That was the end of the story.
But after dinner, my mother-in-law said she was going to visit Chen Ergou.
Yunling also wanted to go.
"Go on!" Qin Chuan waved his hand. "I'm going to take a nap."
Yunling went with her mother-in-law.
Zhang Hongxia, who lived next door, happened to be going out. Upon learning that they were going to the Chen family's house, she picked a bunch of green vegetables at the door and followed them.
The Chen family home was very quiet and deserted.
It felt a bit cold as soon as I went in.
The room still smelled of Chinese medicine.
Yunling didn't go in; she sat on a small stool by the door, listening intently.
Zhang Guihua handed an egg to Meng Taohua and said, "Make some egg drop soup for the child."
I was going to take two, but as I was leaving, I thought about it and put one down instead.
Meng Taohua took it, but in her heart she thought it was really stingy, only taking one egg to see a patient.
But then Zhang Hongxia handed him a bunch of green vegetables.
Oh, so the stingier person is here.
Looking at Chen Ergou, whose face was paler than the one on the kang (heated brick bed), Zhang Hongxia felt no sympathy whatsoever. She called his name softly.
Just like calling back a soul, Chen Ergou, who was half asleep and half awake, was suddenly startled, opened his eyes, saw Aunt Zhao, and breathed a sigh of relief.
She called out weakly, "Aunt Zhao."
Zhang Hongxia responded and scolded, "You can't be so reckless as to go up the mountain in the rain just for a bite to eat. Look at how much trouble you've caused everyone."
Chen Ergou propped himself up and sat up, explaining, "It hadn't rained when I went up the mountain."
Zhang Hongxia sneered and said, "You're still a mountain kid. Can't you see whether it's raining or not? It's all cloudy this morning, how could it not rain?"
Chen Ergou turned his head away and said, "Alright! It's all my fault. When I get better, I'll kowtow and thank everyone."
"That's how it should be. If everyone hadn't gone up the mountain to look for you, you'd probably be dead by now, and you're still arguing with me."
Recalling the fear she had felt that morning, Zhang Hongxia felt even more strongly that Chen Ergou was no good.
He is so bold.
"Alright! This is never going to end. My son already knows he was wrong, what more do you want from him? He's so old, and he's always arguing with young people. Have some shame!" Meng Taohua grabbed Zhang Hongxia's arm and dragged her outside.
Although she didn't like her son either.
But after all, he was a piece of her flesh.
How can we let others talk about him like that?
Zhang Hongxia didn't want to leave. She wanted to say a few more words, "What are you doing? What are you doing? My son is your son's savior. I came to visit him out of kindness. How could you do this?"
Meng Taohua retorted, "Then you're really like a weasel offering New Year's greetings to a chicken—you're up to no good. Don't forget, when your son ran away from home as a child, my husband went up the mountain to look for him. Now we're even."
Zhang Hongxia: "..."
That's really true.
I thought I had them incriminating evidence against me.
From now on, Chen Ergou can work for her son.
After all, Chen Ergou had exploited her son's weakness recently, making him do a lot of work.
"Go away! You!" Meng Taohua pushed her out of the courtyard gate.
Seeing Yunling at the door, he smiled and asked, "Would you like some hot water? I'll pour you a cup."
His smiling face was somewhat unsettling, giving the impression that he harbored ill intentions.
Yunling shook her head and said, "No need, I just drank some at home and my stomach is still a little bloated."
"You're not pregnant, are you? You've been married to the third son of the Qin family for quite a while now." Meng Taohua said, reaching out to touch Yunling's belly.
Yunling quickly stepped back.
She explained, "I drank too much water. As the person involved, how could I not know whether I have children or not?"
"Alright, stop teasing the child," Zhang Guihua quickly interjected.
Meng Taohua laughed twice.
Yunling tugged at her mother-in-law's sleeve.
Zhang Guihua said, "We still have a lot to do at home, so we'll go now. Take good care of Er Gou."
On the way, Zhang Guihua said, "Don't be afraid, she just regrets that it wasn't her son who saved you."
Yunling: "???!!!"
Are you out of your mind?!
I'm already married!
Seeing her daughter-in-law's disgusted expression, Zhang Guihua said, "Don't worry or be afraid. She'll just think about it. If she dares to say anything that tarnishes your reputation, I'll beat her up."
Yunling took her mother-in-law's arm and said, "Thank you, Mother."
Back home.
The small stove was put out again, with sweet potatoes and potatoes on it.
The men of the Qin family sat around the stove, warming themselves by the fire, then staring at the sweet potatoes and potatoes, chatting occasionally.
"Want some?" Qin Chuan asked Yun Ling as she returned, handing her a sweeter one.
Qin Hai: "Huh..."
Qin Chuan glanced at him and said, "Who's like you, always making your wife do this and that? I'm different."
He pulled himself up and stepped on his second brother.
Yunling agreed wholeheartedly, saying, "Second brother, you have no idea how worried your sister-in-law was when you went up the mountain. She was restless, pacing anxiously, and looking longingly in the direction of the descent. You really should treat her better."
Qin Hai is otherwise a good person. He doesn't discriminate against girls, likes to joke around, and is easy to get along with.
But his wife was unlucky; she was constantly being bossed around by him.
He made his second sister-in-law do the things that he could easily do himself.
Qin Hai looked at Qin Chuan and Yun Ling, and asked in confusion, "Am I really that bad?"
Everyone nodded emphatically.
"My mother is just like your little maid," Qin Yan said very softly.
Qin Hai frowned and said, "Is it really that excessive? It's not something that can be done casually."
