Chapter 7 Can I take a leave?
Song Shuyan and Li Chunmei walked hand in hand on the country road. As the sky gradually darkened, Li Chunmei urged her, "Hurry up."
"That's Chunxi's house." Li Chunmei pointed.
Song Shuyan looked in the direction he was going. The houses in the village were all similar, with the same yellow mud walls and black tiled roofs arranged in an orderly manner.
Chunmei is very popular in the village. She nods to everyone she meets along the way as a greeting.
"Is this the new educated youth? He's so handsome!" The old lady asked Chunmei as they passed by her house.
Chunmei was proud of it and smiled sincerely, "Yes, she is Song Zhiqing."
"This is Aunt Zhang." Chunmei introduced the two to each other.
"What are you doing?"
"Ask Uncle Gui if he has any new wooden barrels at home."
The uncle Gui that Chunmei mentioned was also enjoying the cool air at the doorstep and doing some carpentry work.
Aunt Zhang and Chunmei were talking loudly, and he heard them. When they were almost there, he stopped what he was doing and looked up at them. "We don't have any wooden barrels ready. We'll have to wait three days to make them."
Chunmei shouted, "Ah, Uncle Gui." She turned to look at Song Shuyan, as if asking her with her eyes whether she wanted it.
Chunxi heard the voice and ran out of the house, "Chunmei!" His tone was full of surprise at seeing a friend.
Because both of their names contain the word "Chun", they felt they had a lot in common and became good friends. They also liked to work together in the fields, and would feel lost the whole day if they were not assigned to work together.
There is no ready-made...
Hearing this, Song Shuyan was struck by lightning.
Very lost.
She still asked, "How much does it cost to make a new barrel?"
"Fifty cents."
Song Shuyan was not yet accustomed to the current prices and felt that they were so cheap that they seemed like they were free.
She thought about the money she brought with her, a total of more than two hundred yuan. Well, she was poor too.
"Then take one."
Uncle Ah Gui didn't even raise his head. "Okay, I'll have Chunxi take it to the educated youth point."
Song Shuyan reached into his trouser pocket, trying to take out the smallest denomination bill.
She took out a one-dollar bill and handed it to Uncle Gui.
Uncle Ah Gui took the money and said, "Wait a minute." Then he went into the house and came out after a while, giving her a handful of change.
One point, two points, and five points are all available.
Every time Song Shuyan saw money of such small denominations, he found it quite interesting, and sometimes he didn't want to spend the change.
When I returned to the educated youth site, the courtyard was filled with the smell of daily life.
The educated youth on duty cooked cornmeal porridge.
The newly arrived male educated youth looked like they had taken a shower, but their hair was still not dry.
Everyone was drinking a bowl of porridge, and there were a few plates of vegetables on the table, without a trace of oil.
"Are you back? Come eat, your porridge is in the kitchen."
Chunmei walked into the kitchen familiarly and brought out two bowls of porridge. Qin Fei held the bowls and made room for them.
"Come sit over here!"
Helan on the opposite side glared at her, "Chunmei! Come sit next to me!"
Chunmei glanced at her and chose to sit next to Song Shuyan.
Helan was so angry that she slammed the bowl on the table. Meng Qingwei frowned and scolded her, "The bowl is broken, you have to buy a new one yourself."
Song Shuyan had been hungry for a long time and didn't want to talk much as he drank the cornmeal porridge that made his throat dry.
Life in the countryside was harder than she had imagined.
After dinner, Song Shuyan looked at the wooden tub in the bathroom with a worried look on her face. Qin Fei didn't know what she was worried about, "Shall I take a shower first?"
Song Shuyan's beautiful eyes lit up. She felt much better psychologically after using the bucket that Qin Fei had used.
There was an illusion that Qin Fei had disinfected the wooden barrel.
Li Chunmei brought a kerosene lamp to their bathroom and said, "Next time you want to take a shower, take it early. Don't wait until dark and waste the lamp oil."
Chunmei felt like she had lost out again. She didn't get to eat the candy, but she ran around with Song Shuyan for a long time and even gave her lamp oil.
Fortunately, when Song Shuyan came out of the shower and was packing up her things, she saw the toffee and quickly grabbed a handful for her.
So much... Chunmei looked at the candy in her hand and hesitated. What else should she do to help Song Shuyan?
Song Shuyan wiped his hair with a clean white towel and smiled brightly, "Chunmei, thank you for today! This candy is for you!"
Chunmei only took two and put the others back in front of her. "It's too much. Sugar is precious. You don't have to give me so much!" As she said this, her eyes were reluctantly glued to the candy she returned to Song Shuyan.
Most families may not be able to get half a pound of sugar coupons in a year.
Song Zhiqing had just arrived in the countryside and might not have understood that milk candy was also hard currency.
Song Shuyan put down the towel and stuffed the candy back to Chunmei. "Actually, I don't like candy. This is something my mom prepared for me. Just take it."
Chunmei doesn't believe that there are people who don't like eating candy.
She pushed the candy back and said, "You can use the candy to trade with the villagers for something useful."
Qin Fei came over, picked up a candy, peeled it open and ate one, "Chunmei, don't be polite with her. We are all friends. What's wrong with eating her food? There's no need to be so fussy about it."
Song Shuyan pursed her lips and smiled, "Yes, I still have some." She showed Chunmei the milk candy she had left, which was more than a pound.
Helan felt isolated by them, and felt wronged and uncomfortable.
Qin Fei grabbed a candy and threw it on Helan's bed, "Hey! Do you want some candy?" They all lived in the same dormitory, and Qin Fei glanced at her unintentionally. He actually felt that the way she lowered her head was a little pitiful.
Helan grabbed the candy and wanted to throw it back.
She doesn't eat!
Who cares!
Song Shuyan glanced at her, and Helan withdrew her hand and clenched the candy in her palm.
Forget it, just consider this as Song Shuyan’s apology.
The next morning.
The horn sounded, and Song Shuyan didn't want to get up. She wanted to cry. What is the most painful thing in the world?
It means getting up before getting enough sleep.
She tossed and turned last night and couldn't sleep. The bed was very hard and there was no pillow, so she found a pair of jeans and folded them up to make do with it, and covered herself with a thin coat.
I have to start working as soon as I arrive.
She was wondering if she could take a leave of absence.
"Get up! If you're late, you'll get scolded!"
Chunmei was the first to stand up and remind them.
Song Shuyan got up like a zombie, washed up, and followed the group to the assembly point.
Fortunately, the task assigned to her was not difficult. She could pull weeds in the fields!
The four female educated youth were grouped together.
"Your mission today is to finish weeding this land!"
Song Shuyan took a look and was shocked. Wow, this is such a large area. How long will it take to remove it?
Can it really be removed in one day?
She squatted down and was about to start working.
The captain stopped beside her, frowning and looking at her with distrust. "Can you tell the difference between weeds and wheat seedlings?"
Song Shuyan spoke faster than she could think. "Who are you looking down on?" She pointed at the wheat seedlings and looked at the team leader with raised eyebrows. "This is wheat seedlings, the rest are weeds!"
The captain stood up straight, nodded with satisfaction, and walked away with his hands behind his back.
"Hey, wait! Captain!" Song Shuyan stopped him.
"What's up?"
"Can I take tomorrow off? I have to go into town to pick up some luggage that was sent to me."
The team leader remembered that when Song Zhiqing came, he only brought one box.
