Chen Ergou was kicked in the butt and squatted down, but he still swallowed his saliva, savoring the chicken he had just eaten. It was so delicious.
Unfortunately, he was arrested before he could finish eating.
Seeing this, Zhao Chunyu was so angry she almost cried. She kicked him a few more times and yelled, "Shameless! Pay me back!"
Several middle-aged women rushed out from the crowd. They had had their chickens stolen before. When they saw Chen Ergou, the chicken thief, they remembered the chickens that had been stolen from their own homes. They grabbed Chen Ergou and beat him until he ran away with his head in his hands.
Qin Baoguo didn't stop him. Anyway, he couldn't kill or cripple Chen Ergou. It would be good to teach Chen Ergou a lesson in petty theft.
He sent people to search the Chen family's house, but they couldn't find any money. Instead, they brought over a half-eaten stewed chicken.
The aroma of chicken soup filled the courtyard, and many people swallowed hard, drooling over the half-pot of soup. Many children wandered around, glancing at it every now and then.
Chen Ergou struggled to his feet and shouted, "My chicken!!!"
Qin Baoguo ignored it, looked at the pot of chicken soup, and turned to Zhao Chunyu: "Zhao Zhiqing, what do you think we should do with this half pot of chicken soup?"
Zhao Chunyu wanted to eat, but with so many people around, she was concerned about saving face. Besides, Chen Ergou was slovenly, with greasy hair and dark skin, which made her feel a little nauseous. She generously said, "I'll share it with the children."
Aunt Zhao pushed her way out of the crowd and said, "I'll divide it up, I'll divide it up."
They have four children, so if she's the one dividing the spoils, she can get a bigger share.
These days, there's a shortage of food and clothing, and people can't even eat a piece of meat all year round.
Now that there's fragrant chicken, she doesn't mind eating the leftovers at all.
She took the half-pot of chicken soup, and walked out triumphantly, basking in the envious glances of the crowd.
Qin Baoguo instructed, "Okay, but make it fair."
Aunt Zhou stepped forward and said loudly, "I'll go and watch her distribute them."
Aunt Zhao rolled her eyes at Aunt Zhou.
Chen Ergou also got up, looking longingly at the half-pot of chicken soup.
Zhao Chunyu secretly kicked him from behind again, and Chen Ergou fell flat on his face. He got up and cursed, "Which son of a bitch dared to kick me?"
An older woman in the crowd sneered, "It's not right to kick you. Who told you to always steal chickens and dogs? You deserve it!"
Chen Ergou glared fiercely at everyone.
Qin Baoguo coughed, looked at Zhao Chunyu, and asked, "Do you want Chen Ergou to pay money, or the old hen?"
Zhao Chunyu said without hesitation, "I'll compensate you with the old hen."
Chen Ergou, shameless as ever, said, "My family has no money and no old hen."
Zhao Chunyu snorted and said, "Then I'll call the police and put you in jail."
Qin Baoguo looked at Meng Taohua, who had been pretending to be deaf and mute in the crowd, and asked, "What do you say?"
Meng Taohua, who was pointed out, smiled sheepishly, grabbed Chen Ergou's ear, and said ingratiatingly, "Zhao Zhiqing, you know my family's situation. We usually don't have enough to eat, and we still owe the team work points. Where would we get the money?"
Zhao Chunyu was cold and ruthless: "Your family is poor because you are incompetent. Why should I be considerate of you? If you don't want to compensate, then I'll send your son to jail."
Meng Taohua frowned: "How can you, a girl, be so heartless? How will you ever get married?"
She cast a disdainful glance at Zhao Chunyu.
Zhao Chunyu laughed in anger, spat, and said, "Whether I get married or not is none of your business. Who gives you the right to interfere?"
She looked Chen Ergou up and down and said disdainfully, "Look at your son, he has the nerve to say I can't get married. I think he'll never find a wife."
Meng Taohua's face was ferocious, and her eyes were vicious.
Zhao Chunyu rolled her eyes.
Looking at the captain beside him, he said indifferently, "If they really don't want to pay compensation, I'll call the police and let them decide."
Meng Taohua pretended to be calm and said, "If you're so capable, go ahead and see if the police will bother with a little liar like you over a chicken."
Zhao Chunyu: "Jiang Fan, can I borrow your bicycle?"
Jiang Fan, who was eating melon seeds under the big tree, was caught off guard when his name was called. He was stunned for a moment, then generously said, "Okay, I'll lend it to you. You can use it for as long as you want."
As he spoke, he tossed the car keys to Zhao Chunyu.
Zhao Chunyu took the key and headed towards the woodshed.
Meng Taohua was still a little skeptical that this girl would dare to call the police.
Chen Ergou got scared and shouted, "Zhao Zhiqing, I'll pay you back, don't call the police!"
Zhao Chunyu glanced at Chen Ergou indifferently and said, "Two chickens, six yuan."
Chen Ergou scratched his head and complained, "You've given me too much. I usually only spend two yuan on a chicken."
Zhao Chunyu sneered, "That's an old hen."
"..." Chen Ergou pleaded pitifully, "Could you make it a little cheaper?"
Zhao Chunyu smiled: "What do you think?"
Chen Ergou squatted down, took out a ten-yuan note from the sole of his shoe, and hesitantly handed it to Zhao Chunyu.
He whispered, "Give me four dollars in change."
A hint of disdain flashed in Zhao Chunyu's eyes, but for the sake of money, she grabbed it.
He went back inside, took out four yuan, and handed it to Chen Ergou.
Unexpectedly, Meng Taohua snatched it away, stuffed it into her pocket, and slapped Chen Ergou on the back of the head.
She grabbed his ear and scolded, "Now that you're all grown up, you dare to hide money from your mother? Do you know how hard it was for me to raise you all these years, feeding you and changing your diapers..."
The mother and son walked away, grumbling and cursing.
Qin Baoguo coughed and said, "Since no one admits it and it wasn't Chen Ergou who stole it, all of you educated youth should check each other."
He was afraid that the educated youth would cover for each other, so he appointed a few more people to supervise the scene.
