Chapter 51 Heavy Rain, Moving
In darkness, human senses are infinitely magnified.
Listening to the howling wind and rain, Song Shuyan was afraid that these mud walls and broken tiles would collapse at any time, and he couldn't sleep at all.
She hugged the quilt tightly, praying that the rain would stop soon and the sky would clear up soon.
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned.
She dozed off for a long time and couldn't sleep well. When she woke up and saw Chunmei packing up, she realized it was dawn. She got up, opened the door a little and looked out.
The raindrops hit her face with a clatter, washing her face with a cool feeling.
She quickly closed the door.
It was so gray outside that I couldn't tell what time it was.
"What time is it?"
Qin Fei sat up from the bed, looked at his watch, and told her, "8:22."
Chunmei stuffed all the things into the cloth bag, and when she opened the pine needle box that Song Shuyan gave her last night, she found a handful of candy inside.
She curled the corners of her mouth, closed the lid, and continued to pack.
I was wondering how many days I would have to fetch water for Song Shuyan to take a bath after the rain stopped.
"You guys should pack up too. This rain doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon. We need to get ready to move to the ancestral hall."
Qin Fei suddenly remembered that before going to bed, Chunmei reminded her not to sleep too deeply and to get up to pour water.
A lot of rainwater leaked down, and she didn't get up to pour it out even once!
The house won’t flood!
She woke up instantly and looked at the wooden barrel beside the bed. Raindrops were dripping and splashing water, but the water in the barrel was not full yet.
She guessed that Chunmei must have fallen down, and hurriedly thanked Chunmei.
"Chunmei, without you, Shuyan and I don't know how to survive!"
Song Shuyan also thought so.
If she had to get up in the middle of the night to pour out rainwater, she would really collapse.
Helan snorted, "He just wants to take advantage of Chunmei."
Chunmei shook her head helplessly. Since she couldn't sleep anyway, it would be no big deal to do more work.
It wasn't hard to wake them up and pour them some water. In that time, she had already poured all the water.
She packed up her things and emptied the buckets and basins in the house again.
Every time you open the door, a howling wind blows rain into the house.
"We were so sleepy last night that we didn't even notice Chunmei getting up to pour water!"
Song Shuyan's face flushed. In fact, it was not that she didn't feel anything, she was just too lazy to get up, so her dress didn't notice.
I'll use something else in the future to compensate Chunmei for the labor she put in.
Song Shuyan walked to the corner where the luggage was piled, picked out one of the packages accurately, opened it, found the peach cakes that had been sitting there for a long time, and shared them with everyone. "Are you hungry? Eat something first?"
She walked to Chunmei, grabbed a handful of peach cakes and stuffed them into her hands.
Before Chunmei could react, she had already walked to Qin Fei's side.
Helan looked at her quietly again and again until Song Shuyan walked towards her, then she turned her head away, pretending to be busy, and nervously waited for her to share the peach cakes.
"Give!"
Song Shuyan grabbed a handful and stuffed it into Helan's hand.
After dividing them, Song Shuyan picked up one and ate it herself. When you are hungry, everything tastes good. Now she doesn't mind that the peach cake is boring and has crumbs.
After eating the peach cakes, Chunmei poured water several times.
Song Shuyan was scared every time he opened the door.
It feels like being blown by the wind and rain.
The wooden windows on the wall were creaking due to the wind.
The floor of the house was muddy, wet and slippery.
Song Shuyan missed the high-rise buildings decades later very much. Even if it was raining heavily, he could just close the doors and windows, draw the curtains, lie down on the bed while playing with his mobile phone. What was there to be afraid of in the rain?
Unlike now, I am always worried about whether this leaky house will collapse.
After an unknown amount of time, someone knocked on the door.
"Open the door! Chunmei, let us help you carry your luggage to the ancestral hall!"
It was Meng Qingwei's voice.
Chunmei opened the door, and Meng Qingwei glanced inside curiously. He then asked Chunmei, "Have you packed your things? Our Youth League is located in a low-lying area, so we can't live in this house anymore."
Chunmei hummed, "It's packed."
"So we go in and move our stuff?"
Chunmei turned around and said to the three people in the room, then moved aside and said, "Come in."
Meng Qingwei waved to the next room, and several male educated youth who were also wearing straw raincoats came out.
Song Shuyan looked at the luggage in the corner with melancholy. Wouldn’t these things get wet if they were moved out?
If you don't move, you may still be flooded.
She was still confused when she saw several male educated youth take out a large piece of plastic sheet from their arms, wrap the luggage with it, and then carry it out.
"Two of you will follow and look after the luggage at the ancestral hall, and the other two will stay behind to look after the remaining luggage."
Chunmei nodded, put on her straw raincoat, found a piece of plastic sheet, wrapped her luggage, and followed them.
"I can go by myself. They can go later when the rain subsides."
Meng Qingwei's voice was intermittent in the rain. "We've been waiting for a long time, but the rain hasn't let up at all."
The accumulated water in the Youth League Home has reached the ankles.
Song Shuyan sighed. She never liked moving, and moving when it rained was even more uncomfortable.
"Shuyan, what should we do?"
"The water outside is so dirty!"
"Aaaaah! I don't want to tread in the water!"
Qin Fei looked outside the house, and the turbid ocean made him want to cry but had no tears.
Helan took out a stick and poked it into the water to test the depth.
Song Shuyan stood next to Helan. "Helan, how's the ancestral hall like? Is it also made of mud and bricks? Can't we just move?"
Helan looked up speechlessly, "We've already moved half of our luggage, and you're talking about this?"
"The houses over there at the ancestral hall are better than ours. They're made of blue bricks."
Song Shuyan had also walked around the village a few times and was puzzled when he heard this. "Are there any houses made of blue bricks in the village?"
"have!"
"It's in the northwest. You may not have been there."
When Meng Qingwei and his friends came back again, they were not in a hurry to move the remaining luggage.
"No, we need to take a break, the rain is getting heavier!"
They all looked serious.
His trouser legs were rolled up high, he was shoeless, his feet were covered in mud, and his raincoat was dripping with water.
Helan's heart skipped a beat. This expression...
She asked tentatively, "Did any house collapse in the village?"
The male educated youth nodded heavily.
"Didn't you understand the sound?"
Song Shuyan and the other two shook their heads in unison.
"Maybe the wind and rain were too loud and I didn't hear it."
"No one was inside when the house collapsed, right? Was anyone injured?"
Meng Qingwei wiped his face and said, "An old lady broke her leg, and a old man passed away last night..."
He looked up at the house of the Educated Youths' Home, where the corners were soaked in water. "Let's go."
"Do you have any straw raincoats?"
Song Shuyan and Qin Fei shook their heads.
"Where's the umbrella?"
The two shook their heads again.
Helan had already found his own raincoat and put it on, so Meng Qingwei had no choice but to say, "After we finish moving our things, we'll borrow raincoats from Chunmei and Helan and come back to pick you up."
Helan also followed and left, leaving only two people. Song Shuyan became even more frightened, and had the illusion that he and Qin Fei were dependent on each other.
They seemed to have been abandoned by the whole world and left in the quiet Youth League Home.
