Chapter 114 Sleeping in on a Rainy Day

When Yunling returned home, it was already late, and no one was sitting under the tree chatting in the yard anymore.

When she returned to her room, she saw Qin Chuan sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed) reading a book, with a kerosene lamp lit.

Seeing her return, he smiled and teased, "Have you heard enough gossip?"

Yunling smiled and shook her head, then moved closer to him and glanced at the book he was reading—a history book.

She asked with a smile, "Where do you own a bookstore?"

The house is only so big, but she's lived here for so many days, she knows exactly where the mouse holes are.

Qin Chuan raised an eyebrow: "I picked it up on the road."

Yunling didn't believe it. In this era, resources were scarce, and people were reluctant to use things they had just bought.

The same goes for books. If someone in the family is reading, they bring them home; if no one is reading, they bring them home to start a fire.

Where can I find books?

She sighed, looked at Qin Chuan with a resentful gaze, and said, "We've only known each other for a short time, and you've already started lying to me."

Qin Chuan couldn't help but chuckle.

He patted her head and said, "Why would I lie to you? I really found it. I found it this morning when you were watching the commotion so intently. Nobody claimed it, so I brought it back."

He stood next to her for a long time with the book in his hand, waiting for someone to claim it, but she never saw it.

He was thoroughly enjoying the spectacle; he had never seen anyone so enthusiastic about watching a show.

They've practically ingrained a love of watching the excitement into their very bones.

Yunling smiled shyly. After taking a shower and drying her hair, she moved closer to him, and the couple read a book together.

I got sleepy while watching it.

She nodded her head and fell asleep in Qin Chuan's arms.

Seeing that she was fast asleep, Qin Chuan closed the book, blew out the kerosene lamp, and, holding his sweet and soft wife, closed his eyes as well.

In the middle of the night, a light rain began to fall.

Every autumn rain brings a chill.

Yunling felt cold and snuggled closer to Qin Chuan, her eyes still sleepy, and covered herself tightly with the blanket.

When I woke up the next morning, the rain outside was still pouring down, pattering against the window.

Looks like I don't have to go to work again.

She glanced at Qin Chuan beside her, lay in his arms listening to the rain, and continued to sleep soundly.

When I woke up again, it was already nine o'clock in the morning.

My stomach was rumbling.

Qin Chuan had already disappeared.

After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she made herself a cup of malted milk powder and ate some peach shortbread as breakfast.

There was no one else in the courtyard; only the sound of voices coming from inside the rooms could be heard.

She moved a small stool, sat by the door, and looked at the scenery outside.

The trees and vegetable garden in the yard are exceptionally lush and green after being weathered by wind and rain, especially the cucumbers, which look very fresh.

I'm getting a little hungry.

She put on her raincoat, braved the rain and trudged through the mud to pick cucumbers in the vegetable garden.

The cucumber vines are old, leaving only a few old cucumbers for seeds and a few small, green cucumbers that have sprouted last.

She picked one, shook off the water, rinsed it with clean water, and sat under the eaves eating the cucumber.

Crunch, crunch, so delicious!

It has a strong cucumber flavor.

It's completely different from what you buy in supermarkets in later generations.

"Sister-in-law, give me one too," Liu Yun called out from the window.

Yunling broke off one for her, washed it, and handed it to her.

Liu Yun glanced at it, took it, and complained, "This one's a bit old, you did it on purpose, didn't you!"

"Then don't eat it." Yunling snatched it away. "I'll save it for my Qin Chuan."

Liu Yun: ...

She paused for a moment, then peeked out, reached out to grab it, and said with a smile, "They're all cucumbers, as long as they're edible."

Yunling stood out of her reach and said, "Didn't you say you were old?"

She couldn't stand Liu Yun's bad habits.

They always like to find fault where there is none.

Liu Yun was both amused and exasperated, saying, "Is it really that bad? I'm just telling the truth, I am indeed getting a bit old."

Yunling: "Then pick one that isn't old yourself."
