Chapter 19 Wheelchair
Xia Yanjing first went to the East Market. Things in the East Market were relatively expensive and were generally the place where dignitaries and wealthy businessmen from the capital went. It was believed that the craftsmen in the East Market must have superb skills.
This was the first time he gave a gift to his future brother-in-law, so he felt that he shouldn't be too stingy. Therefore, Xia Yanjing planned to go to the East Market first to take a look and understand the market conditions.
Xia Yanjing went to the East Market to inquire about a carpentry shop. The shop was very large, and the wooden furniture and wooden products inside looked very exquisite. Xia Yanjing walked into the shop with satisfaction.
"Shopkeeper, I want to buy something." Xia Yanjing walked into the shop. The clerk in the shop looked up at Xia Yanjing, then lowered his head again.
"What are you fighting for?" the guy said impatiently.
"I want to make a wheelchair, a push-type chair." Xia Yanjing naturally heard the impatience in the clerk's words, but after seeing the craftsmanship of the furniture in the store, Xia Yanjing was able to hold back.
"No, I won't." The guy refused without thinking.
"Heh." Even if Xia Yanjing valued the craftsmanship of this shop, he couldn't stay there because of the attitude of the shop assistant.
After leaving the East Market, Xia Yanjing headed towards the West Market. When he arrived at the West Market, he asked around. Along the way, Xia Yanjing felt that the West Market was much more lively than the East Market.
Xishi is a place full of life and energy, where all kinds of people gather. Most of the people who come to Xishi are ordinary people.
They are either busy vendors, leisurely passers-by, or tourists. There is no luxury of the rich and powerful here, only the real life scenes of people.
Walking along the streets of West Market, you can see a dazzling array of stalls filled with daily necessities, food, and handicrafts. Stall owners enthusiastically solicit customers and bargain with them, showcasing the bustling and lively life of the market.
From the shops along the street, shouts of hawkers emanated, attracting people's attention. Some shops sold steaming snacks, filling the air with fragrance, while others displayed exquisite handicrafts, pleasing to the eye.
Here, people can feel the rich atmosphere of life: children playing in the streets, old people sitting on the street, basking in the sun and chatting, enjoying this ordinary yet real life.
Xia Yanjing felt that he was just an ordinary person. Although such an ordinary life did not have too many ups and downs and surprises, it made him feel extremely kind and comfortable.
Xia Yanjing slowly pushed open the slightly quaint shop door, and a faint aroma of sawdust wafted in his face.
He stepped into the store and looked around, and found that it was a small furniture store, but the interior decoration was very elegant.
Xia Yanjing looked at the furniture. Although it was not as exquisite as those in the East Market, it was obvious that the craftsman who made it had superb craftsmanship and was more practical. Finally, Xia Yanjing's eyes fell on a wooden table placed in the middle of the store, which looked quite old.
Just as Xia Yanjing was staring at the table, a figure walked out from the corner of the store. It was a tall and strong man with a warm smile on his face. He was the owner of this store.
"Sir, you are here!" The shopkeeper's voice was loud and revealed a sense of generosity.
He walked quickly to Xia Yanjing and asked with a smile on his face, "Sir, please feel free to look around. If there is nothing you like in the store, you can tell me and I can make it according to your requirements."
"Boss, I want to ask you to make something. The price is negotiable." Xia Yanjing looked at the enthusiastic shopkeeper and felt much better.
"Okay, okay. Sir, do you have the drawings? I can print them out for you according to your requirements." The shopkeeper was not perfunctory at all.
"I only have a rough diagram here. You need to figure out the specific details yourself." Xia Yanjing said as he took out the wheelchair blueprint that had been prepared long ago from his arms.
"Why have I never thought of making a car like this before? My sir, you have a really creative idea. May I ask what you would like to call this car?" The shopkeeper was very surprised after looking at the drawings.
"This is called a wheelchair. One person can sit on it, and the person behind can push the wheelchair to move it. I wonder if the shopkeeper can print it out."
Xia Yanjing was a little nervous at the moment. He was afraid that the shopkeeper in front of him would not be able to fight. To be honest, he still liked the shopkeeper in front of him very much. It would surely be a pleasure to cooperate with him.
"I've never fought like this before, so I can't guarantee anything, but I'm willing to give it a try," the shopkeeper said uncertainly.
"That's great. Shopkeeper, please don't call me guest. You are older than me, so just call me Brother Jing. I wonder what your name is, shopkeeper?" Xia Yanjing wanted to make friends with the shopkeeper.
"My name is Zhang Mu, Jingdi, just call me Brother Zhang. I think we have a good eye for each other, Jingdi. I wonder if there is a chance for us to be friends." Zhang Mu said generously.
"That's exactly what I meant, Brother Zhang." This was the first friend Xia Yanjing made in this world.
"Brother Jing, come and sit down and have some tea, we'll talk in detail." Zhang Mu enthusiastically pulled Xia Yanjing to sit down next to the table.
Then Zhang Mu shouted to the back, "Husband, pour some tea."
"Coming right up." A slightly rough voice came from behind the door.
"Brother Jing, when do you plan to get this wheelchair, and what kind of wood will it be made of?"
"Of course, the sooner the better. I don't know much about the better types of wood." Xia Yanjing really didn't know much.
"If it's better, the wheels and axles can be made of eucalyptus or yellow sandalwood, and the seat can be made of camphor wood. Summer is coming soon, and the smell of oak can repel mosquitoes. What do you think, Jingdi?"
"Brother Zhang knows the most. I'll listen to him and tell him approximately how much silver the entire production will cost." Xia Yanjing was not very clear about the price of ancient carpentry, and it was custom-made.
"In the early stage of trial and error, I used some ordinary boards, and later on, I used the boards we ordered. The cost was about five taels of silver, mainly because the sandalwood boards are more expensive." Zhang Mu said honestly.
"So cheap." Xia Yanjing was shocked. He thought it would cost dozens of taels of silver.
"That's still cheap. Five taels of silver is enough for ordinary people to spend in a year." Zhang Mu saw that Xia Yanjing was dressed in ordinary clothes and did not look like a rich family. He actually thought five taels of silver was cheap. Zhang Mu was a little puzzled.
"No, no. It's just that this is a new thing and I thought it would be more expensive." Xia Yanjing said jokingly.
"I'm not being polite with you. After all, I have to support my husband." Zhang Mu said with a hearty laugh.
"What are you laughing at, husband?" A rough voice came from behind.
"Ma'am, come here quickly. This is my new good brother." Zhang Mu introduced enthusiastically.
