Chapter 8 Discovering the Cellar

After a flurry of activity, Bai's mother said that it was enough, there was still more.

"Mom, make it a little loose. Xiao An will grow taller, and he'll be going to college in a couple of years, so he can still wear it."

"Can you get into university?" Bai's mother asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

"Who's going to college?" Bai Wen'an asked with a smile as he walked in and heard his mother's question.

"Xiao An, we're talking about you, about taking the college entrance exam in the future." Bai Xiaoyue smiled and looked at Bai Wen'an.

"Sister, this might be difficult. Only a few students from our school get into university each year."

"My grades are average, so my chances aren't great." Bai Wen'an scratched his head sheepishly.

"Which subject is the main problem? You can ask the teacher when you have time."

"You can also talk to classmates who get good grades more often," Bai Xiaoyue asked softly.

"My main weaknesses are math and physics."

"So what are your plans?"

"I plan to apply for a humanities major. I'll study math harder and try my best to get in." Bai Wen'an was a little unsure of himself.

Bai Xiaoyue encouraged him:

"I believe you can do it. As for which category to apply for, talk to your teachers and listen to their advice."

"Go and study hard now, I'll steam some buns for you tonight," she urged Bai Wen'an to study.

She waited until Chang Le was fast asleep before gently putting her daughter on the kang (a heated brick bed).

Then, quickly and efficiently, I chopped a large cabbage, squeezed out the water, minced ginger and scallions, added salt and soy sauce, and mixed everything together.

Blanch the pork bones you bought in boiling water and wash them clean.

Then add water and simmer it slowly. It's a big pot full of food. Luckily, the iron pot in the countryside is big enough.

The dough needed time to ferment, so Bai Xiaoyue watched her mother cut clothes next to her.

Seeing her daughter's amused expression, Bai's mother explained the key points of the cutting process to her in detail.

After hearing this, Bai Xiaoyue was eager to try, thinking that if she learned how, she could sew clothes for Chang Le.

She was engrossed in her studies when Chang Le woke up, and Bai Xiaoyue quickly took her daughter to the toilet.

When she got back, she saw that there was a lot of oil on the bone broth. She happily used a spoon to scoop up the oil around the edge of the pot. There were lots of bones and lots of oil.

Then, slowly simmer the oil in a small pot until the moisture evaporates, store it in a jar, and add a spoonful to Chang Le's food every time she eats; it smells wonderful.

My parents used to raise her this way, so it's perfect for raising Chang Le this way now.

You can buy more once you've finished eating. People in this era don't like eating bones, so it's cheap and doesn't require coupons.

Bai Xiaoyue had just finished rendering the bone broth and the dough had risen when she and her daughter started making steamed buns.

Wash Chang Le's little hands clean and give her a small piece of flour to play with.

The steamed buns were wrapped and placed in the steamer, and the bone broth was also ready. It was milky white and very tempting. It only needed a little salt to taste good.

Cabbage buns with pickled vegetables, and a sip of bone broth—delicious!

Bai Xiaoyue ate two of the perfectly seasoned cabbage buns.

Bai Wen'an ate five in one go, repeatedly saying how delicious they were.

Little Chang Le was so engrossed in eating her steamed bun that she didn't even have time to chatter.

Seeing that everyone enjoyed the food, Bai Xiaoyue was very happy.

I know in my heart that it's not because my cooking skills are so good, but because I usually eat sorghum rice and corn porridge, which is why I find white bread so delicious.

She sincerely hopes that these difficult days will pass quickly so that everyone can live a life where they can eat whatever they want.

In just two days, Bai's mother finished sewing her son's clothes.

A perfectly fitted Zhongshan suit, with fine stitches, it's practically a bespoke suit from a later era.

Bai Wen'an was wearing new clothes and grinning from ear to ear.

While tidying her son's clothes, Bai's mother lectured him:

"Your sister bought this fabric, so you'd better treat her well from now on."

"Mom, I know, I will definitely be good to my sister," she said, giving Bai Xiaoyue a hug.

"Okay, okay, I'll be waiting."

After the two siblings laughed and joked around for a while, Bai Wen'an went to school in his new clothes.

Bai Xiaoyue went to the Bai family to get a chisel, and secretly pried open the stone slab in another room that night.

It's a small, box-shaped space, about 40 centimeters in length, width, and height.

Inside was a small box, about the size of a book. She carefully opened it and found five small gold bars and six silver dollars.

Bai Xiaoyue had previously researched this topic in an article, and found that the croaker at this stage weighed 31.25 grams.

Five sticks weigh 156 grams, and each gram can be exchanged for 4 yuan, so that's 625 yuan. Plus silver dollars...wow...I'm rich!

Bai Xiaoyue felt both surprised and heartbroken; surprised that she had received unexpected wealth.

It's heartbreaking that the original homeowners, a couple, left their money for their son, yet they never got to reunite with him before they died.

With the money and two small cellars, plus a vegetable cellar, Bai Xiaoyue was quite happy, having three burrows to keep her safe.

Moreover, because the cellar space is small and the cover is light, it can be moved by oneself, making it convenient to hide things.

This can solve her immediate problem and prevent her and her daughter from going hungry for the next two years.

After reading it, Bai Xiaoyue put the small box back in the cellar, as it would be safer that way.

Now you need ration coupons to buy anything, and even if you have money, there's nowhere to buy things, so you have to rely on yourself.

She instructed Bai's father to plant sweet potato seedlings all around his yard and the Bai family's yard, as this was the perfect time of year for sweet potatoes to grow.

We also planted some potatoes. Potatoes have a short growth cycle, so after harvesting them, we can plant cabbage next.

Mr. Bai was initially reluctant, feeling that there were already too many plants in the field, but he couldn't persuade his daughter otherwise, so he had no choice but to plant them.

Bai Xiaoyue would also occasionally go to the town's market to take a look.

It's called a market, but it's really just a place where nearby farmers gather together and exchange their own things.

They are all very common foods, such as cabbage, potatoes, eggs, and some beans.

There are also some small furniture items used at home, such as kang mats and wooden basins.

She went several times, but only bought 30 jin of soybeans, which she did secretly in two separate trips.

That day, Bai Xiaoyue was weeding in the vegetable garden when she heard a voice outside the yard calling, "Bai Xiaoyue, Bai Xiaoyue..."

She looked up and saw a young girl outside the fence. She had big eyes, a round face, fair skin, and two long braids. She had never seen her before.

Bai Xiaoyue asked through the door, "What's up?"

"You really don't remember anything anymore, you don't even recognize me." The little round-faced girl's eyes were red.

"Who are you? You know I have a poor memory, yet you still ask."

Bai Xiaoyue was puzzled. She had been here for over a month and had never seen this person before. He shouldn't be important!

"I am Li Mingyue, your classmate and your good friend. Open the door for me." She then knocked on the gate a few times.

"I don't remember," Bai Xiaoyue said calmly.

"I didn't even go to work at the supply and marketing cooperative today. I took the day off to come see you, but you still won't open the door." Li Mingyue said, tears welling up in her eyes.

Bai Xiaoyue perked up. "Oh my god, the supply and marketing cooperative!" she exclaimed, and quickly ran over to open the door.

She said with a smile:

"Although I don't remember anything, you look familiar. Come in, come in!"

He pulled Li Mingyue inside and sat her down, poured her some hot water, and packed a few pieces of Chang Le's walnut pastry.
