Chapter 62 Ugly is Rare
Liu Ye and Zhang Fang had just come out of the kitchen when Bai Zilin also came out of the house. He was also stunned by Zhang Fang's appearance. Good heavens, it must have been broad daylight, otherwise he would have thought he had encountered a female ghost. How could this woman be so ugly!
When Zhang Fang saw the handsome Bai Zilin, her eyes lit up with excitement, and she was overjoyed. Ever since she last met him, she had fallen in love with him at first sight and missed him day and night, but she had never been able to find an opportunity to get close to him. She never expected that the opportunity would come today, and she was so happy.
Just as Liu Ye noticed Zhang Fang acting strangely, she saw Zhang Fang walk towards Bai Zilin. She frowned unhappily. What did Zhang Fang mean? Did she have a crush on Brother Bai? Good heavens, it seems she brought the man who was trying to steal her husband home with her!
Zhang Fang blushed as she walked up to Bai Zilin: "Oh...what a coincidence, Brother Bai...Brother Bai is here too."
Bai Zilin looked at Liu Ye in confusion, thinking, "Who is this ugly guy? He's incredibly ugly!" He had never seen anyone so ugly before. It's true what they say, "There are all kinds of ugly people in a big forest."
"Liu Ye, who is this young lady?"
Before Liu Ye could even open her mouth, Zhang Fang interrupted, "Brother Bai, my name is Zhang Fang, you can just call me Fang'er. My home is next to the big locust tree in the village. My older brother's name is Zhang Qiang. He also likes to go hunting in the mountains, but he's not as good as Brother Bai. He can only hunt pheasants and rabbits, he's never even caught a wild boar. You can come visit my older brother when you have time. I don't go to the market to sell pickled vegetables, I stay home every day, you can come visit me too..."
Liu Ye rolled her eyes unhappily, thinking to herself, "Fuck you! If I had known you were this kind of person, I wouldn't have bought your pickled vegetables. What a load of rubbish!"
Bai Zilin nodded with an awkward smile, then turned and went back into the house. Good heavens! How terrifying! I hope he won't have nightmares tonight!
Zhang Fang was about to follow Liu Ye into the house when Liu Ye grabbed her arm and said, "Zhang Fang, let me see you out!"
Zhang Fang reluctantly withdrew her foot, but showed no intention of leaving. She smiled at Liu Ye and said, "Actually, I don't have anything to do at home. I'll stay with you for a while longer. By the way, what are you buying the sauce for? I'm a pretty good cook, I'll cook for you."
Liu Ye thought to herself, "I can do whatever I want, what's it to you? If you don't leave, I have plenty of ways to make you leave: 'I'm really sorry, Zhang Fang, you have time, but I don't have time to keep you company. I have a ton of work to do at home. Why don't you come another day? I'll see you off...'"
After Liu Ye finished speaking, she turned and walked towards the front door. Zhang Fang looked back at the house unwillingly. She realized that Liu Ye was telling her to come back tomorrow. She followed Liu Ye to the front door and said, "Liu Ye, you can go back now. I'll come to visit you again tomorrow."
Liu Ye nodded with a fake smile and said, "Oh." Zhang Fang then walked away, looking back every few steps.
When Liu Ye returned to the house, Bai Zilin asked curiously, "How do you know her?"
Liu Ye shrugged speechlessly and said, "I met her when I went to the village to buy soy sauce. She said she had soy sauce and pickled vegetables, so I bought some from her. I bought a jar of pickled vegetables, but I couldn't carry the bowl of soy sauce, so she brought it back for me. And that's how she took a liking to you. I have to say, Zhang Fang is ugly, but she has such a beautiful dream!"
Bai Zilin laughed and said, "That's right, I feel the same way. Um, um, is the stuff you bought from her edible? I think you should just throw it away. With her appearance, I can't stomach it..."
Liu Ye didn't want to eat anymore either; she had just been disgusted by Zhang Fang: "If you don't want to eat, then don't. Anyway, I didn't buy much. I'll just secretly throw it away."
Bai Zilin thought it was such a waste: "Don't throw it away! I'll take it to Liu the bricklayer and the others. They only eat coarse grain cakes for lunch, and they don't even have pickled vegetables. It'll be perfect for them."
Liu Ye agreed, thinking it would be a waste to throw it away. She had spent over 100 coins on these pickled vegetables, which was not cheap at all: "Okay, then you can take them over to them. Even without sauce, we can still have braised noodles. I'll go to the kitchen to cook."
Bai Zilin followed Liu Ye into the kitchen, carrying a jar of pickled vegetables in one hand and a bowl of sauce in the other, before heading to his neighbor's house next door.
Liu Ye took out three tomatoes from her spatial storage, stir-fried them into an egg and tomato dish, mixed some dough, scooped out half a bowl of noodles, and made a tomato-based noodle dish. She found two large bowls in the cupboard, because noodles must be eaten in large bowls.
She served herself half a bowl of noodles and gave Bai Zilin a full bowl, topped with egg sauce.
Bai Zilin returned shortly afterward. The two of them didn't go back inside, but sat on the kitchen threshold to eat. All that could be heard was slurping; no one spoke.
Bai Zilin finished half a bowl of noodles with satisfaction before he could speak: "Delicious! Tomato braised noodles are so delicious. I think they're better than fried sauce noodles, even though I've never had them before."
Liu Ye swallowed the noodles in her mouth. The tomato and meat sauce noodles she made today were indeed delicious. She realized that everything she cooked tasted good now. In her previous life, her cooking skills were only so-so, and she occasionally made some disastrous dishes that she would only feed to the garbage can. "Yesterday I went to the market and saw someone selling sauce, but I forgot to buy some. I'll go to the market next time and buy a jar, then I'll make you some meat sauce noodles. Meat sauce noodles are so delicious, 100 times better than tomato sauce noodles."
Bai Zilin smiled and nodded, then slurped up another big mouthful of noodles, looking completely satisfied.
At Village Chief Wu's house, Village Chief Wu's wife, Granny Wu, said with a lingering fear, "Thank goodness Matchmaker Zhang wasn't home, otherwise our family would have been utterly humiliated!"
Village Chief Wu's dark face was full of displeasure: "Hmph! I never thought that Bai Zilin, who looks so respectable, is actually a bastard. He's really a scoundrel. I've seen it all. I'll see how he tries to act like a human being in front of me from now on. Last time with Er Gouzi, look at how capable he was. He kept talking about reporting to the authorities, as if I was afraid of him reporting to the authorities..."
"But then again, although he's a bastard and doesn't know who his father is, his hunting skills are real. I heard he sold a deer for several hundred taels of silver. Good heavens, I've been the village chief for almost my whole life and I've never seen 50 taels of silver. No wonder he has money to build a house. Once he builds the house, Bai Zilin will be the boss in the village, surpassing our family. Our family will no longer be the richest in the village."
When Granny Wu heard that Bai Zilin had sold his daughter for several hundred taels of silver, she was immediately tempted: "Husband, since Bai Zilin is so good at making money, why don't we marry our daughter to him? In this day and age, if you can make money and live a good life, what does it matter if he's a bastard or not? A good reputation can't put food on the table."
Village Chief Wu agreed with his wife: "No rush, let's wait and see, and talk about it after Bai Zilin finishes building the house."
