Chapter 4: Marriage in Public
Lin paused and almost tripped.
When the villagers heard that more than 700 pearl oysters had belonged to Uncle Ye's family, they all speculated how many pearls were inside, and some even congratulated Uncle Ye on his wealth.
Uncle Ye was furious. He thought that these were all saved for his nephew, but he was reluctant to give them away. When he thought about the fact that Ye Mingzhu would lose the money she earned from selling pearls in the future, he felt even more sad.
Seeing that they didn't say anything, the villagers who wanted to watch the fun started to calculate the money based on the ratio of one pearl for every ten pearl oysters.
Uncle Ye pushed the crowd away impatiently, caught a glimpse of a figure out of the corner of his eye, paused, and whispered something to Lin.
Lin immediately looked towards the courtyard, her face a smile like a weasel greeting a chicken: "Mingzhu, do you know who saved you? It was him. You must thank him sincerely."
Everyone stopped talking and looked in the direction Lin pointed. Everyone's faces were like an overturned palette, with all kinds of colors on them.
Ye Mingzhu looked at the man who stood out from the crowd. He was over 1.8 meters tall, with sharp eyebrows and bright eyes. His eye sockets were a bit deep. At first glance, even his tattered clothes could not conceal his aristocratic temperament.
But why do people look at him with such strange expressions, disdain, fear, indifference...
"Mingzhu, although Jiang Hongyu was exiled, he saved you after all. This is not good after all." Lin said these words with embarrassment, her eyes full of excitement.
Ye Mingzhu didn't even sneer, but just looked at Lin quietly. Was he planning to ruin her reputation?
"At that time, Miss Ye fell into the water and didn't come out for an incense stick of time. Uncle Ye was shouting there, and you stopped Uncle Ye, so I went into the water. Was it wrong for me to go into the water to save Miss Ye?" Jiang Hongyu gave Lin a cold look.
Lin was choked, and then became angry and said, "My Mingzhu is a pure and innocent girl. I let you hold her in my arms. I can't just let it go like this."
Jiang Hongyu looked at Ye Mingzhu and said, "I would like to marry Miss Ye."
A single stone caused a thousand ripples, and the onlookers were talking about it.
Ye Mingzhu was a little surprised. Jiang Hongyu didn't look like the kind of person who would be willing to be manipulated by others.
"As an exile, what qualifications do you have to marry a girl from our Ye family?" Uncle Ye and Mrs. Lin looked at each other, and Mrs. Lin's sharp voice rang out.
Jiang Hongyu ignored Lin and stared at Ye Mingzhu with a sharp gaze: "Although our Jiang family was exiled here, I can fish and do odd jobs, and my mother is a doctor. If you marry into our family, my mother will treat you as her own daughter."
"Most importantly, you can marry with your younger brother."
Ye Mingzhu's eyes lit up instantly at these words.
She had just woken up when Ye Yun'an exchanged his most treasured set of clothes for eggs. She couldn't let him keep her and live on her own in the future, so she had to protect him well.
The original owner had always been compromising, thinking that after she got married, her uncle's family could protect her younger brother.
Girls in remote mountain villages usually start dating when they reach the age of marriage and get married when they are sixteen or seventeen.
Since ancient times, it has been uncommon for a sister to marry with her younger brother. The original owner wanted her to be nicer to her uncle's family and collect more pearl oysters for them, so that the three cousins of her uncle's family would be nicer to Ye Yun'an in the future.
Uncle Ye took advantage of this point of hers and always treated her and her siblings harshly.
"Okay, I'll marry you." Ye Mingzhu agreed after only a moment's thought.
In modern times, she had never been in a relationship due to illness. Unexpectedly, someone proposed to her as soon as she arrived in ancient times. He was a handsome man and her savior. After getting married, she could also take care of her younger brother. She really had no reason to refuse.
Jiang Hongyu's lips curled up because of her straightforward agreement.
"Nonsense! How can you bring your younger brother with you to get married? We are not left without people in the Ye family." Uncle Ye's furious voice rang out at the door, drowning out the villagers' discussions.
This time Lin pushed Ye Mingzhu into the sea, and the siblings will live alone in the future. I guess there will be a lot of discussion in the village. If Ye Mingzhu is allowed to marry with her brother, doesn't that mean that the Ye family doesn't care about the second branch?
Uncle Ye also looked at Ye Mingzhu disapprovingly: "Mingzhu, your marriage needs to be discussed again. Yun'an is the only son of the second wife and cannot marry with you."
"If Yun'an doesn't marry me, who will support him in the future? Third Uncle? Big Uncle?" Ye Mingzhu glanced at the faces of Third Uncle Ye and Big Uncle Ye, and of course did not ignore the expressions of Fang and Lin.
"Yun'an is the only son of the second wife and my only brother. My parents are not around, so I have the obligation to raise him."
Uncle Ye San may really want to take care of Ye Yun'an, but Fang has never liked them. Uncle Ye and his wife only want to take advantage of them, so how could they be willing to raise a little boy?
"Don't worry, I can definitely support you and your sister." Jiang Hongyu assured in a clear voice.
Ye Mingzhu smiled and blinked, and before anyone could react, her body went limp and she fainted.
Ye Yun'an was so scared that he yelled "Sister", and Uncle Ye and Mrs. Fang hurried over to check.
Jiang Hongyu had long legs and quick steps. He quickly rushed to Ye Mingzhu and supported her.
"Doctor, where's the doctor?" Ye Yun'an looked towards the door with tears in his eyes, "Why hasn't the doctor come yet?"
Jiang Hongyu picked up Ye Mingzhu and walked into the house. He put her on the bed before turning back: "My mother went up the mountain today. I have asked someone to notify her. I think she will be back soon."
Uncle Ye's face had already darkened when Jiang Hongyu hugged Ye Mingzhu. He said stiffly, "Then let's all go out and wait for the doctor. There are too many people in this room."
Ye Mingzhu is a girl after all. Even if she is unconscious, it would not be good for so many people to be in her room.
Jiang Hongyu took the opportunity to feel Ye Mingzhu's pulse, but didn't find anything wrong. He wondered if he wasn't well-trained enough to understand what Third Uncle Ye meant. Instead, he nodded and said, "I'll go find my mother."
Uncle Ye was like punching cotton.
When the villagers saw Jiang Hongyu leaving, they speculated, "Maybe Mingzhu didn't agree with this marriage and that's why she got angry and ran away."
"Jiang Hongyu is good-looking, Mingzhu must be attracted to him."
"What's the point of being good-looking? They were exiled here and can't even leave the county."
…
Someone asked Uncle Ye with ill intentions: "Boss Ye, are you really going to marry Mingzhu to the boy from the Jiang family? Mingzhu can pick pearls, and the second branch has this house, so the betrothal gift cannot be too small.
Uncle Ye felt very upset, but Ye Mingzhu had just fainted in public, so he couldn't leave immediately. He could only walk back to the yard with a cold face, stand with Uncle Ye San, and whispered to Mingzhu what to do about the marriage?
Uncle Ye was worried about Mingzhu's condition and said casually, "Let's talk about it after Mingzhu wakes up."
Lin curled her lips and said, "So what if she wakes up? She's a girl and she can decide her own marriage. It's us who decide for her."
Uncle Ye was about to speak when Jiang Hongyu came in with a woman who was walking hurriedly.
