Chapter 53 Some dogs can get on the bed...
"Why would the boss do something like peeping? Is there anything that can't be said directly?"
James had just got off work, and now it was another person's turn to accompany Leo to squat outside Irene's room. He sat in the doctor's office, puzzled.
"Get your stinky feet off my stool first," the doctor kicked James's big feet, which smelled terrible after he took off his shoes.
"Hey," James said dissatisfiedly, "Brother-in-law, you didn't treat me like this when you were pursuing my sister before."
"So what? I'm in power now, okay? Be respectful, or I'll go back and tell your sister that you're talking bad about the boss behind his back," the doctor slowly made himself a cup of black tea.
James put on his shoes indignantly.
The doctor added: "As for the boss's matter, it's not hard to understand. Think about how the boss was when you first met him."
"Late 1962?" James frowned, and after a moment of recollection, he gave a fair evaluation: "The boss looked like a poor homeless man. I remember his beard almost grew to his Adam's apple, sticking out of his chin like a weed."
"I heard William mention some of it. The eldest brother traveled all over the United States looking for Miss Irene. When he ran out of money, he took odd jobs and even took a smuggling ship to save money. He was almost sold as a slave, but there was no news from Miss Irene. Then one day he suddenly stopped looking. Even William thought he had given up. After all, he hadn't found her for two whole years. A normal person would definitely realize that Miss Irene must have had an accident. Otherwise, how could a living person suddenly disappear in New Orleans?"
The doctor's lips were dry from what he was saying, so he lifted the lid and sipped the tea.
"Then what happened later? Why did the boss suddenly stop looking?"
"Because someone told him that Miss Irene was no longer in the United States."
"How is that possible?" James sneered. "Don't I know the boss's character? How could he change his mind just because of someone else's words? There must be other reasons that you don't know."
The doctor said slowly and sarcastically: "Humph, your sister is right, you really are just a little brat."
James was furious. "You're talking nonsense. I'm -"
"You've never been desperate, have you?" The doctor looked up at James, his tone suddenly becoming cold.
"You have never experienced the kind of complete despair, where you can't see hope with your eyes open, and you can't see hope with your eyes closed. You can't even dream of the person you want to see. What's the point of living like this?"
"Before the boss met that man, he was already prepared to die. He arranged everything for everyone except himself. He really didn't plan to live at that time."
"If that person hadn't told him that Miss Irene might still come back, you would have been dead a long time ago, okay? It was after that incident that the boss started working hard to make money."
James asked doubtfully, "If that's what you said, shouldn't the boss tell Miss Irene how much he missed her when he saw her? It's better to complain a little, because women are the most susceptible to this anyway."
"You make it sound so easy. The boss is not a puppet. How can he not have any emotions after searching for so many years? How could he not have any resentment?" The doctor sighed in disappointment. "You will understand when you fall in love and get married in the future."
"Then according to what you said, when will the boss be able to get along normally with Miss Irene? I really can't stand spying on others every day," James complained.
The doctor was silent for a moment, then opened the window of the consulting room. He looked at the clear blue sky and said leisurely, "It all depends on what Miss Irene chooses."
"However, if I were Miss Irene, I would probably be quite devastated right now. After all, who wouldn't be exhausted if they suddenly had to shoulder such a heavy emotional burden?"
*
"Miss Irene, if the person missing at that time was Leo, what would you choose?" Mrs. Soy poured Irene a cup of tea.
Although she looked much older than she was four years ago, she seemed to be in good spirits and her eyes were bright.
"I will definitely go find him too," Irene answered without hesitation.
"Will you spend two years searching like he did? Almost all over the United States?"
Irene fell silent, holding her teacup.
Not to mention her, it would be difficult for anyone else to do what Leo did.
Mrs. Soy smiled gently. She was asked by Leo to come and have a heart-to-heart talk with Irene today. Because she had some dealings with Irene before, it was easier for her to gain Irene's trust.
Her main task was to persuade Irene to take the initiative to make peace with Leo, and preferably to persuade her to marry Leo directly.
If she could do this, Leo would promote her little grandson, Mrs. Soy's eyes gleamed.
Mrs. Soy looked at Irene carefully. It was shocking that after so many years, this young lady had not changed at all.
The tea gradually cooled down. Irene lowered her head and remained silent.
"He really loves you, otherwise he wouldn't have worked so hard to find you for more than two years," Mrs. Soy patted the back of Irene's hand, her tone kind.
"But when he first saw me, he looked at me as if I were a stranger," Irene honestly expressed her feelings, including the fact that Leo hadn't come to see her in the past two days.
"He must still be resentful. You disappeared without a word for almost five years. Who wouldn't be angry?"
Irene was speechless. The time travel was beyond her control and she didn't expect that five years would pass in a flash.
For her it was just a little over a month since she last saw Leo.
Mrs. Soi added, "Besides, Leo is rich and powerful now. If you give in to him and coax him, you will definitely live a comfortable life. Apart from anything else, no matter what kind of store you want to open now, just let him know and he can handle everything from site selection to decoration. All you need to do is lie down and count your money. Isn't that good enough?"
Mrs. Soy kept talking about Leo's good points, and Irene became more and more silent.
What on earth is this? Irene couldn't believe it.
Why did so many people come to talk to her about Leo today, from the doctor to Mrs. Soy, they seemed to be persuading her, but in fact everyone was blaming her from Leo's perspective.
But Leo himself lurked behind all the people who spoke up for him, as if he was wronged.
Doesn't she feel wronged?
What on earth is this?
And marry him and let him support you? Mrs. Soy's words hit Irene's nerves hard, and she wanted to leave Leo's territory immediately.
Irene exhaled, put the cup on the bedside table, covered her head and said weakly: "I'm sorry, I'm a little uncomfortable now. Can we talk about it in a few days?"
Mrs. Soy could tell at a glance that Irene was trying to drive her away, and she felt a little unhappy.
Leo has helped her family a lot over the years. He is a very successful man and earns a lot of money. It's a pity that Leo's heart is set on Irene. Otherwise, he could marry anyone he wants in New Orleans.
In her eyes, Irene was the typical person who didn't know what was good for her.
With this in mind, Mrs. Soy's tone was inevitably filled with indignation for Leo, and her voice was a little harsh. "If you don't like him, just reject him as soon as possible. Don't waste his time. There are many people in New Orleans who want to marry their daughters to him."
With that, Mrs. Soey picked up her cane and went out.
Irene was criticized for no reason, it was like a cauldron dropped from the sky and thrown on her head.
She touched the bone ring on her hand, and tried to pull it down with her fingers, but the ring seemed to have taken root in her hand and did not move.
After pulling for a long time, Irene fell on the bed in frustration. She looked at the jade-white ring in her hand, and suddenly an idea popped up in her mind -
If she had known this would happen, she would rather not have come back.
*
"Miss, Miss——"
Suddenly, several familiar voices were heard from under the bed. Irene was startled and almost screamed.
A round head suddenly popped out from under the bed sheet. The moment the black girl saw her, tears welled up in her eyes.
"Oh my God, Hannah, why are you under the bed?" Irene sat up and subconsciously lowered her voice. "Didn't they say you went to Europe to study?"
"That bastard Leo, so this is how he lied to you," Hannah cursed Leo in her hometown dialect. Irene didn't understand, but she could tell from Hannah's tone that the curse was probably quite dirty.
"I didn't go to Europe. I went to school in New York. I studied law there."
"That's great, Hannah, you're so awesome," Irene hugged Hannah tightly. The little girl in her arms had obviously grown up and seemed to be taller than her, but the look in her eyes when she looked at her was still the same as before.
A sour feeling spread through her chest. Irene blinked again, and her eyes became moist.
"Fortunately you grew up well, fortunately you are all okay, I was almost scared to death on the boat."
As she spoke, she couldn't help but burst into tears.
Hannah couldn't help but have tears in her eyes.
But time did not allow her to be sad for too long. Hannah quickly calmed down. She looked into Irene's eyes and asked in a low voice:
"Miss, do you want to go to New York? I'll take you there. I secretly rented a store. Let's open a store together."
"Don't bring Leo. Who allowed him to bully you like this?"
Irene opened her eyes wide in bewilderment.
*
"I have said everything I should have said," Mrs. Soi said to Leo in a gentle voice, "but Miss Irene is really stubborn. She is too stubborn."
"Thank you for your hard work," Leo nodded at her with a cold expression.
“Do you really have to go through so much trouble?” Old William followed behind Leo, looking at the man’s extraordinarily exquisite attire over the past two days, and sighed, “You should have said these things to Miss Irene in person.”
Are you really that timid? William quietly added in his heart, even if Miss Irene rejects him, so what? If he is rejected, he can just chase her again.
Normally he dares to do anything, but when it comes to serious matters he starts to act foolishly.
Now, both of them are held up.
William couldn't help but persuade her again, "Men should take the initiative at times like this. I have been with my wife for so many years, and every time she gets angry, I humble myself and coax her. This is how we can live smoothly. If you take the initiative to give Miss Irene a way out, won't this matter be over?"
Leo was silent for a while. The sun shone on his angular face, casting a shadow on the side of his tall nose.
"Then what's the difference between me and a dog?"
"She disappeared without a word for 1,546 days. Am I going to pounce on her like a dog to show my loyalty as soon as she comes back? What's the torment and pain I've endured because of her in these 1,000 days?" Leo pursed his lips into a straight line, turned his head and looked at William coldly.
"Tell me, what am I? A lapdog who lets her bully me? Who has to wag his tail and run after his master when he sees him?"
Leo turned his head and squatted back under the window of Irene's room. His voice seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth.
"I must teach her a lesson this time. I want her to know the price of abandoning me."
"Let's see if she dares to abandon me again in the future."
William stammered a few times, but in the end he couldn't say a word.
What's wrong with being a dog? He once pretended to be a puppy to please his wife.
He glanced at Leo's skillful movements as he squatted under the window and rolled his eyes speechlessly.
To be honest, you are no different from a dog now.
Even worse than a dog.
Some dogs can even enter their owner's house, and some can even get on the bed. Can you do that, kid?
