Chapter 142 Garden Discovery
When Ye Mingzhu sent Jiang Hongyu out, she asked him if something had happened again.
Jiang Hongyu looked around and whispered, "We received news from the county yesterday afternoon that the new county magistrate will be arriving in a few days. It is said that the previous county magistrate had never been to Pinggu Town. Everyone is speculating that something big is going to happen here."
"I'm afraid something else might happen then, so why don't you go back to the village first."
Ye Mingzhu didn't expect this to be the reason. It had only been a short time since the new county magistrate took office, but it felt like so many things had happened.
"Have the county's affairs been resolved?" Ye Mingzhu swore that she was not curious. She just wondered how the county magistrate had time to go down there in just a few days?
Jiang Hongyu shook his head: "What happened in the county hasn't reached us yet. Be more careful when you go out these days. If you feel something is wrong, go back to the village first."
Ye Mingzhu nodded: "Well, we will pay more attention, don't worry."
After sending Jiang Hongyu away, Ye Mingzhu closed the door.
Ye Yun'an had nothing to do after dinner, so he took the newly bought hoe and went to the small garden to hoe the land.
Aunt Jiang stopped him from behind: "It's cold now. Even if we hoe the ground well, we can't plant the crops."
Ye Yun'an looked at the wall and whispered, "Everyone says there are treasures in this house. I'll dig the ground and look for it carefully."
Ye Mingzhu knew that there was no treasure in the small garden, but she did not stop him. She took a hoe and helped him hoe the ground.
Aunt Jiang had nothing to do, so she took a piece of cloth and started embroidering next to them. The three of them were talking and laughing. Aunt Ma, who was standing next to them, heard them and rolled her eyes at home.
"The little garden has been turned over by so many people, how could there be anything there?"
Mrs. Ma listened for a while at the other side of the wall. Seeing that the newly moved Jiang family members were hoeing the fields, she lost her patience and went back to the house to mend her torn clothes.
Ye Yun'an was really hoeing the ground. He had taken off his coat and his head was sweating.
Ye Mingzhu handed him a cloth and said, "Don't work so hard. There used to be flowers planted here. If there was anything underneath, it would have been discovered long ago."
Ye Yun'an's eyes sparkled: "That's not certain. What if I'm lucky and there are flowers growing on it? I'll dig deeper."
Ye Mingzhu thought this was a bit silly, but Aunt Jiang stopped her: "It's nothing anyway, Xiao An can dig if he wants."
Aunt Jiang also instructed Ye Yun'an to dig deeper underground near her own yard to build a cellar.
After hearing this, Ye Yun'an became even more motivated. He changed the location and started digging where Aunt Jiang was directing.
This piece of land is at the corner of the wall. The upper layer is very loose and easy to dig, but after digging about one meter, the soil underneath is very hard and there are stones in the soil. It is very troublesome to start cleaning the stones after digging for a while.
By noon, Ye Yun'an's hands were shaking.
When Jiang Hongyu came back at noon and saw it, he also advised him not to bother with it, as the family didn't need the cellar now anyway, so he could just dig slowly.
When digging again in the afternoon, Ye Yun'an reduced his effort, mainly because there were too many stones and it took longer to clear the stones than to dig the ground.
"What was this land used for in the past? Why are there so many stones?" Ye Yun'an shook his head while digging.
Ye Mingzhu couldn't explain it clearly. She only remembered that the broker said this was a small garden. The land in the middle looked easy to dig, but who knew there were so many stones on the edge.
For two consecutive days, Ye Yun'an was digging a hole in the corner of the small garden. At the beginning, Ye Mingzhu and Aunt Jiang were there with him.
After digging for a day, Ye Mingzhu's arms were sore, so she painted in the house the next day.
Jiang Hongyu would help him dig for a while after coming back from his shift, but Ye Yunan would always push him: "Brother-in-law, you've been patrolling all day, you must be tired, I can do it myself."
Seeing that he could indeed do it, Jiang Hongyu reminded him not to overwork himself.
Until the third night, Ye Yun'an was still digging the hole, saying that it would be finished in a while.
After dinner, everyone had nothing to do, so they all stayed with him in the small garden.
Ye Yun'an and Jiang Hongyu were digging the soil below, while Aunt Jiang and Ye Mingzhu were collecting the soil on top and pouring it to the side.
A small mound of earth has been piled up on the open space in the small garden. Fortunately, Mrs. Ma has not come these two days, otherwise she would have said some nonsense.
"Hiss..." A scream suddenly came from below, and it sounded like Ye Yun'an.
Ye Mingzhu's heart skipped a beat. Could it be that the hoe had dug her foot?
she asked, looking into the cave.
There was only a faint light in the cave, but no one spoke. Aunt Jiang was also a little anxious, so she raised her voice a little: "Brother Yu, Xiao An, what's wrong?"
Jiang Hongyu's voice came from below: "It's okay, it was just an accidental bump, we'll be coming up soon."
Ye Mingzhu sounded calm, so nothing should be wrong.
She comforted Aunt Jiang, who was also worried, and saw Jiang Hongyu climbing up. She looked him up and down and found that there seemed to be nothing on his body except dirt.
Jiang Hongyu reached down with both hands, took out a wooden box, and then reached out to pull Ye Yunan up.
Ye Mingzhu widened her eyes. Is there really something in the garden?
This isn't a courtyard, this is a treasure trove, right?
Ye Mingzhu couldn't help but wonder if there were other treasures hidden in this place.
Jiang Hongyu had already taken the box into the house. Ye Yunan tiptoed to the door to listen for any noise, then carefully walked around the courtyard wall before returning to the house.
Ye Mingzhu was standing at the door, looking at his cautious look and felt a little amused. When did this kid become so meticulous in doing things?
After checking everything and finding nothing wrong, Ye Yun'an returned to the room, closed the door, and came to the table with excitement on his face: "Brother-in-law, what's in this box?"
The eight eyes of the four people were all staring at the small box.
Jiang Hongyu had wiped off the dirt on the box with a cloth. The box was light brown with irregular vertical cracks and a small lock hanging on it.
Ye Yun'an touched the lock carefully and looked up at Jiang Hongyu: "Brother-in-law, how do I open this lock?"
Jiang Hongyu took a closer look and fiddled with it casually. With a "click", the lock fell off.
Everyone was stunned for a moment. Is the lock broken?
Jiang Hongyu was also a little surprised. He didn't expect the lock on the box to be so fragile. It fell off with just a slight pull.
"It seems that this box has been buried underground for a long time and must have rusted." Aunt Jiang pointed to the fallen lock and showed everyone the rust on it.
In the dim light, everyone also discovered this problem.
"It might contain something like calligraphy or paintings. This box is made of camphor wood. Most people use it to store clothes or books. This box is so small, it's unlikely to hold clothes. I guess it contains books, calligraphy or paintings."
Aunt Jiang pointed at the box and continued analyzing it.
"Ah?" Ye Yun'an suddenly felt disappointed. "What kind of treasure is calligraphy and painting?"
"That's not necessarily true. You'll know once you open it." Ye Mingzhu said as she opened the box.
