Wang Xiang and Sun Shangwu returned to the machinery factory at noon and had lunch in the cafeteria.
When it was time to go to work in the afternoon, the two went to the factory director's office immediately to report their investigation results.
"I'll report back later. First, go call the two deputy factory directors over and let them listen together.
Zhang Shuguang is the darling of the machinery factory, and whether he stays or leaves, let them know. "
The senior management's office areas were all together, and soon, the two deputy factory directors also came over.
"Comrade Wang Xiang, you can speak now."
After everyone was seated, Sun Zhigang signaled Wang Xiang to tell him the results of their investigation.
"After investigation and questioning by Section Chief Sun and I, we can confirm that the anonymous complaint is basically true.
Zhang Shuguang, a native of Zhangzhuang, Liulin Commune, had a father who was a battalion commander stationed in southern Xinjiang. Three years ago, without any warning, he suddenly defected to northern Myanmar.
The matter had been concluded and almost everyone in the commune knew about it, so Wang Xiang did not try to hide it.
"Three leaders, there's something very strange. After the news came back, the commune held a meeting to study and decide to strip Zhang Xiangnan's family of their status as poor peasants and their honors as military dependents, but the troops stationed in southern Xinjiang suppressed the decision."
Sun Shangwu quickly added.
He wanted to tell the three factory managers that no matter how Zhang Shuguang was dealt with, the joint liability between him and Wang Xiang was not great.
"What do you say?"
Sun Zhigang looked at his two deputies.
"Director Sun, now that we've thoroughly investigated everything, we can't keep Zhang Shuguang here any longer."
"Director Sun, I mean the same thing as Deputy Director Li. Zhang Shuguang has some connections and can get us some meat, but we can't go against the policy just for a bite of food!"
In the minds of the two deputy factory directors, the matter had been finalized. In the morning they called him Comrade Xiao Zhang, and in the afternoon he became Zhang Shuguang.
"Don't jump to conclusions yet. Something's not right about this."
Through the descriptions of Wang Xiang and Sun Shangwu, Sun Zhigang directly grasped the key points.
He is a military-to-civilian cadre who has spent half his life in the army. He knows the army's style better than anyone else and knows better than anyone how much soldiers hate traitors.
They say that considering Zhang Xiangnan's previous military achievements, there is no need to kill his family members. These are just excuses. There must be something hidden behind it.
"Let me make a phone call first."
It just so happened that if Zhang Xiangnan had served in other units, it would have been difficult for Sun Zhigang to verify it.
The troops stationed in southern Xinjiang were the same team that Sun Zhigang had served in before.
Time passed minute by minute, and after many connections, Sun Zhigang finally got the call to his old boss.
"Hello, old chief, I'm Zhigang!"
Although there was no face-to-face communication, Sun Zhigang still stood up respectfully.
First, there was a round of greetings, in which he asked about the old leader's health, and then he reported on his recent work achievements. Finally, Sun Zhigang turned the question to Zhang Xiangnan.
"Old leader, there is a young worker in our factory who is capable and I am optimistic about him.
But something unexpected happened today. Someone wrote an anonymous letter of accusation, saying that he was the son of a traitor and that his father Zhang Xiangnan was a traitor who fled to northern Myanmar.
After all, I was from the 79th Army, and I was afraid I might make a mistake and wrongly accuse the children of my comrades, so I thought of calling and asking.
After Sun Zhigang finished asking, the two deputy factory directors, Wang Xiang and Sun Shangwu all pricked up their ears, waiting to hear the news.
There was silence on the other end of the phone, probably because the old leader was hesitating about what to say.
"Zhigang, I can't say more. I only have one request of you: protect this child at all costs. If you can't bear the pressure, contact me."
After hanging up the phone, the old leader who was far away in southern Xinjiang had a face full of guilt.
"Xiangnan, I'm sorry that your family has suffered these past few years. When you return home after achieving your goals, I will personally accompany you back to your hometown to clear your name and reward you."
Three years ago, he, the political commissar and the chief of staff had discussed whether to announce Zhang Xiangnan's defection or his sacrifice.
If he is declared a martyr, his family is given generous treatment and some pension, their life will definitely be much better.
But there are also disadvantages to doing so. No one can guarantee whether there are any remnants of northern Myanmar in Dongfeng County.
If Zhang Xiangnan's family is treated too well, Zhang Xiangnan may not be trusted in northern Myanmar, and may even be in danger.
Another point is that if Zhang Xiangnan is directly declared dead, what if his wife loses hope and remarries, waiting for Zhang Xiangnan to return with honor?
How can a person who has made great contributions to the country explain to others how he ended up with his wife and children separated from him?
"Did you all hear that? I told you there must be something hidden. Okay, everyone, go about yourselves and pretend this never happened."
Sun Zhigang was in a good mood and waved to the four people present.
"Great! As long as Comrade Xiao Zhang is okay, we can still have meat to eat in the future."
"Of course, all the comrades working in the government envy our food!"
With the factory director's old leader personally endorsing the letter, the few people felt unprecedentedly relaxed and left Sun Zhigang's office chatting and laughing.
"Section Chief Sun, please do me a favor and check the workers' files to see if there are any workers from Zhangzhuang."
Because of an anonymous letter of accusation, he was nervous all day long. Regardless of whether he would take revenge, he had to find out who the bad guy was.
"Okay, I'll investigate even if you don't tell me. If anything happens to Comrade Xiao Zhang, we'll both be considered dereliction of duty. I don't know which grandson has so much free time."
