Chapter 31 Obtaining the Marriage Certificate

With the festive atmosphere of the New Year and no elders around, Bai Xiaoyue felt both physically and mentally free.

She raised her glass to Yan Ci with a smile and said, "Yan Ci, Happy New Year!"

Yan Ci smiled and raised his wine glass: "Happy New Year!" Then he drank it all in one gulp.

Yan Ci calmly refilled Bai Xiaoyue's cup, pouring several cups in a row. Seeing that she was a little drunk, he stopped pouring her more wine.

Bai Xiaoyue was in high spirits, shaking Yan Ci's hand as she did so.

"Yan Ci, good Yan Ci, have another cup."

Yan Ci looked at her flushed face, her bright eyes staring at him, and her little mouth calling his name. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he swallowed hard.

He narrowed his eyes and said, "Xiaoyue, you're drunk. You can't drink anymore."

"I'm not drunk, I'll just have one more drink." Bai Xiaoyue said, extending her index finger.

Yan Ci's lips curled up slightly:

"You wanted to drink it yourself, and I tried to dissuade you."

Yan Ci told Chang Le to go to sleep by herself, and then poured Bai Xiaoyue a cup of wine.

Seeing that Yan Ci had filled her cup, Bai Xiaoyue was as happy as a child who had received a toy, and she sipped the water little by little.

After finishing her drink, Bai Xiaoyue became quite drunk and kept chattering. Yan Ci helped her onto the kang (a heated brick bed), but she still clung to him.

She exclaimed, "Where did this handsome young man come from? He's so good-looking!" Then she touched Yan Ci's face.

Yan Ci stared at her with burning eyes, but Bai Xiaoyue, oblivious, continued to court disaster by touching Yan Ci's lips with her finger.

Yan Ci froze, then pounced on Bai Xiaoyue and kissed her lips directly and passionately, as if he wanted to devour her and make her unable to breathe.

Bai Xiaoyue pounded on Yan Ci's shoulder desperately. Yan Ci released her, looked into her eyes, and asked:

"Bai Xiaoyue, who am I?"

Bai Xiaoyue's eyes were glazed over. She blinked, looked at him carefully, and said softly, "Handsome Yan Ci."

Yan Ci kissed her gently again, tenderly and tenderly, causing Bai Xiaoyue's hands to unconsciously wrap around his neck.

When Bai Xiaoyue woke up, it was already bright daylight. Her head still ached a little, so she pressed her temples with her hands.

Her memory was a bit fragmented; she only remembered eating and drinking, and it seemed that she had pestered Yan Ci to pour her some wine in the end.

I have no recollection of how I got onto the kang (heated brick bed).

Yan Ci brought in a bowl, and seeing that Bai Xiaoyue was awake, he said to her:

"Xiaoyue, you feel unwell. Drinking some honey water will make you feel better."

Bai Xiaoyue drank a bowl of sweet honey water and felt a little better; her head didn't hurt as much. She looked at Yan Ci and asked curiously:

"How did your lip get cut?"

Yan Ci looked down at her, his tone dangerous:

"You don't remember? You're trying to deny everything after you've taken advantage of me?"

Bai Xiaoyue seemed struck by lightning: "What did you say?"

Yan Ci slowly and deliberately got onto the kang (heated brick bed) and faced Bai Xiaoyue:

“You were drunk last night. When I helped you onto the bed, you clung to me and wouldn’t let me leave.”

He paused for a moment, coughed lightly, and then said, "He even forced himself on me."

Bai Xiaoyue stared wide-eyed at Yan Ci, utterly bewildered.

Could it be that I'm an invisible pervert who only comes out when I'm drunk?

But apart from a headache, I don't feel anything different about my body! Don't the books say that the pain is so bad that you can't get out of bed?

"That's absolutely impossible!"

Yan Ci saw that Bai Xiaoyue did not recognize him, so he got off the kang (a heated brick bed) and closed the door.

When he got back, he took off his clothes one by one, leaving his upper body bare for her to see:

"You caught all of these, and you still dare to deny it."

Broad shoulders, narrow waist, and beautifully defined muscles—very alluring.

Bai Xiaoyue could hardly believe that Yan Ci had several glaring red marks on his back.

"Did I catch this?"

Yan Ci glanced at her: "Did I catch it myself? Do you want to compare with your hand?"

After he finished speaking, he grabbed Bai Xiaoyue's hand and tried to pull her over for comparison.

Bai Xiaoyue's fingertips touched the warmth of Yan Ci's chest, startling her so much that she quickly withdrew her hand:

"I believe you, I believe you. You'd better put your clothes on quickly, or you'll catch a cold."

Bai Xiaoyue roared inwardly, "Drinking leads to trouble! The ancients were right!"

Why don't I feel anything? Could it be because I've had a baby? Sigh...

How do we handle this drunken sexual misconduct?

Bai Xiaoyue was somewhat at a loss, and said awkwardly:

"Yan Ci, we're both adults, this isn't a big deal where we're from, right?"

Yan Ci looked at her with the eyes one would use to look at a faithless man, without saying a word.

Bai Xiaoyue felt uneasy being stared at by Yan Ci.

He cleared his throat awkwardly and continued, "Yan Ci, you're a man, so you haven't lost anything."

Yan Ci said coldly, "This is my first time in two lifetimes, and you say there's no loss?"

Bai Xiaoyue gave up struggling and said helplessly:

"So what do you want to do?"

"I only sleep with my wife. You have to take responsibility for me. Let's go register our marriage."

Yan Ci thought to himself, "Now that we've got the marriage certificate, we're protected by law. Let's see where you can run off to."

Bai Xiaoyue asked, puzzled, "Didn't we get married? Everyone knows that."

Yan Ci glared at her fiercely: "You have a problem with that?"

Yan Ci's gaze was terrifying, and Bai Xiaoyue chickened out, quickly stating, "No, no objection."

Seeing that she agreed, Yan Ci went to cook dumplings with satisfaction, while Bai Xiaoyue prepared candy, melon seeds, hazelnuts, and red envelopes.

The first day of the Lunar New Year was lively and bustling. On the second day, they went back to the Bai family for a meal. On the third day, Bai Xiaoyue, oblivious to everything else, started writing again.

Bai Wen'an was going back to school on the sixteenth day of the first lunar month, and Bai Xiaoyue felt that another half month had passed.

She looked at the huge stack of manuscripts she had written and decided to give her brain a rest.

Bai Xiaoyue wanted to take Bai Wen'an to the county town and do some sightseeing while she was there. Yan Ci saw that she wanted to go out and have fun, so he insisted on going with her.

After they delivered the large and small packages to Wen An and put him on the bus to the provincial capital, Yan Ci patiently accompanied Bai Xiaoyue to walk around and look at the sights.

It was cold, and there weren't many people on the street. Before long, Bai Xiaoyue lost interest and wanted to go home.

Yan Ci kept walking forward. He stopped in front of a photo studio and said to Bai Xiaoyue, "Xiaoyue, let's take a picture?"

Bai Xiaoyue was somewhat tempted by the 1962 photo, so she followed Yan Ci into the photo studio.

There was only one experienced photographer in the studio, and no other customers. He was very hospitable to the two of them.

"Are you two taking a photo? Individual or group photo?"

Yan Ci used the phrase "group photo" sparingly.

Bai Xiaoyue opened her eyes wide, wanting to refute, but after looking at Yan Ci's expression, she didn't dare to, and could only obediently cooperate.

She figured that taking pictures with a handsome man wouldn't be a loss for her, so she ended up taking a solo photo as well.

After leaving the photo studio, it was time for the two to go home. Yan Ci then took her to the Daqiao Commune, leaving Bai Xiaoyue completely confused.

She was still in a daze when she saw the marriage certificate in her hand.

She didn't know when Yan Ci obtained the marriage certificate, and why the process seemed so familiar.

It felt like he had been here many times before; after the certificate was issued, he even gave the staff some wedding candy.

As they walked out the door, Bai Xiaoyue pinched Yan Ci:

Why didn't you say you were coming to get your marriage certificate today?

Yan Ci carefully put away the marriage certificate before slowly and deliberately answering:

"It's just a coincidence, and besides, you already agreed."

Bai Xiaoyue ignored him and walked ahead angrily. By the time the two arrived at their destination, the oxcart had already left.
