In the big house, the two babies lay side by side on their parents' bed, sleeping very soundly.
Originally, Mrs. Chu was assigned by Chu Yifeng to be in charge of the care, but she was too sleepy in the hot summer weather, so she leaned sideways against the headboard, nodding her head.
After a while, the old lady also closed her eyes, and before closing her eyes, she covered herself with a towel blanket.
The creaking sound of water being pumped from an old-fashioned well came from the yard.
Several washtubs in front of the house were filled with water.
Chu Yifeng, wearing blue shorts and a white T-shirt, was sweating profusely as he continued to press the last two barrels.
He paused, his hair covered in sweat, and walked away with the two buckets of water in hand. He reached the kitchen, moved more quietly, tilted his head to glance inside, tossed his slippers aside, and slammed the door shut with his big feet before pouring the water into the vat.
After wiping the sweat off his forehead, he put his hands on his hips and sighed, "Oh," showing that he was extremely tired.
I glanced at the time and it’s almost eleven o’clock. Shouldn’t I cook now?
What can the mother of the child want to eat?
Chu Yifeng tossed and turned, glanced at the persimmon, kicked the loofah with his foot, making it roll around, thought for a moment, and went straight to the back garden.
He squatted on the edge of his father-in-law's precious land, rolled up the edge of his white T-shirt, pulled the eggplant vines to swing, pulled off a few beautiful eggplants that he liked, and put them in his clothes pocket.
He looked up and around, and suddenly, as if he had discovered a new world, he ran to the pile of ground by the wall, pulled out a chili pepper, rubbed it on his pants, and took a bite:
"Ah! Ugh! Oh my god." It was so spicy that it was about to kill him.
He then pulled off three cucumbers with flowers and thorns on them, took a final look around, and then carried the spoils back to the front yard in his lapel pocket.
From his back, one could hear him laughing like a puppy from time to time because of the spicy food.
When Chu Yifeng was washing rice, Liu Yafang came back with a lot of bags.
He immediately put down the work in his hands, went over with a big watermelon in his arms, and placed it on the small round table in the yard.
"Are they asleep? Are they not making any noise?" Liu Yafang took the towel handed to her by her brother-in-law, wiped her face roughly, and quickly asked about her two most important treasures.
He goes out and buys things as if they were free, grabbing everything. What's the point? Isn't it because he's worried that his son-in-law can't control those two little ancestors?
Chu Yifeng's eyes were full of smiles, and he looked very pleased with himself as he cut watermelon for his mother-in-law: "You play with me very well, now that you know I'm your father. Mom, just wait and see, I'll sleep a lot tonight."
"Have you given me water?"
"Hey."
"Did you cry?"
"No, I just kept laughing. Mom, please sit down and have a piece of watermelon to quench your thirst."
"Have you peed or pooped yet?"
"Look, I've washed and hung them out to dry."
Liu Yafang glanced at the railing, but still worried, she tiptoed into the house and took a few peeks.
When he came out again, he had a smile on his face, looking quite satisfied. He said with his breath: "You are really good. Those two clever kids are always so naughty. Put them there quickly, I will cook."
"No need. It's just something that comes naturally. What did you buy?"
Chu Yifeng put the rice on the stove and started to wash cucumbers, eggplants and corn. While working, he also chatted with his mother-in-law in a low voice.
Liu Yafang laid out her story one by one. No one wanted to listen to her nagging now, but when her son-in-law asked her this question, she started talking:
"That's right. Your uncle and his wife work here, and it's not easy for them to be away from home all year round. I've been taking care of his child's clothes since last winter. Now it's summer vacation, and other children have their parents by their side, but his child still has to follow his grandfather to the fields to deliver food. He's very sensible. As his aunt, I thought I'd mail his school clothes back now, and also bought him two sets of clothes to wear now."
Chu Yifeng nodded: "That's right."
Liu Yafang showed off by taking out a pair of leather sandals and showing Chu Yifeng that they were made of real leather. She didn't buy any cheap stuff. "This is for Dacheng. Your brother is getting stubborn every day. It's so hot out here, and he said that wearing sandals with pants doesn't look good. Who's looking at him? Tsk tsk."
He twisted it back and forth, indicating that the sandals had soft soles:
"Look at these shoes! They have really nice soles, much better than those stinky feet he's covered in them all day. You know what? I had a brilliant idea today. I went to the department store and saw these leather shoes, which were on sale. Guess how much they cost?"
Chu Yifeng started chopping meat and vegetables, his expression impeccable and full of interest:
"How much? Mom, if you can get this pair cheaper, give it to me. I love it."
When Liu Yafang heard this, she slapped her thigh and said, "Oh my god, why didn't you tell me earlier? I bought them all for you. Really, it's great. It's a bargain when you see them. Your pair? How about I go back this afternoon?"
"If you want to go for a stroll, go ahead and buy a pair for my dad too. You don't have to buy them specially for me."
Liu Yafang has already started to wonder if her brother-in-law can wear it: "What's your foot size?"
Chu Yifeng finished smacking the cucumber, holding the remaining cucumber root in his mouth, and said vaguely: "My feet are the same size as your shoes. It doesn't matter if these sandals are too big or too small."
"Okay. Here you go, try it now."
…
When Bi Yue returned home at noon, the two babies were awake. Old Mrs. Chu was already holding her chopsticks and sitting at the dining table waiting for them.
Bi Yue listened to Mrs. Chu's introduction this morning, and with Liu Yafang adding a few words, she raised an eyebrow and praised him softly while washing her hands, "Great job, Chu Yifeng, you're all-rounder."
"Of course. Don't you see who you're marrying?"
As soon as the dishes of stewed pork belly, eggplant, potato and corn, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, cold cucumber salad, and stir-fried celery and peanuts were served, Chu Yifeng brought out the steaming rice.
