Chapter 45: Big Brother is Going to the Army

Choudan and his mother Han Yanzi have been working on the Daqing Mountain for more than ten days. During these ten days, they have eaten three meals a day on the Daqing Mountain. Originally, they were asked to go to Qin Feng's house to eat, but Han Yanzi insisted on not going to Qin Feng's house. Li Shuwan understood that although it was the 1960s, a widowed woman would still attract gossip if she went to someone else's house.

Therefore, three meals a day were sent to Daqing Mountain by Li Shuwan and Xiao Si, or Ke'er. The mother and daughter could eat their fill every day, and their complexion had improved a lot, and they felt more energetic. Both of them were hardworking people, and they wished they could stay on the mountain all day to take care of the chicks. They were not afraid of the sun and would rest on a piece of sack under several red willow trees.

After discovering the situation, Ke'er climbed up Daqing Mountain at night. She built a small house next to the red willow nest. She first drove arm-thick wooden stakes into the ground to form the shape of the house. Then, she placed an S-shaped pattern between the stakes, wrapped dry vines around them, and pressed them down tightly with force. She used the same method for the roof, only with a skylight. Ke'er installed a glass pane, then inlaid a large metal frame with horizontal and vertical grids around the glass. Finally, she covered the entire structure with a mixture of mud and chopped grass, plastering it several times.

This room is divided into two rooms, the inner room is small and has only an earthen kang, which cannot be used for burning fire. Ke'er cut wooden sticks into one-meter lengths, hammered them into the soil, and arranged them into the shape of an earthen kang. The middle is filled with stones and sand, and a layer of wooden boards is placed on top. Then, a thick layer of straw and mud is smeared on the wooden boards. In the outer room, there is a large stone with a flat surface, and several wooden blocks are placed on the side.

With a wave of her hand, the room and the kang were clean and dry. She then spread a straw mat on the kang, and on top of that, an old sheet, two mattresses, and two thin sheets. They could live in it tomorrow. This way, Ugly Egg and his mother wouldn't have to be exposed to the scorching sun.

After thinking about it, he built a shed outside, dug an earthen stove under the shed, and put an iron pot in it to boil water for drinking. He walked into the house and placed a kettle, wooden basin, bucket, bowls, plates and chopsticks on the stone table.

Standing in the moonlight, Ke'er saw her masterpiece, hmm, perfect!

Oh, no way, never mind, that's daddy's business, I'm still a child, go home and sleep. "Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh" I got home and got on the kang, and fell asleep in seconds.

At noon, the village committee loudspeaker called Qin Feng to go to the village committee and wait for a call. Qin Feng immediately got up and went to the village committee, followed by a group of children. The first one to follow was Ke'er. She was holding Xiao Si's hand and jogging after Qin Feng to the village committee. Qin Feng looked back and saw a group of radish-headed children panting and looking at him. "Why are you running so fast? Sit down and have a rest."

"Ding-ling-ling." The phone rang. The village chief motioned Qin Feng to answer the phone, then walked out of the office and waited in the yard.

"Qin Feng, I'm your uncle. Please send Qin Muze to the army. I'll give you the address. Please write it down."

Ke'er quickly handed over a pen and paper. Qin Muzhe took it and looked at Qin Feng. Qin Feng listened and talked while Qin Muzhe took notes.

"Uncle, are you okay? Does your leg hurt? You must be careful when you train for missions. We all want you to be healthy and safe."

"I'm fine, I'm doing fine. Are you all okay? Is anyone causing trouble? Is Mr. Chen okay? Is little Jinyan used to being at home?"

Qin Feng answered them one by one, and told Qin Chengrui that Zhou Jinyan was Mr. Chen's grandson and had moved to the cowshed to live with his grandfather.

Qin Chengrui was silent on the phone for a long while. "That's good. Having a relative around is also a spiritual support. You should take better care of him." He then said, "Qin Feng, there is still a spot available for you to join the army with Qin Muze. I want the 16-year-old Qin Zaijiang, the second son of the village chief's family, to join the army. One reason is that the village chief is our relative, and the other is to find a helper for Qin Muze."

"Okay, uncle, you've thought it through. I'll do as you say. I'll tell the village chief right away."

"Okay, go ahead and tell him. Let Ke'er answer the phone."

Ke'er, who was waiting nearby, picked up the phone when she heard her name. "Uncle, how are you? Does your leg still hurt? Have you gone to the army to see a doctor for a checkup? Can't you use all your strength during training? You still have to go on a mission in the army recently, right? Our whole family is fine. The crops and trees planted in Daqingshan and Xiaoqingshan are growing well. Don't worry, take care of yourself. We'll wait for you to come home safely."

Listening to Ke'er's endless caring words like a little adult, Qin Chengrui's heart was instantly filled with warmth. "I'm fine. I'm relieved that you are all well at home. Don't go outside the village unless necessary. Stay in the village and don't talk to strangers. If there are strangers in the village, tell your father immediately and keep an eye on Xiao Si."

Xiao Si was anxious when he heard this. "Uncle, I'm your older brother. I will take good care of my sister and won't lose her. Uncle, I miss you. When will you come home? Mommy will make you mutton pilaf. It's delicious."

The village chief strode in with a red face. Ke'er quickly handed the phone to him. "Uncle Chengrui, thank you. I thank you on behalf of my second son. I'll kill a chicken for you when you come back. Please take care of Qin Zaijiang in the army."

"You're welcome. As for the specific procedures, just ask Zaijiang to go with Qin Feng."

"Okay, okay, I understand. Thank you."

Qin Feng picked up the phone and asked, "Uncle, is there anything else?"

"No more, hang up."

"Goodbye, uncle." "Goodbye, grandpa uncle!" The children said goodbye loudly into the microphone.

The family walked back happily. Ke'er held Li Shuwan's hand and said, "Mom, let's make dumplings tonight. Tomorrow morning, my brother will go to the train station to take the train to the army."
