Chapter 688: Making Dumplings for the New Year

"Don't you have a skipping rope? Starting tomorrow, jump at home, once every two hours, for a quarter of an hour each time. I guarantee that you will feel like you're alive every day." Gu Mingjing suggested.

"I don't want to jump." Jian Shu lay back, leaning against the pillow, holding a furry little duck doll in his hands, and his face was full of laziness.

Gu Mingjing looked up in frustration, "Who said a few days ago that if you eat and sleep all day at home, you'll gain weight? Won't you get fat if you move around?"

Jianshu struggled for a moment, thinking about skipping rope to lose weight, but after thinking about it, he decided to give up. "Forget it, I'll just gain weight. Being able to gain weight is a skill."

As for losing weight, I'll wait until next year. Spring is the perfect time to lose weight. In the winter, I'm bundled up like a bear, unable to even jump. It's so tiring.

Gu Mingjing: "..." Why does his wife stay so quiet every winter? She's not like this at other times.

After failing again, Gu Mingjing reflected seriously and decided to try again next time.

In the following days, just as Gu Mingjing had said, heavy snow fell continuously and the sky was gloomy. It was dark before dinner time.

Fortunately, everything necessary was ready at home, so Jianshu could stay in bed comfortably every day. Only Gu Mingjing had to get up early and go to get off work in the dark every day. It could be said that he hadn't seen the scenery on the road for a long time. After all, it was pitch black and he couldn't see anything.

I have to say that every time Gu Mingjing got up, Jianshu felt pretty good while curled up in bed. However, when he thought that he would be in the same situation in a few years, he didn't feel so good anymore.

The snow kept falling day after day, and Jianshu had to go out and sweep the snow every day when it was lighter, otherwise it would pile up so much that the door wouldn't open. She couldn't help but laugh when she imagined Gu Mingjing coming home at night to find the door sealed and having to sweep the snow in the dark.

While I was enjoying myself on Jianshu, time quickly passed and it was New Year's Eve.

Every household got up early, washed and brushed their teeth, then took a shower and changed into new clothes. New couplets were posted outside the door and red lanterns were hung. A touch of red appeared in the snow, like a flame appearing in the cold winter, and the world became warmer.

Gu Mingjing didn't go home at noon, wanting to celebrate the Lunar New Year with the soldiers in the cafeteria. Jianshu was too lazy to bother, as the big dinner was in the evening. It just so happened that Wu Xiufang from next door had invited her, and Captain Zhao had also gone to the army to celebrate the Lunar New Year, leaving only the mother and son at home.

Jianshu agreed without much thought, picked up a pound of fried dough twist and went next door.

Two adults and four children had a lively meal together. It is worth mentioning that most of the meals were prepared by the children together.

Wu Xiufang had wanted to cook two meals for the children herself during the Lunar New Year holiday, but was rejected. Yaya said she wanted her mother to taste the food they cooked, which touched Wu Xiufang so much that she kept calling them "good children" and "sensible children". She also thanked Jianshu repeatedly, saying that it was all thanks to her.

I won't go into detail about the deep affection between mother and son. Anyway, the dishes were served in the end. As for how they tasted, that's not important. Was Wu Xiufang eating the dishes? She was eating the filial piety of her children.

After dinner, Jianshu did not interrupt the mother and son's conversation and left early on the pretext that he had something to do at home.

It was normal to have a lot of things to do at home during the Chinese New Year, so Wu Xiufang didn't stay long. Only that brat Tiedan said he would come to pay New Year's greetings tomorrow, and asked Jianshu to get up early and not lie in bed, leaving him outside in the cold wind.

Jianshu was so angry that he gritted his teeth and wished he could turn back and cover the boy's broken mouth.

Humph! She was just going to stay in bed and let him blow the cold wind outside!

When Gu Mingjing came back from his place, she was still looking angry.

Gu Mingjing asked the reason out of curiosity. After learning what happened, he couldn't help laughing out loud and soon received a protesting look from Jianshu.

"Ahem, that kid has really gone too far. We can't let him off so easily. Wife, I'll do whatever you say!" Gu Mingjing coughed twice and said indignantly.

"Hmph, that's pretty good!" Jian Shu raised his chin, feeling a lot more comfortable.

Seeing that she had calmed down, Gu Mingjing quickly changed the subject, fearing that he would get into trouble again. "Wife, what kind of dumplings shall we eat tonight?"

Speaking of food, Jianshu quickly forgot what he had just done. "Beef filling, right? We haven't tried that yet. There's also celery and meat filling. Didn't you say you wanted to eat that before?"

"Pack some more shrimps. I asked a comrade-in-arms to help send some seafood. It should arrive after the New Year." His wife likes this. They are not close to the sea, but fortunately he knows a lot of people, some of whom live by the sea.

Hearing that more seafood would be arriving soon, Jianshu no longer felt reluctant to eat the remaining shrimp and happily agreed to his suggestion. "Okay, then, let's make some more shrimp dumplings. You go and mix the dough, and I'll make the filling."

"Okay." Gu Mingjing nodded, found the special basin for kneading dough, and began to prepare the dough.

Jianshu found the raw materials from the space and started preparing them one by one.

One person rolled out the wrappers while the other wrapped the dumplings, and they worked together quickly. As the dumplings piled up, the tables and chairs were filled with all sorts of dumplings, enough to last for a long time.

Although there were only two of them eating the New Year's Eve dinner, it was very sumptuously prepared.

Steamed sea bass, steamed pork with rice flour, stewed chicken with mushrooms, braised pork with preserved vegetables, stewed beef brisket with radish, seafood stew, stir-fried spinach, braised food platter, steamed pumpkin with glutinous rice, pork ribs and lotus root soup.

The staple food is the dumplings made in the afternoon. Of course, although the steamed pumpkin with glutinous rice is a dessert, it can also be considered a staple food.

Since there were no outsiders around, the two of them didn't have to worry too much and simply carried the table into the room. They sat on the bed, covered with the quilt, eating, drinking, chatting and laughing. Although it wasn't as lively as a crowd, it was still very warm.

The New Year's Eve dinner lasted until after ten o'clock in the evening. The portions were too large. Even though the two of them tried their best to eat, there were still many dishes left, and they had food for the next few days.

At midnight, Gu Mingjing lit firecrackers. Amid the sound of the firecrackers, the two of them wished each other a Happy New Year.

In the new year, they will also work together to welcome a new life and a new family.
