At noon, Ke'er ate the sweet potato shoots she had picked herself. Li Shuwan cooked garlic-flavored sweet potato shoots, sweet potato rice, braised pork, eggplant with chili beans, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes. The portions were generous, and a portion was sent to the cowshed, where the whole family devoured them. Xiao Si said, "Sister, go pick some sweet potato shoots tomorrow. Mom's fried ones are so delicious."
"Okay, pick some more sweet potato sprouts tomorrow and have Mom stir-fry them."
After lunch, everyone sat in the courtyard to enjoy the cool air and chat. They heard the sound of car horns outside the courtyard. Qin Feng stood up and prepared to open the door to see who was coming. The door was pushed open and it was County Magistrate Tang's secretary. As soon as he came in, he said to Qin Chengrui, "Captain Qin, your troops called our office and asked you to return immediately. County Magistrate Tang has already bought you a train ticket for 8 o'clock in the evening. Do you want to leave with me now or wait?"
Qin Chengrui thought for a moment and said, "Thank you. I'll go to the train station this afternoon and thank County Magistrate Tang for me."
The secretary handed Qin Chengrui a train ticket. "You're welcome. I'm leaving now. Goodbye."
After seeing off County Magistrate Tang's secretary, everyone returned to the courtyard in silence for a while. After a while, Qin Feng said to Li Shuwan, "Wan'er, go prepare some dry food." Ke'er hurried into the kitchen with Li Shuwan. With a wave of her hand, Ke'er brought out four cans of spicy beef sauce, sesame cakes, hard-boiled eggs, and three pieces of braised beef.
He quickly prepared a pack of medicine for trauma, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other medicines that could be used during missions for his uncle. He called his uncle to check his leg. Qin Chengrui watched the four-year-old little adult skillfully clean the wound, apply medicine, and bandage it. He patted her little head and said, "Ke'er, after your uncle is gone, you must take good care of your baby. Don't let anyone find your baby, understand? Otherwise, Ke'er will suffer, and your uncle will be heartbroken."
Ke'er walked up to Qin Chengrui and hugged him, shedding tears in his arms and replied in a dull voice, "Well, I know, I will protect myself. You are in the army and too far away from us. You must take care of yourself."
Qin Chengrui held Ke'er in his arms, rubbing her furry little head with his big hands. He thought of his father and his elder brother... You all left so early and didn't see how well-behaved, cute and capable our Ke'er is.
"Ke'er, Grandpa Uncle has agreed with Grandpa Sharon in the cowshed that you should go and learn Chinese medicine from him to help him out of his suffering. His family has cut ties with him and gone abroad, leaving him alone. He offended someone in Kyoto and came here. Our Ke'er is so cute and smart, she will definitely bring Grandpa Sharon out, right?" "Got it, Grandpa Uncle, don't worry, I will."
Li Shuwan quickly prepared dinner, thinking that after Qin Chengrui had dinner, Qin Feng would drive the carriage to take him to the train station.
She quickly cooked a pot of millet porridge, baked a basket of scallion pancakes, and fried a few side dishes. She brought the food to the table and invited everyone to eat. Everyone sat at the table, picked up their bowls, and sipped the porridge. Qin Chengrui saw that everyone was silent and didn't say anything, so he said, "I will return to the team after my injury is healed. It's just a matter of leaving early or late. Qin Feng, take good care of Shuwan and the children at home. Don't go around in the next few years. If you have nothing to do, stay in the village. If you have something to do, go to the county town to see County Magistrate Tang. All the children must study hard. The cultural knowledge they learn is theirs, and no one can take it away."
He picked up the bowl and drank a mouthful of rice porridge, looked at Zhou Jinyan and asked him, "Zhou Jinyan, are you sure you don't want to go to the army with me?"
Zhou Jinyan said with a firm look in his eyes, "I'm sure. I'm at Uncle Qin's house. When I grow up, I'll come find you and join the army."
Qin Chengrui raised his hand and rubbed his head. "Okay, you must study hard and learn well. When you join the army, you must be a knowledgeable and cultured soldier. If you have anything to say to me, just write to me. Remember?"
Zhou Jinyan nodded with red eyes, "Yes, I remember it."
Qin Chengrui said to Qin Feng, "You should always keep an eye on the cowshed. General Chen is old, and I'm afraid that group in the capital will come to harass him again one day. I hope that he can spend these turbulent years in peace and quiet in this small mountain village."
Ke'er thought, "For three years, he won't even think about this person being here. He'll just think this old man is living a miserable life in a labor camp."
"I understand. I will protect him." Qin Feng said to his uncle.
"Uncle, you have to take care of yourself. You are my only relative. When you rush forward, think about us at home. We just want you to live well." After saying that, she couldn't stop crying.
Qin Chengrui's eyes also turned red as he patted Qin Feng's head. Qin Feng rubbed his body in his warm big palm and wiped his eyes. "Uncle, my mother is waiting for you at home. You must remember to go home. I will write to you often."
"Okay, I'll go home when I have a holiday."
Even a good banquet has to end. Qin Chengrui carried a bag of food and a bag of clothes, shoes and socks made for him by Li Shuwan, got on the carriage, waved to his family standing in front of the courtyard gate, and said, "Go in, I'm leaving. I'll be back when I have a holiday."
Uncle Grandpa left and returned to the army, but Qin Feng's family had to continue to manage Xiaoqingshan and Daqingshan.
Early in the morning, the family went up to Daqing Mountain and prepared to plant sunflowers on the hillside where the soil was thin and the sand was thick. Qin Muzhou borrowed a book about sand control and soil improvement from a teacher at the county agricultural school. The sandy soil conditions described in the book were similar to those in Daqing Mountain, so sunflowers could be planted to gradually improve the soil environmental quality.
Sunflowers are hardy, easy-to-grow annuals that can grow just about anywhere, and their seeds can be harvested and enjoyed as a delicious food.
