Chapter 1 Back to 1958

well……

Bai Xiaoyue sighed countless times as she sat on a chair in the courtyard and looked around again.

When she saw the few thatched huts in the yard, she tapped her head again with her slightly rough hands.

Bai Xiaoyue could hardly believe it; she was a model young woman in the 21st century who never had to worry about food or drink.

How did it all happen so quickly, spanning over sixty years, to reach the era when my grandparents were struggling to find food and clothing?

She was born in the 1990s. Her parents had a very good relationship, and she was their only child.

Although my family was of modest means, my parents loved me dearly, and I was born at a good time.

My parents are good cooks and run a small restaurant in the city. We've always lived a life free from financial worries.

Whenever she had time, she would help out at the family restaurant. Knowing how hard her parents worked to earn money, she put in extra effort in her studies.

After years of hard work, Bai Xiaoyue was admitted to a prestigious university and has a good job as an editor at a magazine.

Unfortunately, her mother fell ill shortly after she started working.

After surgery and chemotherapy, my mother suffered a great deal, but in the end, we still couldn't save her.

She was left to rely on her father, but he was always depressed after losing his lover. A few years later, he passed away, leaving her all alone.

Although Bai Xiaoyue was heartbroken and lonely after losing her parents, she still lived her life positively!

Work hard, buy a house, buy a car, and make sure you live a fulfilling life every day!

Why is she now the nineteen-year-old Bai Xiaoyue?

She was ten years younger than me, and her features were somewhat similar to mine.

He had arched willow-leaf eyebrows, large and bright almond-shaped eyes, and a classic oval face. He appeared to be about 1.65 meters tall, but was sallow and thin.

The floral-patterned jacket didn't fit her at all; it was loose and baggy.

Bai Xiaoyue is only 19 years old, but she has been married to Ye Jianhua, a soldier from the same village, for three years and they have a two-year-old daughter.

However, it is said that Ye Jianhua has just sacrificed his life.

Bai Xiaoyue was in a daze while doing things at home after learning of her husband's death, and she injured her head.

When she woke up from her coma, she was replaced with a new body. Because she had no memories of the original owner, she had to pretend that she had injured her head and remembered nothing.

Her parents were very worried, so they took her home to recuperate.

What's even more tragic is that this is 1958! Why?

Thinking back to all the novels I read during my student days, with their time-travel and rebirth themes, mostly about princesses and legitimate daughters.

How come for her it's the 1950s when there was nothing at all?

Forget about cell phones and computers, we didn't even have electricity. The only electrical appliance we had was a flashlight.

This is not something every household can have.

Or you could travel back to the 1980s or 1990s! At least you'd have an ID card and be free to come and go as you please.

But why 1958? Thinking about the impending three years of natural disasters, the life of earning work points in the collective... ah...

Bai Xiaoyue cried out in her heart, "God, how am I supposed to live if I'm a woman who can't carry anything on my shoulders, can't lift anything with my hands, is lazy, and doesn't know anything about farming? I'm doomed!"

I curse God a thousand times in my heart, and miss the freedom of modern life ten thousand times.

Aside from making her feel worse and more upset, nothing changed, and she had to pull herself together and face reality.

"Daughter, dinner's ready!" came Bai's mother's voice from behind.

Without toothpaste, I brushed my teeth with salt, drank corn porridge, and ate cornbread with pickled vegetables.

Bai Xiaoyue smiled, but her heart was breaking. Fortunately, there was a boiled egg, which at least soothed her churning stomach.

Knowing nothing about the past of this body made Bai Xiaoyue very flustered and uneasy.

I don't know what to do next.

At this moment, Mr. Bai said to her:

“Daughter, although Jianhua is gone, you still have Le’er. You should think more about her. Today, your mother and I will accompany you back to the Ye family.”

Looking at Bai Yongkang, the father, he was dressed in a blue jacket, a typical northern man.

He was in his forties, with thick eyebrows, big eyes, and dark skin. Years of hard work had left obvious crow's feet around his eyes.

Bai Xiaoyue took a long time to reply with just one word: "Okay."

Seeing his daughter staring at him, and afraid of upsetting her, Mr. Bai didn't dare say anything more.

Bai Xiaoyue ate slowly, her mind racing, and finally finished her meal.

She blinked at her father:

"Dad, my head still hurts, and I still can't remember anything from before."

Bai's mother hurriedly said, "Daughter, the doctor at the health center said that your ailment may take some time to heal."

You'll need to go to the hospital for a check-up on your head injury every now and then, but it's nothing serious, don't worry.

Bai Mu, Ding Guilan, was wearing a maroon jacket with a front opening and blue trousers.

She has bright, large eyes and a delicate face, with faint crow's feet marks at the corners of her eyes.

She patted her daughter's head, seemingly both distressed and comforting.

Along the way, Bai's mother recounted the Ye family's situation in great detail.

Grandpa Ye, Ye Dagui, and his mother, Wu Jinhua, had three children.

The eldest son, Ye Jianzhong, is a 28-year-old farmer. His wife is Chen Hongmei, his daughter is 10 years old, and his son is 6 years old.

The second daughter, Ye Xiaoyan, married into the neighboring Liushu Village. The village head's son, Deng Zhonghua, also had two sons.

The youngest son, Ye Jianhua, is Bai Xiaoyue's husband. The two married through a blind date three years ago and have a two-year-old daughter, Ye Changle.

As they were talking, they arrived at the Ye family's door.

The Ye family seemed to be better off; their walls were made of adobe and covered with tiles.

The neighboring houses on both sides were all thatched huts, making the few tiled houses look particularly impressive.

The person who opened the door was Old Mrs. Ye, who looked a little older than Bai's mother.

She wore a light blue, diagonally-buttoned jacket, her hair was neatly combed, and she looked like a kind-faced, efficient old lady.

Upon seeing Mr. and Mrs. Bai, they greeted them warmly.

"Our in-laws are here! Xiaoyue, quickly invite your parents inside."

Upon hearing the noise, adults and children alike rushed out of the house. There was Mr. Ye, Ye Jianzhong, Ms. Ye's sister-in-law, and three children.

As soon as Sister-in-law Ye came out, she took Bai Xiaoyue's hand and asked, "Sister-in-law, are you feeling any better?"

Their attitude was so friendly that Bai Xiaoyue didn't dare to say a word!

Bai's mother quickly stepped forward:

"Xiaoyue is much better, but she still doesn't remember much. The doctor said we have to take it slowly."

Just then, the chubby little baby ran over, hugged Bai Xiaoyue's leg, and kept calling, "Mommy, Mommy..."

Bai Xiaoyue was at a loss and carefully picked up the baby.

The little girl was wearing a floral jacket and had two little pigtails.

She had almond-shaped eyes exactly like the original owner, and her long, wet eyelashes fluttered as tears fell one by one.

Looking at such an adorable doll, Bai Xiaoyue felt a mix of emotions, both bittersweet and tingly.

She thought about how pitiful this little baby was without a mother!

I don't know how to take care of children, what will I do in the future? I want to go home, even if I have to stay home every day because of the pandemic, I won't complain, really!
