Liu Yun pouted. Of the three daughters-in-law in the family, her mother-in-law disliked her the most. She looked at her mother-in-law with resentment.
Zhang Guihua was completely unaware of what was happening. She instructed Wang Xiuxiu to cut the meat quickly and add plenty of scallions, ginger, and garlic to remove any unpleasant smell.
Wild boar meat is not cooked, and because it lives in the mountains and forests year-round, its skin is tough and its meat is thick, resulting in a rather fishy taste.
“I don’t know when your dad and the others will come back. They didn’t return until it was almost dark last year,” Zhang Guihua said.
Liu Yun immediately said, "Mother, Father and the others set off early today, so they should be back soon."
Zhang Guihua nodded: "I hope so. I'll rest for a while longer and then go to the fields."
After all this fuss, it's only 10 o'clock now, not time to clock out yet.
She looked at Yunling, who was playing with Xiaotao and the others, and said, "Third brother's wife, you don't need to go this afternoon. Your sister-in-law and I will help you cut pig feed. You can rest at home."
Yunling didn't stand on ceremony: "Thank you, Mother."
Liu Yun retorted, unconvinced, "Why? Cutting pig feed doesn't take much effort, and it doesn't require a rest!"
Zhang Guihua looked at Liu Yun with a grim expression, feeling deeply that she was an ingrate, and said irritably, "Just because Yunling saved your daughter today."
She looked at Liu Yun with disdain and said, "I don't know what the boss thought of you back then."
She had already found a partner for her eldest son, Liu Lili, the daughter of the brigade leader of the neighboring Qingshan brigade. She was the eldest in her family, with three younger brothers. She was hardworking and sensible, capable of supporting the family, and perfectly suited to be the eldest daughter-in-law of the Qin family. She had been searching for a long time before making her choice.
Unexpectedly, the eldest brother, who was blind, ended up choosing Liu Lili's cousin, Liu Yun.
Liu Yun readily admitted her mistake: "Mother, I know I was wrong."
He then turned to Yunling and said sincerely, "Third sister-in-law, thank you for today."
Zhang Guihua looked at Liu Yun and said, "I remember you still have a piece of blue and white checkered cotton cloth. Give it to Lao San's wife! After all, she saved your daughter."
She didn't want to get involved, but seeing Liu Yun's ungrateful attitude gave her a real headache.
Let her feel hurt and learn a lesson.
Liu Yun was unwilling, but seeing her mother-in-law's stern gaze, she explained, "...I'm using that fabric to make clothes for Xiao Tao."
Zhang Guihua snorted coldly and said, "How long have you been doing this? You haven't done anything. Don't try to fool me."
With your selfishness, you'd be better off making clothes for Xiaotao than for you.
Liu Yun's smile froze as she went back to her room, retrieved the fabric, and reluctantly handed it to Yunling.
Yunling raised an eyebrow, tugged at the fabric, and said in a teasy tone, "I didn't want it at first, but it's a token of my sister-in-law's kindness, so I can't refuse. Otherwise, she'll feel bad. Thank you, sister-in-law."
Liu Yun nodded with a forced smile.
If you don't want it, don't accept it. I'm just being polite, don't you understand?
Yunling looked at the fabric in her hand. It was blue and white checkered cotton, perfect for making shirts and skirts.
She just doesn't know how to do it, so she needs to take some time to learn.
She smiled and said, "It's so pretty. I'll put it back in my room first so it won't get dirty. Thank you, sister-in-law."
Liu Yun continued to force a smile.
This third sister-in-law really loves to take advantage of others.
In the kitchen, Qin Tiantian whispered, "Second sister-in-law, you're too soft-hearted, that's why you're always bullied by eldest sister-in-law. You should be like third sister-in-law and not be so polite to eldest sister-in-law."
Wang Xiuxiu smiled and said, "It's alright, we're all family."
Seeing this, Qin Tiantian stopped trying to persuade her. Anyway, with her mother at home, she wouldn't suffer any major losses.
After resting for a while, everyone went to work in the fields. Yunling was "persuaded" twice to stay at home.
After cleaning the wild boar meat, Qin Tiantian looked at her niece playing hopscotch in the yard and asked, "Where's your third aunt?"
Qin Tao pointed to her third aunt's room and said, "She's asleep."
"Are you and Xiao Yanzi tired? Do you want to go back to your room to sleep too?" Qin Tiantian asked.
Qin Yan shook her head, looked at her aunt, and asked, "When can we eat meat?"
Qin Tiantian playfully pinched her nose and laughed, "You little glutton, when everyone else comes back, we'll all eat meat together. Aren't you scared today?"
Qin Yan shook her head: "I'm not afraid now."
She patted her small chest.
Qin Tiantian looked terrified. Her two nieces slept with her every night, and she would be heartbroken if anything happened to either of them.
She asked, "Would you like some peach shortbread?"
Qin Yan nodded immediately and swallowed hard.
Qin Tiantian went back to her room and got two tablets, giving one to Qin Tao and one to Qin Yan.
"You all stay here and eat quietly. I'm going to check on Xiao Rui."
Qin Tao, holding the peach shortbread, immediately stood up: "I'm going to see my little brother too."
The two arrived at Qin Shan and his wife's room. Qin Rui was fast asleep on the bed. Qin Tao saw the sweat on her younger brother's face and neck, wiped it with a towel, picked up a palm-leaf fan from the kang (a heated brick bed), and started fanning him.
Seeing this, Qin Tiantian praised, "Our Xiaotao is such a good older sister. You watch over your brother while I go pull the weeds in the yard."
As I was leaving, I noticed she was clutching a peach shortbread that she hadn't even taken a bite of, and I said, "You can eat the peach shortbread by yourself. I'll give Xiaorui a piece later."
Qin Tao then took a bite. It was very crispy, crumbly, and very sweet. She caught the crumbs with her hand.
I ate it in small bites, then poured the crumbs into my mouth. It was so delicious.
"Sister, have you finished eating?" Qin Yan asked pitifully, leaning against the doorway.
Qin Tao glanced at her younger sister and said, "I'm done eating."
Qin Yan sighed and said wistfully, "I wonder when I'll be able to eat peach shortbread again?"
Only my grandma and aunt have peach shortbread at home. I usually don't give it to them. The last time was a long time ago.
