Chapter 24 New Discovery
"Shuyan, why are we asking for leave?"
Qin Fei was very happy to be able to take leave.
"Let's go to the city."
Qin Fei was stunned for a moment, "But how do we get there?"
Speaking of this, Song Shuyan wanted to sigh, "Just go by bike."
Qin Fei stopped and shook his head vigorously, his mask of pain almost coming out. "No! I can't do it. Riding a bike to the city might take three hours, and it might take six or seven hours to go back and forth. Are you trying to tire us both to death?"
Song Shuyan also scratched his head in pain, "Ah, but the things I want to buy are only available in the city."
Qin Fei was very curious, "What do you want to buy?"
"herbicide!"
"Ah? Why buy this thing?" Qin Fei was confused. He even went all the way to the city to buy it.
"Look at the grass on this road. Is it hard to weed?"
Qin Fei nodded frantically and stretched out his hands for her to see. "Look, I've only been hoeing for less than an hour, and the blisters are all coming out."
"Yeah, we've worked hard all day and haven't been able to clear much of the road. Why not find another way?"
Qin Fei understood.
But she was a city dweller and had never done farm work, so she didn't know what herbicides were. After hearing the name, she made a rough guess and finally realized the function of herbicides.
The team leader had a bicycle at home, so Song Shuyan borrowed one from him and also borrowed one from another aunt in the village.
My aunt said that since the elderly are at home, we can just talk to them directly.
Song Shuyan is generous and offers fifty cents for borrowing the car for a day. Who wouldn't be willing to lend it to her?
When Helan saw that Song Shuyan and Qin Fei had asked for leave again, he felt both envious and jealous, and watched them carrying their hoes and walking away with envy in his eyes.
"Why did they ask for leave again? Why did the captain agree to it?"
Li Chunmei calmly withdrew her gaze and said, "The other person has the conditions and is happy to ask for leave."
It seems that the team leader has never blocked the educated youth from asking for leave.
Chunmei herself never asked for leave. Although she was a city dweller, her family was poor and she had many children. She had to help lighten the burden on her family and earn more work points, which she would exchange for money and food to send back home at the end of the year.
Although Qin Fei was extremely reluctant to ride her bike to the city, she had already taken leave and borrowed a bike, so she had to risk her life to accompany her best friend on the trip.
The two returned to the Youth League Home, each filled a bottle of boiled water, put it on their backs, put on straw hats, and set off on their bicycles.
After riding for a while, Qin Fei felt a little tired and suddenly had an idea. "How about we go to the staff quarters and ask someone there to borrow a car to take us to the city?"
Then who?
Song Shuyan's mind flashed to Zhou Jingshen's handsome and cold face. Without a second thought, he refused. "No, how can we be so shameless? We've only met a few times. Why would we trouble him with such a trivial matter?"
Qin Fei wanted to cry but had no tears. "But just thinking about riding a bike for such a long distance makes me tired and want to cry."
Song Shuyan firmly disagreed. If they really came to him, would he look down on them?
She doesn't have the face to do so.
She couldn't do it, so she shamelessly asked him to lend her his car to take her to the city.
Besides, he might not be there when I get there, right?
Zhou Jingshen was really not there. He had accepted a task and after calculating the task cycle, he was afraid that he would not be able to make it to the day they had agreed to have dinner together. He was extremely annoyed.
Unfortunately, the mission was urgent and he didn't have time to tell her.
He asked Chen Feng to help him explain it when the time comes.
Chen Feng agreed readily.
"Shuyan, what do you think is more important, life or face?" Qin Fei was panting heavily, and he wanted to lie on the handlebars of the car.
"All are important."
Song Shuyan was also very tired. She didn't want to talk at all. Wouldn't it be better to save the energy for talking and use it to ride a bike?
She stopped, unscrewed the kettle and took a sip. Qin Fei caught up with her and said, "Wait for me, I need some water too."
She also stopped the car, unscrewed the kettle and took a few sips.
There were few people along the way. Fortunately, the team leader told us to just walk along the main road and not go into the fork in the road.
The road to the city is the flattest and largest road. According to the team leader, you won’t go wrong if you have eyes.
After going through untold hardships and riding until their legs and feet were weak, they finally arrived in the city.
Song Shuyan randomly stopped a kind-looking woman and asked, "Hello, do you know where I can buy fertilizer?"
The old lady saw that the girl who stopped her was as beautiful as a fairy, and was stunned when she heard her asking for directions. How could such a girl be related to fertilizer?
She could understand if she wanted to ask for directions to a dealership to buy cloth and ready-made clothes.
Although she didn't understand, the old lady still pointed the way.
"Go straight ahead, turn left at the archway, then keep going forward and turn right at the intersection... If you don't understand, keep stopping people and asking!"
Song Shuyan smiled sweetly, "Thank you, Auntie!"
The two of them got on their bikes again and rode to the archway the old lady mentioned. Song Shuyan was surprised to find that there were stalls selling fruits and vegetables on both sides.
It turned out to be a vegetable market.
She was greatly shocked, and suddenly realized that she had read too many novels and had a preconceived notion that nothing could be bought and sold freely.
That’s right, if nothing can be bought or sold, what will the people in the city eat?
How can the supply and marketing cooperative supply vegetables to so many people in the entire city? Besides, which village provides the agricultural products to the supply and marketing cooperative?
Can their village also sell its surplus agricultural products in the market?
"Hey, comrade, wanna buy some groceries?"
Song Shuyan took a closer look at a stall where a pile of Chinese cabbage was neatly arranged. The old stall owner was enthusiastically soliciting customers.
"No, thanks." Song Shuyan waved his hand.
Qin Fei looked around curiously, and at this moment she forgot her physical fatigue.
“There are also people selling pomegranates!” she exclaimed.
"Do you want it, comrade?" The lady selling pomegranates picked up a big pomegranate and held it up to show her.
Qin Fei felt embarrassed. She always felt that pomegranates were sour and didn't like to eat them.
She hesitated, "No, I don't want it, thank you."
The old lady put the pomegranate back in disappointment.
He muttered to himself, "No? My pomegranates are delicious and not expensive, why don't you want them?"
Song Shuyan thought about how long it had been since he had eaten fruit, so he asked, "How much is it?"
The old lady's cloudy eyes suddenly brightened up. "Five cents each! Take your pick, girl. This one is big!"
The old lady held up a red pomegranate and showed it to her.
Song Shuyan nodded, "Let's take this one."
She took out a dime.
The old lady was embarrassed, "I don't have the change." She looked at Song Shuyan cautiously, fearing that the deal would fall through.
"Then I'll pick another one."
The old lady smiled happily, "Hey!"
Song Shuyan handed one of the pomegranates to Qin Fei, "Let's take one each."
Qin Fei's face wrinkled as he thought of the sour taste of pomegranates. "I don't want it!"
Song Shuyan stuffed it into her cart and said, "Then please take it back for me and divide it between Chunmei and Helan."
There were not many people buying vegetables on the street, probably because it was past dinner time. Qin Fei's stomach growled a few times and her face flushed.
Song Shuyan looked around and saw no food for sale. There was an old man selling sweet potatoes, who was eating them raw.
At other stalls, some stall owners were eating their own meals in glass cans.
