Chapter 14 Swift Legs

After cutting pig feed, you still need to chop it.

Qin Yan watched anxiously as her third aunt slowly chopped pig feed. "Third aunt, let me help you?"

I wish I could just snatch it and chop it up myself.

Yunling straightened up, glanced at the huge kitchen knife, and said, "No, what if I get hurt?"

"It's okay, I'm not afraid." Qin Yan reached out and grabbed the kitchen knife from the cutting board.

Qin Tao pulled her over and said, "What's the rush? The fish in the river won't all be caught."

Qin Yan pouted, ran to Yun Ling's side, and put pig feed on the cutting board.

Midway through, Yunling didn't even have time to catch her breath before more pig feed appeared on the cutting board. She glanced helplessly at Qin Yan and sped up her work.

It took Qin Yan about half the usual time to chop the pig feed. She ran ahead, glancing back every now and then.

When they arrived at the riverbank, there were many children. The river water was murky, and several little boys were splashing water in the river, their bodies naked. When they saw Yunling and the others arrive, they happily splashed water at them.

Qin Tao pulled her sister away and ran off, while Yun Ling also stepped back. Qin Yan picked up a stone and threw it at a spot not far from them.

With a bang, water splashed everywhere.

The little boy made a funny face, then splashed water onto the shore with a grin, continuing the water fight.

I have absolutely no intention of leaving.

Yunling looked at Qin Yan, who was stamping her feet incessantly not far away, and suggested, "Should we go to other sections of the river?"

Qin Yan pouted and said disappointedly, "The fish in other places are so small, they're all tiny fry. Grandma said it's not cost-effective to use oil, but it's fishy if we don't."

Yunling thought for a moment and said, "Why don't we go home first today, and I'll take you to the mountain to pick wild fruits another day?"

Qin Yan nodded happily, and took Yun Ling's hand, saying, "Third Aunt, you must remember this."

Looking at Yunling with his round eyes, he said earnestly, "I will remind you."

"Xiao Yan, stop fooling around," Qin Tao said, frowning as she stopped her.

Grandma had instructed them that Third Aunt was in poor health and that they should take good care of her and not cause any trouble. How could they let Third Aunt take them up the mountain?

Qin Yan looked at Yun Ling expectantly. She hadn't been up the mountain in a long time. Xiao Cui said that the wild cherries on the mountain were ripe and the wild grapes were ready to eat.

"Third Aunt~"

Yunling also wanted to go up the mountain for a stroll. She said, "Let's not go far, just to the foot of the mountain, and see if there are any wild strawberries you picked the other day."

Qin Yan nodded sullenly. There were many children in the village, and all the good fruits at the foot of the mountain had already been picked. But she was still happy to be able to play.

Back home, Qin Rui sat on a stool by the kitchen door. When she saw her sister return, her eyes lit up, and she ran over, hugging Qin Tao's leg and calling out, "Sister, sister!"

Looking at Yunling, she called out timidly, like a little kitten, "Third Aunt."

Yunling responded, looking at his pale face, and patted his head. Since she arrived, she had rarely seen this child except for meals, judging from the conversations of the Qin family.

It was learned that Qin Rui had been in poor health since childhood and usually stayed in his room, only coming out for a walk when the weather was nice.

Qin Rui smiled shyly and hid behind Qin Tao.

"Go have fun!" Yunling waved her hand.

The children ran off, and Yunling went to the kitchen. A wave of heat hit her, as if she were in a steamer.

Qin Tiantian was sitting under the stove tending the fire when she saw Yunling and said, "Third Sister-in-law, the food will be ready soon. It's hot in the kitchen, so please don't come in."

Seeing Qin Tiantian drenched in sweat, Yunling went out and got a palm-leaf fan, then sat down next to her to fan herself.

The two chatted casually.

Looking at Qin Tiantian, who had a smile on her face, a clear and cheerful voice, and was full of energy.

One can't help but admire how sensible this girl is. She always works quietly. Although she doesn't work at the factory, the housework is still quite demanding, and she also has to take care of Qin Rui. It's much more tiring than working for her.

Qin Tiantian said with a smile, "The steamed buns are the best when they're fresh out of the steamer today. Third Sister-in-law, eat more later."

“Okay, what can I do to help you?” Yunling asked as she walked around the kitchen.

Qin Tiantian said, "Could you chop the pickled vegetables on the cutting board for me? I'll mix them up later."

Yunling responded and went to chop the pickled vegetables. The pickled vegetables seemed to have just been taken out of the water; they were still dripping wet and had many small particles on them. She asked, "Don't you need to wash these?"

Qin Tiantian looked up, glanced at it, and said, "I've already washed it once, so there's no need to wash it again, otherwise it won't be salty enough. It's the hottest time of year now, and we're sweating a lot, so we need to eat more salt."

Yunling nodded and quickly finished chopping the pickled vegetables.

After the two of them worked for a while, the others returned. Yunling and Qin Tiantian brought the food to the table and went to the kitchen to get freshly steamed buns. They were dark-colored buns with a wheat aroma.

As soon as the steamed buns were placed on the table, everyone stared at them, waiting for Zhang Guihua to speak.

"Eat up!" Zhang Guihua said, looking at the crowd who were constantly swallowing their saliva.

Yunling took one, took a bite, and found the steamed bun to be very firm, unlike those from later generations, which would crumble into a small piece if squeezed. It tasted a little sweet and a little bitter, but not unpleasant.

She finished eating quickly and reached for the second one. It's a family tradition that the men usually eat three, the women two, and the children one.

She choked on half of the second steamed bun, quickly drank a mouthful of porridge, and swallowed it. After that, Yunling didn't eat the other half of the steamed bun, but finished the rest of the porridge with cucumber salad.

She didn't have to wash the dishes today. After the family finished eating, they sat in the yard chatting. In the evening, sitting under the tree, a few cool breezes would occasionally come out, which was cooler than inside the house.
