Chapter 36 Plant a tree and get five potato spirits

On the way back to the village, Qin Chengrui had a gloomy face, frowned, and stared into the distance with his eyes, as if he was worried about someone, or angry about something. When I looked at him again, it seemed that nothing had happened.

Qin Chengrui was indeed worried. General Chen was treated like this, and he didn't know what had become of that short but powerful man. When his father passed away, he told him that he must protect him.

The carriage rattled along the road, and Qin Chengrui's thoughts fluctuated. He was going to visit Old Chen tonight; his leg was probably broken.

Qin Chengrui and Qin Feng spent the whole afternoon in the study talking about things, and only came out for dinner. When they came back in the afternoon, Qin Chengrui asked Li Shuwan to make more delicious food, as he was going to visit his old boss in the cowshed that night.

Li Shuwan prepared a rather sumptuous dinner: lamb ribs and carrot soup, hot and sour potato shreds, mashed potatoes with tomato sauce, braised pork, potato slices with green peppers, stir-fried fish with potato noodles and vegetables, eggplant and green beans with minced garlic, scrambled eggs with leeks, and stir-fried cowpeas. There were eight dishes and one soup, and the portions were generous. Li Shuwan divided the dishes into smaller portions and placed them on the stove to heat them up. She also packed a dozen pancakes and a dozen steamed buns made of two-grain flour.

It was dark. Qin Chengrui, carrying a basket, and Qin Feng, carrying half a bag of brown rice, took a small path to the cowshed, avoiding people. As they approached, they could smell a foul odor. The cowshed had been in disrepair for a long time, with cracks and holes in it. If winter came, they would definitely be freezing.

Qin Chengrui thought to himself that he would go to the village chief tomorrow and talk about this matter. These people were sent here by higher authorities for labor reform. If someone died, not only would they fail to complete the task, but they would also be criticized. Who knows, they might not even be selected as an outstanding village in the commune this year. That's right.

The two men stood in front of the dilapidated cave dwelling and gently knocked on the door. A voice called out, "Come in." Pushing the door open, they saw a large earthen kang (a bed) with five people lying on it. Old Chen lay on the kang, his face pale and his calves bandaged. His eyes were now closed, his cheeks flushed, a sign of a fever. The young man who had been with Old Chen at the train station sat nearby, anxiously watching him, bewildered.

Qin Chengrui stepped forward and touched Elder Chen's head. Indeed, he had a severe fever. "Don't you have any medicine?" Qin Chengrui asked the young man. "No, everyone was searched when they arrived. I kept giving him water."

Qin Feng said to Qin Chengrui, "I'll go back home to get some medicine. If you don't take the medicine to reduce your fever, your brain will be damaged." Qin Chengrui handed the basket in his hand to the young man, "Invite everyone to eat something. If you can't finish it, put it away and eat it tomorrow." The young man's eyes were wet, "Thank you. I'll tell the chief when he wakes up." The other people got up one after another. These people all had scars on their bodies. When everyone was talking nonsense, Qin Feng came in carrying Ke'er.

Qin Chengrui saw it and glared at Qin Feng. "Why did you bring Ke'er here? It's dark." Ke'er made a face at Qin Chengrui on Qin Feng's back. "I came to see General Chen."

Ke'er jumped off the back and walked to General Chen. Hu Bao began to direct Ke'er in the space to treat General Chen. Half an hour later, General Chen's complexion improved. His calf was fractured. Ke'er followed the method instructed by Hu to clean the wound, set the bone, suture, fix and bandage it in one go.

At this time, a tall and thin man in his 40s came over and said, "Little kid, who taught you this medical skill? It's really good."

A joyful voice rang out, "Chief, are you awake? Are you hungry or thirsty?" "Chief, how did you get here?" Chen Liefeng coughed a few times and said nothing. The young man said, "It's the Xu family's doing. Somehow, some letters with inappropriate remarks were found in the chief's home, and then..." A hoarse voice rang out, "Qin Chengrui, why are you here? Remember that your hometown is here, right?" "Indeed, it is here,"

After a few brief conversations, Chen Liefeng sent them away, "Go back now. Don't come here again. Qin Chengrui, return to the team as soon as possible."

The next day, Qin Feng's family was going to plant jujube trees on Daqing Mountain. Early in the morning, Qin Feng went to the village chief and told him he needed some villagers to help him plant a tree and intercrop peanuts. He would reward them with five potato spirits. He wanted to see if anyone would go to Daqing Mountain to help. It was the off-season for farming these days, so once the village chief mentioned the need for help planting trees, more than a dozen people said they wanted to go to Daqing Mountain to plant trees.

Qin Feng plans to plant jujube trees on the Daqing Mountain and intercrop peanuts in the fields, so as to harvest two crops from one place. The climate on the Daqing Mountain is dry and the damage caused by wind and sand is serious. Intercropping jujube trees and peanuts has obvious advantages. The reason for choosing to plant jujube trees is that jujube trees are highly drought-resistant, have small and sparse leaves, and can tolerate extensive management. They have many advantages for intercropping.

Qin Feng explained the planting method and requirements to the villagers: With 400cm spacing between jujube trees, plant two rows of peanuts between each row, with two peanuts per hole, and leave 145cm between the peanuts and the jujube trees. The jujube trees were planted on Daqing Mountain by Ke'er last night. Where did the jujube seedlings come from? They were cultivated in the Hubao Space. Products from the space are guaranteed to be top-notch; every jujube seedling has strong roots and straight shoots—perfect!

When the villagers reached Daqing Mountain, they each kept their distance. Qin Feng placed the jujube saplings in suitable locations and began digging holes to plant the trees. At noon, Li Shuwan and Ke'er brought food up the mountain. The staple food was potato rice, enough to fill you up, shredded potatoes with green peppers, braised potato cubes, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and a bucket of egg drop soup.

Seven days later, thanks to Ke'er's intervention with the Tiger Heart, the jujube saplings planted on Daqing Mountain were growing robustly amidst the gusty wind and sand. Peanuts interplanted in the jujube fields had already sprouted, demonstrating a resounding success. Early management required meticulous care. Qin Muzhou and his men said they would be responsible for the subsequent management of the forest.

Qin Feng's family's method of intercropping trees and crops was refreshing. Everyone was concerned about whether the trees could survive, so they went up the mountain to check from time to time. As a result, there were people going up the mountain to check almost every day.

Another half a month passed, and the jujube trees on the Daqing Mountain had taken deep roots. The small green leaves grew densely, and the interplanted peanuts also grew taller. The green leaves sparkled in the sun.

During dinner, Qin Feng said, "I've already told the village chief about the approval document from County Magistrate Tang for the construction of the village breeding farm. He's very happy. We've already chosen a site, and we'll start construction in the next two days." Ke'er rolled her eyes a few times before saying to Qin Feng, "I have the design drawings for the pigpen here. Dad, you have to convince the village chief to build it according to these drawings. It's so clean and hygienic that you can't even sweep it clean."
