Chapter 91: Money is Hard to Earn and Shit is Hard to Eat

The old man looked Su Ying from head to toe, and then from toe to face.

The little girl is pretty.

"What do you want to see the factory manager about?"

"Hello, sir. I'm here to work."

Are you here to work?

What kind of class are you taking?

This is a state-owned factory, and you need a letter of introduction to come and work.

"Little girl, where is your letter of introduction? I see that you are not yet an adult."

Su Ying was a little embarrassed. She came in through the back door because of connections, so where did she get the letter of introduction?

...

...

"Uncle, I'm so sorry, I don't have a letter of introduction. The person who issued the letter of introduction should have called the factory director."

The old man was a little hesitant. He saw that the little girl's dress and appearance were not that of an ordinary person. He didn't dare to offend the people in the factory easily. Who knew if she was a man or a woman? If he offended her accidentally, he would be blamed.

The old man hesitated and said, "Wait here for a moment. Director Liao hasn't come yet. I'll tell you when he comes. Go and talk to him."

"Thank you, sir."

It's working hours now, and workers are coming to work on bicycles one after another at the gate.

These people have jobs and a fixed income every month, so their living conditions are not bad, except for those who have many brothers and sisters and whose parents are partial to one of them. Their lives are worse than those of the country people, and everyone has to tighten their belts to make ends meet.

Su Ying waited patiently. When the workers who came to work saw a strange face standing at the factory gate, who was also very good-looking, they couldn't help but tilt their heads and take a look with a smile.

Su Ying felt a little uncomfortable being looked at.

A few minutes later, the number of people at the gate gradually decreased. Not far away, a middle-aged man in his forties, wearing a navy blue Zhongshan suit, riding a brand new 28-bar bicycle and wearing black-rimmed glasses, came towards this side.

The old man said, "Little girl, that is Director Liao. Come in later and talk to him yourself."

"Thank you, sir."

The bicycle came closer and Director Liao got off.

He pushed his bicycle into the gate, and Su Ying stepped forward and smiled politely.

"Hello, Director Liao, my name is Su Ying, and I'm here to work."

Director Liao paused, seemed distracted for a few seconds, and adjusted his glasses.

"You are Su Ying."

"Yes, Director Liao."

"Okay, Lao Feng has already communicated with me yesterday. You are the wife of the soldier in the compound in front, right?"

Who is Lao Feng? Su Ying was surprised and thought about asking him when she got home that night.

"Yes."

"I've learned about your situation. Lao Feng said you only graduated from elementary school. Our factory also has requirements for employees. You can't be a regular employee when you first come here. You can only be a temporary worker. Do you have any objections?"

Director Liao is a straightforward man. This little matter is aboveboard and he is not afraid of what others may say. If he calls Su Ying to the office to talk, it will easily lead to gossip.

After he finished speaking, he just let Su Ying go to work.

Su Ying was annoyed and grumbled in her heart. Lao Feng said that she only graduated from elementary school. Now she didn't dare to speak carelessly, for fear that she would lose her job if she said something wrong.

She quickly shook her head: "No problem, no problem."

"That's good. If you have any problems at work, just go to the director. The director is a female comrade, so it will be convenient for you to communicate."

"Thank you, Director Liao."

Su Ying quickly bowed to express her gratitude. Director Liao saw that she was too polite and couldn't help but smile and turned to the uncle who opened the door and said, "Uncle Li, take Comrade Su Ying to the production workshop to see Director Wang."

"Okay, Director Liao."

Director Liao nodded, parked his bicycle aside, and went straight into the office with his briefcase.

Old Li took Su Ying to the production workshop to find Director Wang.

Uncle Li said, "Director Wang, this is a new employee in your workshop. Director Liao asked me to bring her to you so that you can arrange the arrangements."

Director Wang looked to be in his early thirties, with short hair and a blue lapel work suit.

Director Wang looked cold and raised his chin.

"New here?"

Su Ying took the initiative to extend her hand: "Hello, Director Wang, my name is Su Ying, and I'm a new temporary worker."

Director Wang extended his hand and shook her hand: "You're new here. OK, follow me."

Director Wang took Su Ying to get a set of navy blue work clothes, two white hats, two pairs of white sleeves, a pack of masks and two white aprons.

Director Wang reminded, "This is food. You have to cover your hair when you work every day. Your mask and apron must be kept clean. You have to start work at 8 a.m., have a 20-minute lunch break at noon, and get off work at 6 p.m. Do you remember everything?"

"Remember this, Director Wang."

"Work hard. Our factory offers good treatment. If you are selected as an advanced activist at the end of the year, you will be rewarded with bicycle tickets and radio tickets."

Su Ying smiled energetically: "Thank you Director Wang, I will try my best."

"Okay, I'll take you around the factory first."

Director Wang took Su Ying on a tour of the production workshop, and soon she was standing next to a machine, putting lids on glass bottles filled with cans.

I thought it wouldn't be very busy since it's not the autumn harvest season, but wild vegetables are growing in abundance these past two days and they are producing canned wild vegetables.

You don't know until you try. After standing for a whole morning, Su Ying deeply felt that money is hard to earn and shit is hard to eat.

By the time it was time for lunch, her legs would become stiff.

Some people brought their own lunch, while others ate in the cafeteria. Su Ying didn't even bring an aluminum lunch box. When she was about to line up, a girl with two braids next to her said, "I see you're new here today. Don't you know you need to bring a lunch box when you eat in our cafeteria?"

Su Ying then realized that she had nothing in her hands, and she smiled embarrassedly.

"I have no idea."

"Then remember to bring it tomorrow. You just arrived today. Have you bought a meal ticket from Director Wang?"

Meal ticket?

Su Ying was even more embarrassed, she really didn't know.

The girl smiled and said, "I'll give you one. You can borrow a bowl from the cafeteria later and have a meal there first. Remember to bring your lunch box when you come tomorrow."

As the girl spoke, she took out a thin, light pink square paper from her pocket, on which was printed a meal ticket from the state-owned cannery.

Su Ying took it generously: "Thank you, I will return it to you later."

"It's okay, you can just treat me to a meal later. By the way, my name is Du Lili, what's your name?"

"Su Ying."

Du Lili smiled and said, "What a nice name."

Du Lili's window was faster, so it was her turn soon.

When it was Su Ying's turn, she borrowed a bowl from the canteen. The food in the canteen was cabbage vermicelli, two two-pound steamed buns, and free sauerkraut soup.

Su Ying thanked the person serving food at the window and found a seat in the corner. Du Lili also sat opposite her with her lunch box.

Du Lili said, "I haven't been here long either. The food in the cafeteria isn't very tasty. I plan to bring my own food in a few days. It's cheaper to bring your own food. This meal costs 20 cents per serving. I think it's quite expensive."

Su Ying glanced at the two big white steamed buns in the bowl, each weighing one pound, and thought they were okay.

The dish didn't look very appetizing, but once she took a bite her eyes lit up; it was surprisingly delicious.

"Thank you for the ticket, otherwise I would have gone hungry at noon today."

"Why be polite? We are all friends."

Su Ying took a bite of the steamed bun and felt a little worried about Lu Dongsheng.

I wonder if he has eaten?
