Chapter 8
After staying at home for two days, school started.
Xu Di packed his schoolbag. There was not much to pack except a pencil case, which was made of tin and was flat. It was inherited from his sister Xu Mei and was covered with rust. He didn't know how many years it had been used.
Xu Di looked at himself. He was wearing dark blue pants, a short-sleeved shirt with floral patterns, a green shoulder bag that had been washed to a pale color, and cloth shoes made by his grandmother.
In my previous life, I saw an actress in her forties wearing two pigtails and playing an eighteen-year-old girl. She was criticized for looking like an old cucumber painted green to look young.
Xu Di looked at her two dark pigtails in the palm-sized mirror. She looked so young!
"Xu Di, what did you do during your summer vacation?"
Following my memory as I walked into the classroom, another girl with two pigtails called out to Xu Di enthusiastically.
Xu Di knew that this was her deskmate Yang Dani, who was one year younger than her.
"Yang Dani, I went to my grandmother's house in the countryside during the summer vacation and started working."
"That's great! I also want to go to the countryside, to the vast world of the countryside, and do something!"
Xu Di looked at the innocent children and thought about those students struggling in the countryside, and didn't know what to say.
At this time, the mainstream idea was to respond to the call and go to the countryside to work. Xu Di didn't dare to sing a different tune in public, because the Little Red Guards were everywhere.
After a while, the teacher came and prepared to start class without saying anything.
Xu Di and her classmates went to a school for children of a machinery factory. They went straight home after school at noon, which was not far away.
Here, Xu Di was sitting in the classroom again after more than 20 years, and it was quite novel.
Over there, little Liang Ankang was finally able to be discharged from the hospital.
"Lan Zi, is Kang Kang okay?"
"Aunt Qian, everything is fine. Everything is fine. Did you go shopping for groceries?"
"Yeah, I went to buy some groceries. I can't eat much by myself, so I can't not eat."
Aunt Qian is the former chairperson of the Women’s Federation. When she was young, she organized women to make shoes for the Red Army and provide cover for them. She also served as a liaison officer and medical worker.
The revolution is like a brick, and we can move it wherever it is needed.
Later, everything was over and the country was established. Aunt Qian has been working for the Women's Federation and was the chairman of the Women's Federation before her retirement.
"Chaoyang hasn't been back for a while, right?"
"That's right. It's been almost a year. I'm already in my twenties and I don't even think about finding a partner. I just keep training."
Aunt Qian talked to Wang Lan for a while. Knowing that she had just returned from the hospital, she didn't say much and told her to go home quickly.
Wang Lan thought about Aunt Qian. Alas, every family has its own problems.
"Mom, Liang Bo just called. He will be home tomorrow."
"Really? That's great. Let's go to Xu's house together and thank Xu Di for saving our lives."
"Well, I have to thank you very much. That child is good and I like him."
Yan Fangfang was speaking from the heart. After working for so many years, she could more or less understand some people and things.
The Liang family came after dinner. All four of them came.
"Sister Wang, look at how polite you are. You brought so much food and supplies. This is just a coincidence for Xu Di. It's also a blessing for Kang Kang."
Mother Xu felt a little embarrassed when she saw the Liang family members coming in with big and small bags.
"Xu Di saved Kang Kang, which is a great favor to us. Let's visit each other more often in the future. We hope we can get along well with Xu Di."
Ever since Wang Lan entered the Xu family, she saw how happy and honest the family was, and she really wanted to visit them more often.
She believed in fate and felt that Xu Di was the benefactor of her family's health.
"Since elder sister said so, we should visit each other more often and treat each other as relatives."
The Xu family, Father Xu and Elder Brother Xu are taciturn, and Sister-in-law Xu is carefree, but they were intimidated by the aura of the Liang family and did not dare to come forward.
"Auntie Wang, Sister Yan, how is Kang Kang? Are you still scared?"
"I'm not scared anymore. Since I was discharged from the hospital, I've been telling everyone I meet that he went to fight monsters with an older sister. He's a great hero."
Yan Fangfang currently has only this one son, who she treats as the apple of her eye.
The more he looked at Xu Di, the more he liked him because he saved his son and coaxed his son into not being afraid.
"That's good. Children forget things quickly. After a while, they really won't be scared anymore."
In her previous life, Xu Di went through everything from pregnancy to childbirth, and then to her child's graduation from high school. She was alone and had a lot of experience.
"That's great. I was worried that he would remember it again in a few days."
Yan Fangfang didn't even think about it, how could Xu Di, a girl in her teens, know so much about children. She was convinced from the bottom of her heart and believed what Xu Di said.
The Liang family didn't stay for too long. They left their home address and phone number, told Xu Di to move around more, and then took the children back.
"Mom, we have free time on Saturday afternoon. They are going to attend a struggle session, and I don't want to go. It just so happens that Aunt Wang and the others brought so much food. I'll bring some to Grandpa and Grandma."
"Okay, you decide. These things were originally given to you by others."
Mother Xu waved her hand and told Xu Di to put the things away and let her use them however she pleased.
After all, this time, the second daughter suffered a great crime.
Xu Di looked at the two large net bags filled with food and daily necessities. She gave the milk powder to her nephew, the cigarettes to Xu's father, and the canned food to Xu Jun, asking him to open it and eat together.
Peach cakes, biscuits, malted milk, canned fish, canned meat, floral fabrics, hair bands...
Xu Di picked out some food for her mother and took the rest into her room, thinking that she would take some back when she visited her grandparents on Saturday.
Xu Di mainly wanted to go to her grandfather's house to get some seeds, as her space was still empty.
On Saturday noon, Xu Di came home from school and started packing.
There is a shuttle bus to my grandfather's house, three times a day, morning, noon and evening, and the fare is one cent.
"Second sister, second sister, when you go to grandpa's house, take me with you."
Xu Jun ran back panting, fearing that his second sister was gone.
"It's not impossible to take you there."
"But you have conditions."
Xu Jun knew that his second sister had something else to say.
"You have to listen to me and not run around."
"No problem. I'll be a puppy if I can't do it."
Xu Jun swore that his second sister would beat people up.
"Humph, think it through. If you can't do it, I'll beat you like a puppy."
Xu Di picked up the cloth bag, locked the door, and took Xu Jun with him, each of them holding a steamed bun in their hands. The shuttle bus is about to leave, so there is no time to eat at home.
Xu's mother talked to Xu Di yesterday and asked her to take care of Xu Jun because she was working the night shift these two days and had no time to take care of him.
The brother and sister hurriedly got on the bus, and Xu Di picked up the ticket.
"Sister, is there any water? I'm choking."
"Here, a lazy donkey on the millstone will produce a lot of shit and urine."
Xu Di handed him a glass bottle filled with water. This was the IV bottle that Mrs. Xu brought back from the factory hospital. She washed it and used it to hold water for drinking.
"Thank you, second sister."
Xu Jun took a sip of water and swallowed the steamed bread that was choking him.
"Have a seat, we'll be there in a moment."
Xu Di put the bottle away, looked at the retro car, felt the bumpy road, and his mind flew to the countryside.
The situation of my grandfather's home in the countryside, my grandparents, my uncles, aunts, and several younger brothers and sisters kept flashing through my mind.
With a creak, the bus stopped and they arrived.
Xu Di, you can do it, you definitely can.
I cheered myself up and walked towards my grandfather's house with confident steps.
