mouth, chewing it gently.

The strong sour taste instantly stimulated her taste buds, perking her up, and her originally confused mind gradually became clear.

After swallowing the dried sour plums, Xu Ning calmed himself down and turned to ask the treasure chest: "Bao, where is the boat now?"

Looking at the boundless expanse of Taihu Lake before him, Xu Ning couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "This Taihu Lake is truly enormous! I've only seen its full view on maps and drones before, and didn't think much of it. Now that I'm on the boat myself, I can truly appreciate its vastness. I'm almost dizzy from the shaking..."

After a moment, the voice of the treasure chest sounded: "Player, based on the current sailing progress of the ship, it has only traveled less than one-fifth of the total distance."

Hearing this, Xu Ning felt a little more at ease. This speed was almost the same as what the boatman had said before. As long as nothing unexpected happened, they should be able to reach the other side before dark.

Thinking of this, her tense nerves finally relaxed a little.

"Bao, if I accidentally fall asleep later, no matter what happens, you must remember to wake me up!" Xu Ning instructed the treasure chest.

Although Butcher Zhang and Old Wang appear to be kindhearted and upright people, this does not mean that everyone they meet will be so friendly.

The human heart is unpredictable. Who can truly see the good and evil deep in another person's heart?

Therefore, Xu Ning always holds a sense of awe towards something as complex and elusive as human nature, and never dares to take it lightly or test or provoke it at will.

However, sometimes, no matter how careful you are, human instinct will involuntarily take over.

Just like now, this small boat swayed gently with the waves, like a cradle; coupled with the surrounding silence, without a single sound to disturb, this peaceful and tranquil atmosphere was so intoxicating that it made one feel tired again. Xu Ning was still chewing, but his eyelids became heavier and heavier...

"Are you asleep?"

After a while, the boatman's deep voice sounded.

On the other side of the boat, the woman lifted the curtain, went in to check, and nodded to the boatman.
